Sorry I keep reblogging stuff meant for my main account. Been trying to work on some Squadra stuff on and off and then Tumblr keeps switching to this account if I dare touch a draft... also thank you all for your patience, there are critical medical emergencies in my extended family right now and I am overwhelmed.
don't know if this is ok to ask, but is it okay to send asks/requests now?
you certainly can send them - it gladdens my heart to see that people continue to enjoy the blog, but how or when i can get to them will be uncertain because life has a way of not letting up right now, and my well of inspiration has been rather dry. still, you never know, and if i find i have ideas for an ask i get, then i'll do my best. as long as you all are fine with things taking more time, go ahead!

I’m not sure if you know, but apparently the new la squadra novel revealed the personalities of sorbet and gelato, and it’s suprisingly the opposite of their fanon personalities
What do you think?
Oooh, interesting! I just saw this, so I'm sorry if this response was slow, but thank you so much for sending me this!
I have not read the novel, and I will be honest, because of the nature of my work, I am not much of a reader for fun nowadays and probably won't read it, but!
On the one hand, it's an interesting thing to see - sort of subverting expectations based on their character designs in a way, because Gelato's outfit is way more "military" to me than anything about Sorbet. And there are some fun details here, like the sweets and such, I'll give them that. Who wrote the novel by the way? I'm guessing that one is not Araki's doing, but was he involved in any way, like coming up with the characterization?
On the other hand, I was not impressed by those character sheets. They have Stand but we can't tell you what it is! I laughed, honestly, I just guffawed, that feels like such a weird cop-out. I swear if they just left out that part about Stands, it would have been better to me personally, but with those caveats of undisclosed Stands added, I just laughed, I couldn't take any of it seriously afterwards. Plus, I feel like their being fleshed out is coming in so late and in such a roundabout way - especially after all the no homo disclosures in previous material - that I will chose to ignore this new characterization altogether and just stick to what I made up because I enjoy that better. Part of the magic with these two was that you could tell they were basically married and you were free to fill in all the blanks their sad and short narrative left behind, and fans have been allowed that range for so long that I would be surprised if anyone worth their characterization salt just threw out their previous interpretations in favor of this. Bringing over elements? Maybe, but honestly, I find this less compelling than what I personally had (and obviously, it is way less queer as well, which is something I will NOT compromise on. Canon and pseudo-canon can pry drag queen Sorbet from my cold dead hands.)
All in all, I appreciate you sending this and it's interesting to look at, but it definitely did not make me want to read the novel... welp. What about you all? Are you excited for the novel / do you like the characterizations?
(Disclaimer on not being much of a reader: I'm a translator, and I just finished a five-month workload where I basically read and reread the same text dozens of times from original language version to target language version, and it drains me so much that reading for pleasure in my free time nowadays is only doable through audio books because text will MELT in front of my eyes when my brain has had enough. Because of this I am behind on every single thing I care about that involves reading texts. It would take a hyperfixation and me absolutely starving for content on that front to beat the brain fog, and right now I don't see that in the cards for me...)

La Squadra: Fallout 2 Edition
After finishing the original Fallout, I started the sequel and it's amazing. Not for everyone perhaps, but I found it a fascinating case study of how a sequel might have you think that the original has prepared you for what's coming, and then you start the game and realize that you have more questions than answers and you walk around constantly bewildered. Anyone on the fence: give it a shot, but be prepared. (I'm struggling even on easy mode.)
Some of the characters here will have alternative versions based on my first Fallout post, since they could feasibly live on in Fallout 2 as mutants or ghouls.
RISOTTO: He was born and raised in Redding, and so witnessed first hand how the influx of Jet led to his fellow miners succumbing to addiction. He refuses to touch the stuff, and he hates New Reno with a passion for dealing poison to his hometown, so he decided to embark on a mission to sway the tide. The Chosen One will find him in the Great Wanamingo Mine, injured and resting in a corner because he fought several aliens in search of the Excavator Chip, figuring he would retrieve it to either give it to Marge LeBarge or at least prevent Dan McGrew from getting his hands on it. The Chosen One can heal him and if they tell him they came on behalf of the Kokoweef Mine, he'll join as a temporary companion to fight the Wanamingos. If they side with Dan McGrew, Risotto will turn hostile.
