The latest side project from Christopher Smith have already whetted appetites with two EPs in the last year so it’s about time they put together a full release. Shook will be that LP, set for release on October 2nd via Full Time Hobby. Expect graceful pop, sleepy shoegaze and precise indie. Terence Nance has been quiet on the feature front since An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, he’s been regularly churning out short films and music videos. His recent magic-realist-tinged Rotterdam entry, Swimming in Your Skin Again, has been described as “astoundingly beautiful” and “sublime” and his latest music video, for New York quartet The Dig, conveys a similar conflation of the concrete and surreal. It opens with a young family being trailed by a collective of dancers, and only takes off from there. Watch it below:
Tame Impala have announced the title of the group's third studio album, Currents, which will serve as the follow-up to the band’s award winning 2012 release, Lonerism. Along with this news the Perth outfit also shared with us, Cause I’m A Man, the second track to be made public after its premiere on Australian radio show Triple J. Cause I’m A Man will be available to buy from midnight on April 7th. There is currently no release date for Currents although it has been confirmed that currents will be released via their new label, Interscope. Listen to Cause I’m A Man below:
Four piece outfit hailing from Oakland, California, Trails and Ways, are prepping their debut album after recently signing to Barsuk Records, the same label behind acts like Death Cab For Cutie, Phantogram and Ra Ra Riot. In anticipation of their forthcoming album The Waterfall, My Morning Jacket have premiered a brand new track titled Spring (Among the Living). Presented with an appropriate slow motion visual of cascading waterfalls, Jim James sings of renewed life and the season to come as guitars swirl psychedelically and drums roll rhythmically behind him. Flamingo Jones aka Nicholas Bond hails from Melbourne and has been making waves with his fresh, vibrant and tropical debut releases, Botanic Animal and Skinny D.I.P. With a sound familiar to that of Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend it would be hard to restrain from blaring out the works of Flamingo Jones on a hot summers day. Botanic Animal is filled with twinkling guitars and textural sounds provided through animal samples and synths, which work nicely. Nicholas Bond's vocals don’t demand centre stage in the way that Panda Bear does, however this works nicely with the flow of the track. Skinny D.I.P. is layered with the most colourful samples and bright steel drum patterns. There is a samba-esque shuffle to the sound, making it as upbeat as you could imagine. Dutch producer and multi-instrumentalist Jacco Gardner has recently signed with Polyvinyl who will release his new album, Hypnophobia, which follows up his highly acclaimed 2013 release, Cabinet of Curiosities, which I’d recommend listening to if you haven’t already. If you take a little bit of the musical mastery of Ty Segall and the psychedelic flair of Tame Impala you’ll get rewarded with Gardner’s new single, Find Yourself, which is a meandering psychedelic odyssey. Hypnophobia is scheduled for relase on May 5th via Polyvinyl you can listen to, Find Yourself, the first track released from the album below:
Ahead of their release of new album, Escape From Evil, Lower Dens have shared new single, Ondine, which features production by Ariel Rechtshaid (Sky Ferreira, Vampire Weekend, Cass McCombs) one of a handful of collaborators on the album. Team Morale, a duo consisting of George Cloke and Oli Dewdney who hail from Sevenoaks, Kent, have just shared Ubuntu ahead of their much anticapated second EP, Satori, which is going to be self-released and available for purchase on April 6th Ubunto is scheduled for a physical release on on March 9th via Bad Panda Records but you can download the track for free via soundcloud. After their hiatus, reunion, and lineup change, Thee Oh Sees are back with a brand new album. The new record, titled Mutilator Defeated At Last, Is scheduled for a release on May 18th via Castle Face. It serves as the follow-up to last year’s album Drop. The lineup on this new record includes orignal members John Dwyer, Tim Hellman, and Nick Murray, as well as Brigid Dawson and Chris Woodhouse, both of whom have worked with Thee Oh Sees on numerous albums. Sweedish super group Amason consisting of Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow), Gustav Ejstes (Dungen), Petter Winnberg (Little Majorette), Amanda Bergman (Hajen, Idiot Wind), and Nils Törnqvist (Little Majorette) First caught my attention with their 2013 self titled EP Amason. Now two years down the line and after the 2014 single release, Duvan, the band have released their debut album, Sky City, via Swedish artist collective and record label Ingrid. Listen to Duvan below:
Vancouver based Dralms are a collaborative project consisting of solo artist Christopher Smith alongside Shaunn Watt and Peter Carruthers from Siskiyou and William Kendrick of Failing. Recently signing to London's independent record label Full Time Hobby, the band have offically showcased their first release from the label with a haunting yet mesmerizing track titled Crushed Pleats. Dralms is currently working on a full-length album at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver with producer/engineer John Raham. Melbourne five-piece band, Darts, have released their first offering from the up coming debut LP, Below Empty and Westward Bound. The new song is titled Westward Bound and has an agressive 90's garage rock sound which resembles the likes of early Modest Mouse and Pixies. In addition to the news of the release the band have also just signed to Sydney based record label Rice is Nice. The album is released on May 15th. Listen to Westward Bound below:
London’s Maribou State has announced their debut album, Portraits, will be release via Counter Records . This news came accompanied with the first single, Rituals, which will be released on March 24th. First catching my attention with 2013's track, Truths feat. Jimi Nxir, Maribou state have come back with, Rituals, a track that bridges the funky sounds of The 2 Bears and the atmospheric qualities of Matthew Dear. Listen to Rituals below:
Blur have announced their first album since 2003, The Magic Whip. The announcement was made via a live stream press conference from a Chinese restaurant in London hosted by Zane Lowe. Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year which fits in nicely as most of the album was written in China last year. The new album is due out on April 27th. Modest Mouse will release the follow-up to 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, with their latest album, Strangers to Ourselves, on March 17th via Glacial Pace.
