you had forced him out of the training area, practically begging him to stop overworking himself and just take a break. when you finally urged him to let both him and lovely assistaff to rest, you dragged him to his room and plopped down on the bed with him (after setting lovely assistaff comfortably on the wall, of course).
zanka had fallen asleep almost immediately the moment you took him in your arms. he buried his face in the crook of your neck and wrapped an arm around you.
a couple of minutes in, he’s already snoring softly—proof he’s let himself let loose after all the days he spent killing his body by training excessively.
and while your arm starts to tingle with numbness, you forget about it because of how peaceful zanka looks asleep in your arms.
“you act nonchalant, sometimes harsh, and you’ve got a sharp tongue,” you said to yourself more than to zanka as you continuously ran your fingers through his hair, “yet… beneath that strong facade you put on is a soft heart.”
zanka softly groaned at the sensation of your fingernails against his scalp, but you didn’t seem to realize his waking and went on with your rambling.
“you’re so cute when you fake anger,” you giggled to yourself. “the way your brows furrow, and how your lips pucker… i wanna kiss you so bad, you know that?”
oh. zanka for sure feels like his face is starting to heat up—whether from embarrassment or fluster, he isn’t sure.
“after everything you went through, you’re still so thoughtful to others, and i hope you’d be kind to yourself as well. you’re so strong, zanka. so strong, i admire you for that.”
tears started forming and threatened to fall from zanka's eyes, and his heart flipped a little at your words. how can you say such tender words towards him? he who is always so aggressive on the battlefield, he who only knows to seek victory and the best version of himself no matter the consequences.
“you’re so hardworking it hurts.” you leaned closer to zanka, your cheek lying on top of his head. “i hope you take care of yourself… i’m scared one day i’ll be gone, and you won’t eat properly and on time. i don’t want that. i’ll haunt you forever.”
zanka has no idea how long you've been talking to the asleep him, but he's starting to hear your voice strain—perhaps from the dryness of your throat or maybe… maybe you're about to cry?
ah, he won't let that happen.
with his eyes still closed, he moved his hand to feel and interlace it with yours. he lifted your hand up to his lips and kissed it softly.
“hey, i'll take care of myself, hm?” he says, his voice a little deeper than usual.
“you…” you narrowed your eyes on him. “how long have you been awake?!”
zanka's brain fully awoken after your sudden outburst, your face was a red mess, and you were looking at him so suspiciously.
“uh, some time when you were tellin’ me i'm nonchalant,” he answered slowly, scared of the punishment that would come after.
you slammed a palm to your forehead, cursing yourself for talking out loud.
“what? are you embarrassed i heard ‘em?”
you looked at him with an exasperated expression. “what do you think?!”
zanka chuckled. “you sounded like you were about to cry.”
“i hate you.”
“that's not what you said earlier.”
“zanka!”
he only shrugged at your accusatory tone.
“whatever,” you continued. “don't expect to hear anything good from me anymore.”
“i— you—”
“i'm just kidding.” you grinned sheepishly at him and pinched his cheeks until they became red from the pressure.
you knew he lived on praises and acknowledgement, and he definitely likes it more when it comes from you. you were just a little embarrassed because you were saying things you couldn't bring yourself to actually tell to his face, but you're glad it's done now.
“see now that your brows are furrowed and you're pouting?” you teased him with a smile. “so cute.”
“you're cuter,” zanka mumbled.
“what?”
“i said… nevermind!”

i had fun writing this :DD here is your request! altho if u want a gentler version of zanka taking care of u (bc i had fun with blunt zanka heh), or something just fun and comfy, i’ve written two before hehehe: drabbles. one-shot.
“what did i say?” zanka clicked his tongue. “don’t push yerself too hard.”
“speak for yourself,” you grumble in bed, an arm covering your eyes from the light on the ceiling, pulling the blanket closer to you. “why does the human body have to be so weak?”
“limits exist for a reason.”