RISOTTO alternative (continuing from Fallout): He remained the guardian of his hometown for several decades, but being a mutant with an exceptional lifespan, he lived to see his family die of old age, and eventually drifted away because he had no ties to the newer generations. Not knowing what to do with himself, he journeyed back to the Mariposa Military Base, but found it sealed off, and after trying in vain to remove the debris and gain entry to see what happened, he settled for staying outside. When the Chosen One arrives there, the map will suggest a new area to the right side, where they will find Risotto in a makeshift tent, sitting by himself and contemplating life. If the Chosen One appeals to his desire for friends and (found) family, he can be recruited as a companion.
---
FORMAGGIO: He is a member of the New Khans, who joined after Darion had successfully reestablished the tribe. Due to his easy-going yet ruthless nature, he quickly fell in with them, made some good friends, and helped them occupy Vault 15. Because of his charisma, Formaggio was chosen to act as a "diplomat" for the New Khans; he soon gained the trust of the Squatters, and managed to send the NCR away empty-handed every time. When the Chosen One arrives, he will be friendly and speak well of both the New Khans and the Squatters. If the New Khans are wiped out, Formaggio will appear by the exit as the Chosen One tries to leave and confront them about killing the only family he had. Unless he is convinced to join the Squatters, he will block the exit until he is killed.
---
PROSCIUTTO: If the Chosen One is given the quest to help guard a secret transaction in the desert, just as they turn away to leave, a figure will be seen emerging from behind the crates and sneaking on board the Enclave Vertibird. Only when the Chosen One reaches the Enclave will they learn that it was Prosciutto, a member of Bishop's gang, who was originally sent to find out where the Salvatores get their "lightbringers" from, but in the process learned too much about the Enclave and chose to infiltrate them. If the Chosen One initiates combat at the Oil Rig, there will be one Enclave soldier who will always seem to shoot his fellow soldiers by accident, and any attacks aimed at him will miss. When combat ends, Prosciutto will initiate dialogue and can be recruited to take down the Enclave.
PROSCIUTTO alternative (continuing from Fallout): He left Necropolis when he got bored and started his journey through the wasteland, doing his best to avoid settlements since people kept trying to hunt him for sport. With his Plasma Pistol, he managed to keep safe for a while, but he was eventually captured by the Enclave, who were both repulsed and intrigued by the fact that he had absorbed so much radiation. They transported him to Navarro, where scientists decided to build a small-scale radioisotope power system underground, using Prosciutto as a living nuclear battery. If the Chosen One finds him, his dying wish is for them to "rewire" the system to cause a nuclear meltdown. This triggers a countdown, after which Navarro will be wiped off the face of the earth.
---
PESCI: He can be encountered up to three times before reaching San Francisco, once randomly on the world map and twice in different locations. By engaging him in conversation, the Chosen One will learn that Pesci is a starry-eyed Hubologist (AHS-1), and he was sent on a pilgrimage by the AHS-5 who had recruited him to find people sympathetic to the cause. Pesci will tell the Chosen One about Hubology and his various failed attempts to convert anyone, and they can tactfully argue with him that maybe being a Hubologist isn't all it's cracked up to be. Pesci will eventually appear at the Hubologist Compound in a side-room, brooding over his failures, and if the cult is destroyed, he can finally be persuaded to move on, but he will first beg to join the Chosen One if they have room for an NPC.
PESCI alternative (continuing from Fallout): He was away on a scouting mission when the Military Base was destroyed, and upon their return, his Unity patrol unit decided to search the area. That was how Pesci happened upon the ruins of his former village, and for a while he remained there despite the other patrol members leaving him, relearning how to fish and hoping against hope that someone would show up in the village again, but it was all in vain. It took him over a decade to give up on his home, and he traveled up the coast until he came across San Francisco. He now lives on the shore by the Tanker, making his living by fishing and preparing his catch in various ways he had learned from his village days to help vary the locals' diet. Despite being different, he is loved by many.
