I'm Kay (He/They), I'm from South Africa and I recently became a home owner. This account is a place for me to post about my home renovation, DIY, and gardening.
I also post a few photos here and there of places and plants I've seen. Anything I post, I took or made myself, and if I'm posting an image I did not create myself, I will say so in the post or tags and give proper credit to the original creator.
If I ever reblog an AI-generated image please feel free to let me know so I can remove it.
I have two other accounts, @kay-claire (mainly my art and writing), and @indie-kay (for reblogging stuff that doesn't fit the themes of my other two blogs).

The first of the poppies is ready for seed harvesting! The pods have hundreds of seeds each. They're ready for collecting when these little slits open around the top--the seeds just pour right out. Left is not ready; right is! All of the seeds are from that one pod.
So the wall between my house and the back neighbours fell over in a storm in May and the owner of the house FINALLY came buy to say he got the money to fix it from his insurance and they're going to start working on building the wall soon. So yay!
I was putting off starting on my raised garden until I got an update on the wall situation, and then I gave up and wanted to start on the raised gardens anyway, but I guess now I'll continue to wait until they finish building the wall. So fingers crossed it gets done quickish.
Every time I'm forced by circumstance to hand-sew something, I remember a fairytale I once read. There are lead-up shenanigans as the humble protagonist helps small animals and meets the princess and all that, but in the climax, the princess rigs a contest for her hand by setting her own task: sew her a dress in a single night.
The noble suitors, who have never sewn a thing in their lives, sabotage themselves by their own ambitions: they choose difficult fabrics to work with and cut huge, elaborate patterns and select gems and pearls and beads to sew onto it, and snip such long bits of thread that they lose time detangling their stitches, and ultimately resort to pinning bits together as they run out of time, so that their offerings initially look beautiful and flashy, but when the princess tries them on they stick her with pin ends and fall apart as she moves.
The humble protagonist uses a very simple pattern without embellishments and sews using short lengths of thread (snipped off and threaded for him by little birds of course) which don't tangle and therefore save time. His dress is plain by contrast, but holds together and the princess is able to move freely in it, and so he wins the contest and her hand.
I particularly think about the bit about threading the needle with shorter lengths of thread, needing to tie off more often but avoiding tangles and thereby saving time.
I then ignore that piece of wisdom passed down through who knows how many years and proceed to cut the longest damn length of thread I can manage because I hate tying off beginning or ending knots and I will not subject myself to more of that even if it does mean more tangles along the way.

Since moving, I've been putting off buying baking supplies since they're going to be a big upfront cost. A few weeks ago, I did buy a small thing of flour and baking powder so I could make orange loaf cake, and I have made that 3 times since, so I've used up a big chunk of that flour. And I also used some flour to make some hand-pulled noodle soup.
Anyway, I told my mom that yesterday that I wanted to bake and she always knows what sales are happening at what grocery stores, so she was like "Oh PicnPay is doing a weekend sale on baking stuff". So I went to PicnPay and I was able to get a bigger bag of flour and baking powder as a paired sale, plus a brownie mix, and then also just bought vegetable oil, golden syrup and baking soda at regular price.
I want to make crunchies (that's what they're called here, they're called crumpets in the UK and I don't know what the US calls them. Oat bars maybe?), but I still need some almond flakes and shredded coconut for that. My mom said she'd give me some of the supply she has, and she'll throw in some cocoa powder too.
In the mean time, I might make half of the brownie mix at some point. I was thinking of blitzing some black beans to add to it while I'm add it, because I've always been curious about black bean brownies.
I made some wontons today! I usually make gyoza but there's no Asian supermarkets in this area, so I was super lucky to find the wonton wrappers in town. Also buying ready made gyoza is so expensive, it's usually like R80 for a 12 pack.
I made enough filling for 50 wontons, but I only defrosted half of the wrappers and filled them, and then I cooked 8 for dinner and froze the rest I made (13) along with the rest of the filling I made, so I can finish making the rest at a later date.
I served them with edamame fried in butter with garlic and togarashi/chilli flakes. I'd love to figure out how to grew soy beans in my garden so I can have a good supply of edamame.
Anyway under the cut is the recipe (they're vegetarian/vegan and work for gyoza or wontons)
Vegan Gyōza/Wontons
Makes 50-60 (full bag of wrappers)
I use pre-made wrappers, but there are instructions online to make your own.
Ingredients:
For filling:
1 diced onion
1 grated carrot
250 grams mushrooms, finely chopped
1 leek, finely chopped
½ - 1 baby cabbage, shredded
1-2 tablespoons sesame oil (olive oil works too)
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon ginger, minced
2 ½ tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon tōgarashi spice (or chilli flakes)
1 teaspoon salt
For garnish:
Spring onion, cut
Sesame seeds
Dipping sauce (I just use soy sauce)
Instructions
To cook filling:
Finely chop the veggies and heat the oil in a large pan
Add the mushrooms, onions, and carrots and fry for 2-3 minutes until lightly browned
Then add the leek and cabbage with a little salt and cook for further 5-7 minutes, or until veggies are soft and cooked through, stirring occasionally. Add a little water if needed
Add the garlic, ginger, chilli flakes and soy sauce and cook for a further minute to combine the flavours
Set aside to cool
To fill and fold
Add 1 heaped teaspoon of filling to the centre of the dumpling wrapper. Brush the edges with water and fold the dumpling closed (there are multiple ways to do this, and lots of tutorials on YouTube)
You can freeze the dumplings or cook fresh
For cooking
Heat oil in a pan on a medium heat until it heats up
Place dumpling in pan and cook until bottoms start to brown
Pour 1/2 cup of water into the pan and cover pan with lid
Steam for 7-10 minutes or until water has fully evaporated
Plate up and garnish with spring onion and sesame seeds
These can also be cooked in a soup, steamed, air fried, or deep fried.
Yay I finally finished making this bed bigger! Here's a before and after. Taking out all the grass was definitely the hardest part.
It's a hibiscus plant in the middle with gazanias planted around it. I transplanted a few more gazania from other areas in the garden here. And I left the back bit empty for now, but in the front part I threw down a packet of native wildflower seeds. I really hope I didn't leave this too late in the season - they probably should have been planted in May.
So fingers crossed they grow, and also fingers crossed they don't all end up being gazanias too.

