there's been an epidemic lately of classic stories being adapted into films that completely miss the point. Like, this has always been happening, but the concentration of films like this has just been so HIGH the past couple years. GDT Frankenstein, Emerald Fennel Wuthering Heights, Nolan's Odyssey, and now the new Carrie... I believe it's the result of the film industry cannibalising itself due to late stage capitalism. Adaptations make money, through relying on established audiences that are familiar with the story + usually public domain works being adapted. So we're just getting more and more adaptations made for profit, with the directors eager to leave their own stamp on the story even at the cost of its themes and messaging because they want to retain SOME dignity as creatives I imagine. Or whatever