“and you’re an exception to that rule?”
zanka sighed. you’ve gone over this conversation at least once a week, and it’s pissing him off. you certainly didn’t mean for it to be some sort of rivalry, but as your obsession to grow stronger gets worse, that’s what it’s turning into.
he stood up from his seat and started working on the hot soup, pouring it into a small bowl.
“y’know that’s not true,” he started. “i listen when my body says no. and also aibo.”
“fine. i get it,” you coughed on your sleeve, cringing at the itchiness in your throat.
zanka took your arm off your face and helped you sit up. he handed you the soup and urged you to drink.
“and i don’t lie to my team when i’m burning with fever,” he said as he sat back down and watched you stare at the soup. “that’s stupid. you don’t only risk yer life but also those who wants to protect ya.”
this made you frown. you knew that yourself, and still the pride to prove what you can do won over your rational self.
“i know… i’m sorry.”
a sigh escaped zanka once more. he had his arms crossed against his chest now.
“would it kill you to rest a little?”
you only groaned in response and held the bowl to your lips. in frustration, you took a big sip without blowing the steaming soup first.
it burned.
“ow!” you hissed, a finger reflexively touching your burnt lip, and you felt the burn further in your tongue and throat.
zanka immediately took the bowl out of your hands and handed you water. he also got a towel to clean up whatever spilled and, of course, to wipe your messy face.
as soon as you finished drinking, zanka took hold of your chin. he held it up so he could see your face better, and the physical and eye contact made you burn even hotter than you were already feeling, and hotter than the soup that had burnt your mouth.
he wiped the side of your lip gently, silently, observantly. he didn’t speak a word, but this comforting, gentle silence was enough to heal at least 20% of your fever, but somehow made the beating of your heart 80% faster.
“messy,” he mumbled before setting the towel back down on the table.
“…you’re always cleaning up after my mess. sorry,” you apologized earnestly, head hung low.
zanka shook his head. “not to worry. that’s what teammates do.”
you huffed in defeat. teammates, huh?
zanka couldn’t help but notice how you kept touching the part of your lip that felt to have burned the most. he felt a desire to cool it off himself just so you’d stop being bothered about it.
he pursed his lips, and his silence made you look at him, seeking answers from his stillness.
a few seconds later, he finally asked, “does it still hurt?”
“huh?”
“that.” he jerked his chin to your lip.
you scratched your lip and nodded. “a little. why—“
zanka pulled your hand away from your lips by taking your forearm. he leaned closely, one hand on your right cheek.
your breath hitched at the proximity, and you felt hotter and hotter and hotter by every second. you could feel his warm breath as you lost yourself in his deep blue eyes.
he stared at you, as if looking for a reason, an answer to the question of whether he should back out. he swiped his thumb over your lip for a quick moment.
zanka blinked, and for a moment you wished he wasn’t going to do what you thought he was going to because you weren’t sure how your breath smelled after such a long time in bed. you couldn’t even speak in fear of that.
but hell has come down, and zanka closed the gap between you two, and you could only close your eyes as his lips made contact with yours for a brief moment.
his lips were soft, cool against yours. it was a foreign feeling, your very first kiss, and he decided to steal it when you were burning sick. surely, there must be better times to share a kiss!
zanka pulled away, a blush creeping across his cheeks and tops of his ears.
“sorry,” he said modestly, his voice small despite his huge actions. “just wanted to— to help ya cool off.”
cool off?! that was the POLAR opposite of getting COOL. you felt warm from your head down to your chest and down to the deepest depths of your being. this shit was burning even hotter than the burn in your lip, and yet the burn felt good.
a clang of metal brought the two of you back to the real world—both your heads jerked towards the direction of the noise.
“eek!” eishia, the source of the clank, panicked. she was scrambling down on the floor, head low, cleaning up what she had dropped. “s-s-s…sorry..! i’ll come by again later…!”
she sprinted out of the room.
“fuck.”
“shit.”
at this point, the state of things might just send you into a coma. a burning soup is not healing you. and one more kiss from your crush—rival—someone you admire—whatever might just drop you straight to hell. but of course, you cannot deny that it felt good.