---
GHIACCIO: He was born three pounds of tribal whoop-ass and it is almost admirable how he managed to make it everybody else's problem, to the point where the high elder exiled him. He started roaming from town to town, always getting into trouble and being forced out eventually, until he reached Broken Hills. He was prepared to fight everyone there, but Marcus managed to overpower him and talk to him long enough to find out that rather than being racist, Ghiaccio was simply an overly defensive misfit, and offered to let him stay as a regular resident. He dislikes his fellow humans for being "weird", but gets along with the mutants and ghouls just fine, and if you confront Francis about the missing people and make him go away, Ghiaccio will have to be talked down or he'll turn hostile.
---
MELONE: He first appears at the Stables as a scientist minding his own business in a corner a few rooms away from Myron. When spoken to, he will reveal that he is on the verge of being thrown out because he has lost interest in researching and developing Jet and is now dreaming of having his own laboratory where he could do something different. The Chosen One can help him by 1) giving him 2000 gold to help him get his own place in New Reno; 2) finding him 2 pieces of Junk to outfit the old Auto-Doc at his new place. Melone will then offer the Chosen One gender-affirming surgery for a fee (or in exchange for a Bio Med Gel). This will change the player's avatar, and if they chose to have no traits or have only one trait, Melone will also bestow the Sex Appeal trait on the Chosen One as a bonus.
MELONE alternative (continuing from Fallout): After meeting the Vault Dweller at the Glow and having a conversation with a real person for the first time in decades, he began to yearn for society and eventually, armed with his faithful Robobrain Baby Face, he said goodbye to his home and headed north. He first came across Necropolis, where a ghoul named Lenny spoke to him of the Vault Dweller, prompting Melone to share his story and journey onward (causing Lenny to follow suit soon after). He made it as far as the infamous Ghost Farm near Modoc and settled down with the Slags. If the Chosen One tells him that Gecko could use a scientist to keep the Reactor running smoothly, Melone can be sent off to become a supervisor there, which earns the player positive karma in Gecko.
---
ILLUSO: The Chosen One will first come across him in the courtyard of Vault City, and learn that Illuso came here in the hopes of a comfortable city life and has been striving for citizenship ever since, but by now he is out of money to buy a Day Pass and continue his studies for the citizenship test. The player can either have him tag along as a temporary NPC while in Vault City or give him the False Citizenship Papers acquired from Skeev, and Illuso will take it from there. Within three calendar days, he will become a Citizen and the biggest bitch after Joanne Lynette, and if he is made a Citizen before the Chosen One, he won't even talk to them anymore. If the Chosen One gets made first, they can ask him about his history with the Raiders and enable the well as a point of entry into their hideout.
---
SORBET: He first appears as a resident of Modoc hanging out at the bar of Rose's Bed and Breakfast. If the Chosen One treats him to a meal there (he will always choose the omelet), he will offer to share all sorts of "rumors" about the major residents of the town, especially Grisham and his children. For each question asked, he will ask the Chosen One to flip a coin (Gambling check) and if it's Heads, he will answer the question and award 25 experience points for each successful coin flip. He knows what "type" of chicken Rose uses to make her special omelets and will warn the Chosen One not to meddle. If the Chosen One has been to the Den, Redding, or New Reno, they can recommend their casinos to Sorbet, and he will randomly appear in one of those locations, playing a slot machine.
SORBET alternative (continuing from Fallout): He is one of the Easter Eggs waiting to be found in the special encounter involving the Maltese Falcon. Seated at a table in the corner well away from everyone else, he is the only character that can be engaged in conversation, and if the Chosen One treats him to Beer (other types of booze will also work, but only Beer will unlock every speech option), he will have some fun trivia to share about the others in the bar. If the Chosen One asks him about Dogmeat, Sorbet will give them an Iguana-on-a-stick to feed and thus recruit it, and he will drop some hints that Iguana-on-a-stick is people. (He kept blackmailing Bob over that secret till his dying day.) If asked about Set, he will remark that some ghouls are more rotten than others.