This video has gotten almost 100K views on TikTok, which means I'm getting some unhinged suggestions of what I should and should not be doing to the room. (Most of the comments are very nice, and mainly saying they think it's so lovely that my dad helped me so much, though. Like for the most part people have been lovely).
One comment I got a few times was that I should have also painted the ceiling, but left the wooden beams as is. And there's many reasons I didn't do this. 1) the ceiling is styrofoam and is a bitch to paint. 2) It's slightly loose so when you press on it, it moves up a bit, which would make it a bitch to paint, especially around the edges to get under the wood without accidentally getting paint all over the wood. 3) The cornices have something on them that makes the paint separate when you put paint on them, which would be a bitch to paint. 4) I only have a ladder that leans against walls, so I would have had to bought/hired another ladder/scaffolding to do the middle of the room, which is a LOT of extra cost. 5) I only had enough paint to paint the walls, so I'd have had to buy more paint for the ceiling. 6) I think painting the whole room green and just leaving the wood visible in the ceiling would look bad, actually. Like maybe a lighter tone of green between the wood would look nice but I don't think the dark green would look nice on the ceiling. 7) If I decided to repaint this room another colour one day, it's easier to paint the walls than it is to repaint a ceiling, especially when there's furniture in the room.
Someone said the green was too dark and I should have left one of the walls white. 1) The green is not too dark, I know because I use the room every day. There are 2 windows in the room, and a light-coloured floor, and a light-coloured ceiling, and a light-coloured bookshelf, so the room actually has plenty of light in it and light-coloured things for the light to bounce off of. 2) Leaving just 1 white wall would just make it look like I forgot to paint that wall. Like that's not an accent wall, it's just a white wall.
Then someone else said I should get rid of the ceiling fan and replace it with aircon. 1) Why would I get rid of something that came free with the house and works perfectly well and also doesn't look bad? The fan being in this room was one of the reasons I chose this room as my office. 2) Aircon is FUCK expensive to install (just the machine is R5K at the cheapest, then you need installation. Or you get the free-standing ones, but they take up SO much space), AND then on top of that fee they're also very energy draining and it'd add a huge expense to my monthly electricity bill. 3) Aircons are ugly and my fan isn't ugly. 4) Aircon is worse for the environment. 5) It doesn't even get hot enough here to warrant aircon. South African houses are built to keep the inside cool, if I have the windows open and the fan on the room should be cool enough, and this area only gets to 30 degrees Celsius a few times a year, usually in February, so it's really not that bad that I would NEED aircon.
And then the most recent comment I got said I should take one of the windows out and replace it with a door to outside. Which like 1) So I've already done renovations and have fit my windows with fly screens, and have painted the room, and NOW I should hire people to come destroy that work to put a door in?? Terrible planning. What a waste of money and time. 2) One of the windows is above the desk, so saying I should replace one of the windows is like, cool so I must also get rid of the desk then? 3) The house already has a front door, a door into the garage, and a backdoor from the kitchen. That's 3 ways to get in and out of the house, and 3 places I need to keep secure and remember to lock every day. Why on Earth would I need a 4th one? Especially into the room that houses my most expensive equipment. 4) I have a fly screen on the window, a fly screen for a door is WAY more expensive, I would never have the door open because it'd just let all the bugs into my office.
And like, listen. I know all the fun of renovation videos for some people is the fantasy of it being your house and thinking of how you would change the room for your personal tastes and lifestyle. I totally get that and I'm not replying to these people's comments telling them why I didn't do what they're suggesting. But also as the person who has to pay for these things and live with them, I think I'm allowed to get annoyed at some of these suggestions because they're unrealistic or just bad, and that's why I'm writing out my whys here instead of posting them on TikTok lol.
I had high hopes of getting gardening done today, but it was just a little too cold, and I was already tired when I started at like 1pm, so I only had energy for an hour and a bit of work before I had to stop.
Anyway I was working on the flower bed I've been making bigger:
I'm sooo sad i didn't finish it because I got so close! I just need to get rid of that last little bit of grass, move the rocks from somewhere else in the garden here, and then transplant gazanias from other spots in the garden over to this spot. And then also throw down some seeds for native flowers and hope they have enough time to flower by spring.
...And, okay, that will probably take a while. But hopefully I'll have energy and good weather to do that tomorrow.
hikes are very good yes but a deluxe hike is when you are accompanied by a freak with niche nature knowledge. they’re like omg stop there’s a horned valerian varmint beetle here and then you both get to crouch down and look at a bug like :)
YES. I went hiking with a birder a few days ago and that was already really cool, but one of the other people coming along with us was an entomologist who brought his net and also his little Insect Holding Cell cups, and the onslaught of information about birds and insects and arachnids (and plants!) stopped for NO ONE.

A thought I had when I was working in the back corner of the garden last week is like, I just moved here. I have no idea if the old owners ever buried any pets in this garden. But if they DID, this back corner is probably the most likely place they'd do that.