the rain poured endlessly, its pitter-pattering along with the steps of people among the puddles pounded onto enjin’s ears despite his attempts to shut the sounds out.
he stood on an all-too-familiar street in canvas town, leaning against the wall at the back of a cafe he once frequented with a special someone before. putting down his weathered umbrella to his side, he lit a cigarette impatiently, but to no avail. the wind blew aggressively, extinguishing the flame of his lighter.
“a lollipop, perhaps?” a familiar voice offered—shutting out the sounds that surrounded him a few seconds before—handing a lollipop to him, the flavor stated in the blue packaging holding memories more than what he wanted to recall.
enjin looked beside him and saw the same beautiful eyes, same comforting smile, same quirky tilting of the head he had all fallen for before.

he remembers it all—the little details, the big deals, the shortest exchange of words, the longest nights with you. everything.
“ah, sorry,” you retracted your hand back. “it’s just… i don’t even like lollipops, but i always find myself buying them, always in this flavor. i’ve filled a whole container with these!”
enjin’s heart breaks as he hears your melancholy laughter. he had missed it so much, your bright laughter that would make him grin because it always made him feel like the luckiest man on the ground despite all the shitty things it had thrown at him. but now, it was filled with gloom, and he was the cause of it.
“i’m oversharing, am i not?” you said with a sigh, hugging yourself against the blowing wind. your heart is heavy, and you don’t even know the reason for it.
“i’ll take it,” enjin suddenly replied, offering his open palm to you.
“huh?”
“the lollipop,” he said with a smile—one that didn’t match the sadness clouding his eyes.
now that you’ve taken a good look at him, you feel a surge of emotions within you. tears started to sting your eyes, and your breath caught along with the tightening of your chest.
you have no idea why, but you felt a strange sense of belonging to the man in front of you. he felt quite too comfortable to be with; he looked too familiar to be a stranger to you.
and yet, you swore you had never seen the man.
you gulped down your saliva, blinking your drying eyes from staring too long, and apologized. “sorry, do i know you?”
enjin pursed his lips, his fingers curling to a close, his hand falling back to his side.
“no,” enjin shook his head. “no,” he repeated as if it would alter the truth. although, it is the reality now.
in front of you stood a man whom you had never met before, and yet there’s a sense of home that radiates from his aura.
“i think i’ve stayed too long here,” enjin said, looking away from you and taking his umbrella in his hands.
fuck, even the umbrella looked familiar. it’s like you had always known the way its handle was covered in bandages, the canopy torn and dirty, its sharp ferrule making a sound whenever he stomps it onto the ground.
you were too into your thoughts that you didn’t realize he was already leaving, diving straight into the harsh falling of the rain.
dang it, you need to know why you feel like this. you need to know because it might kill you if you never figure out why you always bought those lollipops, always kept one in your bag or pocket, but never ate them, never offered them to anyone else—and yet it was to this stranger whom you felt most appropriate to ask if he wanted the damn lollipop. a stranger you never met before, but felt like you spent a lifetime with.
you ran after him, stopping after a few steps, showering under the rain as the blond with the umbrella moved farther and farther away from your reach.
“wait! what’s your name?”
enjin stopped by his tracks, the question catching him off guard.
what is his name?
he blinked away the tears that were daring to fall and turned to look back at you with frail courage.
there, you stood drenched and with worried eyes, furrowed brows, and a heaving chest.
the sight of you like this tears enjin apart.
he had brought this fate upon the two of you, and it’s irreversible. he can’t do anything about it anymore. this is the new reality, the one that will go down in history.
enjin smiled once again, his voice loud enough for you to hear despite the rain and the distance between you. “...don’t have one.”
your shoulders slump in dismay, and watched the unnamed stranger walk away from you. your heart strangely shatters into pieces as your tears fall along with the rain.
he had left you alone in the rain. he left you alone again.
it’s for the best, he convinces himself.
how he wishes he could turn back time again just to have you back.
but it’s never that easy, never too simple.
it felt unfair. why can’t he just forget about you too? ever since he lost his name, everything went dumpshit again.
and he didn’t just lose his name, he lost you too, and everyone else. it was his price to pay.