---
GELATO: He was an NCR Ranger who was eventually recruited at the Westin Ranch to serve as a guard during brahmin drives. He made many a successful venture that way, but one night, at a time when caravans kept getting ambushed, he saw something move in the distance and decided to investigate. That was how he happened upon the intelligent Deathclaws, and after gushing to them about how he had always admired them, they took him along to Vault 13. He proved his love of the species so thoroughly that he was allowed to spend his days at the hatchery with the Deathclaw mother and her babies. If the Chosen One returns to Vault 13 after the massacre, they will find that Gelato risked his own life to save two eggs, and Goris can no longer be recruited so he can help raise the babies.
La Squadra: Fallout 1 Edition
Going with the original Fallout because that is the only one I have played so far, and it is a foundational masterpiece so if you haven't played it yet, do yourself a favor and give it a shot! If you're already a fan, I hope you'll find this a treat!
RISOTTO: He used to live peacefully in a small town until a group of raiders decided to take over and one of them killed his cousin in a drunken rage. Risotto fought them, but was beaten to a pulp and thrown out of town. He swore revenge and wandered into the wasteland to get stronger, but on his journey, he was captured by mutants. Impressed by his imposing physique, he was interrogated by the Lieutenant, who quickly discovered his weak point and promised he could have his revenge in exchange for joining the Unity. Risotto voluntarily entered the vats, and a month later, he returned to his hometown as a super mutant and slaughtered the raiders. His fellow mutants left, but Risotto is still there, watching over the town.
FORMAGGIO: He was born to the last remnants of the Vipers as they were fleeing from the extermination campaign of the Brotherhood of Steel. His family was constantly on the move and he quickly learned every trick of the trade, so by the time he snuck into Junktown at age twelve, he had become an astute pickpocket and quite charming in his own rowdy way. Killian Darkwater wanted to set him right, but Formaggio wouldn't let himself be fixed, and he was soon taken up by Gizmo, who passed him over to the Skulz. He has been chilling in the back of the Crash House ever since, messing around with the gang and pestering the residents, tipping over Brahmin, ending up in jail from time to time, and boxing for money whenever Saul is unavailable for any reason.
PROSCIUTTO: He was one of the original residents of Bakersfield who had been selected to enter Vault 12, primarily because he had certain health quirks that made him a promising case study. When radiation flooded the vault, he absorbed so much of it that he soon turned into a Glowing One. He has been living underground for a long time, and not only is he still radioactive, but his body keeps absorbing radiation from his surroundings, so he's essentially a walking nuclear meltdown waiting to happen. Set wanted to kick him out of Necropolis because of how hazardous he had become, but dared not risk an altercation and further damage to the facilities, so Prosciutto continues to live in the vault. The other ghouls bring him books to read from time to time.
PESCI: He grew up in a small fishing village founded on the coast by people who had no idea they were in close proximity of the Mariposa Military Base. Several villagers had disappeared over time as the Master began to exert his influence and lure nearby travelers into the base, and he eventually amassed enough mutants to launch a raid on the village, capturing Pesci and the rest. Most of them did not survive their dipping, but Pesci emerged from the vats with his already sharp senses greatly enhanced, which made him a useful asset. Now he is often dispatched with mutant patrols because he can detect humans from miles away. He's constantly being brainwashed by the Lieutenant because he keeps wanting to back out of fights and raids.
GHIACCIO: He was born in the Hub, and if things had worked out for him, he would have probably become a respected caravan guard, but instead he fell in with the wrong crowd and his aggressive and volatile behavior soon earned him the boot even from Decker's employ. He flipped off the Hub with both hands and went south, where he eventually came across the Boneyard and decided to look for work there. The Regulators soon found him unmanageable and had half a mind to just shoot him, but the Scavengers decided to give him a chance because of his tenacity and viciousness. He's now one of the best Scavs in Adytum, constantly putting his life on the line to salvage whatever is needed. He once killed a deathclaw with his bare hands.
MELONE: He used to be a scientist working at the West Tek Research Facility, and ended up the sole survivor of the direct nuclear strike. He was inside one of the suspension tubes deep below ground taking residue samples when he passed out from the impact and woke up a crippled ghoul, with everyone else dead. Since then he has made the Glow his home: he turned one of the security robobrains into his assistant (he calls it Babyface), and has been gradually working on improving Zax, feeding it information he gathered from the facility and programming it to become a more versatile companion (he was the one who taught Zax to play chess). If you meet him at the Glow, he will gladly show you around, riding on top of Babyface for mobility.
