tw: death of a parent, medical trauma, cancer
Sometimes I think of how fucking wild life can be, in regards to luck. If you asked me three months ago, I would have said that my family is in its worst run of luck of all time. Two weeks after my birthday, my dad died in front of me, was revived, spent three weeks in ICU delirium while my mother refused to leave his hospital bedside...leading to my mother having a stroke the second she was able to take a breath. Her stroke had unexplained dizziness afterwards, so they did a gazillion scans of her brain, ears, neck and spine.
One scan of her neck just happened to include the top of her lung and they spotted a growth that hadn't been there in a scan from two months ago. Cue a PET scan, consult with a thoracic surgeon and confirmation - a vascularized growth that is most likely cancer and it's growing quickly.
She had it removed yesterday. They had to take a whole lobe of her lung because it had grown even more in the month or so since her last scan. She doesn't need radiation but she still might need chemo.
And I just cannot believe our good luck. They caught this thing in stage one. On accident. And she still lost almost half her lung. Her only lung related symptom before this? A cough, that started a month ago. We would have spent months dragging our feet before consulting someone. We probably would have been too late.
Jesus Fucking Christ.