ILLUSO: He was born on the cusp of the final exodus from Vault 15. He was raised on stories of how it used to be sealed and completely safe, and imbibed them fully; he planned to stay for the rest of his life before the final attack that forced the remaining vault dwellers out. He eventually sought refuge in Shady Sands, where the walls and thriving agriculture gave him hope of the peaceful and sheltered life he had been dreaming of. He's the worst shut-in you can find there, constantly sucking up to Aradesh and validating his fears of the dangerous outside world, which is one of the reasons Shady Sands never started trading with Junktown. Every time the Khans come around, he hides until the fight's over. His haters call him "vault boy".
SORBET: When radiation first took its toll on him and his original settlement exiled him, he moved into Necropolis in the hopes of feeling more at home among the ghouls, but eventually left because he cared nothing for Set or for the sewer-dwellers, and did not like the idea of living in the vault. He eventually made his way to the Hub, where the people were exposed to enough variety to accept him as a local oddity alongside Harold. He mostly spends his days at the Maltese Falcon because he enjoys gambling and listening to music. He is willing to barter with newcomers, but don't expect any info until you have treated him to a beer or several. He knows what the iguana-on-a-stick is made of and has been blackmailing Bob over it for years.
GELATO: For most of his life he was a lone adventurer roaming the wasteland, just wrestling mole rats for fun or joining the odd group he came across during his travels. That was how he discovered caravans, and after tagging alongside a few, he eventually wound up in the Hub, where he tried all the traders and decided to go with the Crimson Caravan Company. He remains one of their best guards and has survived more than one mutant raid along the way, which is saying something. While he understands the dangers mutants and mutated creatures pose, he finds them all equally fascinating, and quickly made friends with Harold and Sorbet. His dream (and everyone else's nightmare) is to get a deathclaw egg and raise the hatchling as a pet.
are you still on hiatus?
Sorry for the later reply, and that itself is sadly an indication: I am on hiatus mostly due to an insane amount of intellectual work that is simply draining my inspiration - I haven't really had any fun Squadra thoughts in months, despite loving them a lot and missing them!
Hope you all are doing well, all things considered! And thank you as always for all the likes and reblogs I got - even when I'm out of ideas, this sideblog will stay and hopefully will remain a source of joy for Squadra fans! And of course whenever I am tightly gripped by inspiration, I will come back to it. <3
Okay, so I read the translation of the first part of the La Squadra magazine and...
Aw hell nah they did not just say that Sorbet and Gelato were best friends

twitter . com/JOJO_magazine/status/1858646509497315617 Araki drew the whole squad for the magazine cover!!! we're eating so good!!!! he removed prosciutto's hair buns again though haha
Removing the hair buns is a crime against me personally, but oh god I just answered the previous ask and I'm loving the picture overall! We are eating so good indeed, Formaggio is giving me fresh life.
jojo magazine cover with the guys! what do you think?
The color palette is delectable, really enjoying Formaggio and Melone together, I always thought they would make a fun duo and Formaggio is really getting his dues in this one. Pesci in the forefront? Unheard of yet much deserved. Also gelato's fit? Heck yeah!
Only things I'm sad about is Ghiaccio almost lost in the crowd and Prosciutto's lack of hair buns, everything else is great!
what do you think about this?
HOLY MOLY, that might just be a holy grail right there!
Thank you for showing it to me, I await developments...!

I am, due to work, though I do miss the squad - I just haven't had much inspiration on top of not having time. If I do get inspiration though, I'll be sure to post my thoughts!

“Fine. Here goes…” Prosciutto shakes his right hand free to brush it ever so gingerly to Formaggio’s cheek. “You’re my ray of sunshine. My right hand man. You’re my favorite off-color tennis ball,” he rubs his hand over Formaggio’s ginger scalp, brushing his thumb along the length of the cut on the right side to drive his point home.
