chapter 22 of take counsel in my soul is now posted!
quick excerpt:
Dennis has a different way about him when he feels safe. It’s subtle, almost undetectable when you don’t know what to look for, but impossible to miss once you’ve seen it. A loosening in his shoulders. His legs stretched out across the cushions rather than tucked up beneath him. A crease in his brow that’s there due to focusing on the words on the page rather than stress.
The way he feels secure enough to keep his back to the door at all.
The light from the side lamp is cast over his face, shadowing the slope of his nose, the set of his brows, the way he worries his bottom lip between his teeth as he reads. His t-shirt is loose in the collar, showing just the tops of the scars looping up over his shoulders. The scar tissue shines silver in the low light.
He’s so, so fucking beautiful.
God, Robby doesn’t know how he ever got this fucking lucky.
Things like this —people like Dennis— don’t happen to people like Robby. The fact that Dennis is not only in his house, but also settling here, choosing to find refuge in a broken world within the home that Robby’s made feels like a goddamn miracle.
The fact that he’s about to go on a date with him feels like another.
NICU continuation! hucklerobby!
original post -here-

“sounds like it.”
dennis’s head turned at the voice, and the change that came over his face was enough that robby’s softened smile threatened to deepen. for half a second, dennis only stared at him, visibly caught between surprise and the realization that robby had apparently been standing there long enough to hear most of the update he’d been giving to someone he had assumed was a nurse. his eyes flicked toward the folded scrub top beside him and then briefly down at himself, as though only now remembering that he was sitting shirtless in a NICU recliner with an infant tucked against his chest, before settling back on robby.
“i-i thought you were a nurse.”
“no.” robby kept his voice low, instinctively matching the quiet of the room.
a faint flush had already started climbing across dennis’s face, made considerably more obvious by the amount of bare skin currently visible above the blanket. he shifted before catching himself, the movement stopping the instant the tiny body against him stirred. his hand spread more securely over the baby’s back instead, broad palm covering nearly all of it without any pressure, and his attention dropped immediately beneath his chin. the embarrassment disappeared from his expression so quickly that robby nearly missed it. dennis waited until the infant settled again before looking toward him.
“what are you doing up here?”

chapter 21 of take counsel in my soul is posted now!
quick excerpt:
Kissing Dennis now isn’t how Robby remembers.
The first time was urgent— simultaneously tremulous and determined. It was the result of meeting the boundary and deciding to test it. Hypothesis proven, experiment turned heated, guttural in a desperate kind of way.
It was also fast. Moving quickly from hesitant to reckless and even quicker to explosion, crashing apart nearly before it began.
This is different.
This is softer. Slower. A little more cautious even as the certainty stays steady. They’re both still trembling.
The fire of before has turned lighter, gentler this time. Wildfire shifting to candlelight. Warm and steady and still burning hot as ever.
Robby’s pulse is still pounding all the same.
The contact between them is damp with tears and tasting of salt, skin warm, movements gentle. Dennis’s jaw shifts beneath Robby’s hand as his lips part. Giving permission, providing access.
It feels like a gift.
It feels like a second chance.

thank you so much for being here!! <3
college rabbot (trans Robby and first time sex)
The door clicked shut with a soft thud, sealing off the worst of the noise. Still, the bass from the downstairs speakers thrummed through the floorboards, vibrating right up into the soles of Robby’s beat up converse.
Jack had shoved past the crowd, grabbed Robby by the elbow, and essentially dragged him up the stairs without a single word of explanation. Robby had only followed because Jack looked genuinely pissed, but regret was setting in fast. They were standing in one of the upstairs bedrooms, and a random frat house bedroom was the absolute last place Robby wanted to be under any circumstances. The room smelled faintly of stale beer and cheap air fresher, and the floor was so littered with trash it looked like a raccoon had set up residence.
“What’s going on with you, man?”
Robby forced his eyes away from a suspicious pile of dirty laundry in the corner and looked at Jack. His roommate was flushed, sweaty, a few stray auburn curls sticking to his forehead.
“What? You dragged me in here.” Robby tugged at his t-shirt. The cotton had glued itself to his back and ribs from the heat downstairs. Honestly, he was a little grateful for the quiet break, even if the atmosphere in the room felt suddenly suffused with tension.
“Because something is going on with you.” Jack sounded genuinely upset, his forehead creased. Robby had never been more confused in his life. “What happened downstairs with Maddy?”
Oh.
“Nothing happened.”
“Exactly. You’ve been making puppy eyes at the girl for weeks, she finally gives you a shot, and you completely bolt. What was that about?”
When I was a little boy, girls used to just do random cartwheels for no reason. Then one day, they stopped. Now that I am a man, no women randomly do cartwheels. This is because society is evil and killed the cartwheel impulse in their soul. They don't even spin horizontally anymore. It's fucked up.
Part 2 of amputee Dennis AU
Part 1 here
Robby never made any particular effort to hide the fact that he was reading Jack's messages over his shoulder. He called it a perk of their twenty-year friendship and wasn't about to stop anytime soon.
Especially not when it came to his messages with Dennis.
6.55am Stopping for breakfast on my way back, what do you want?
6.56am Fuck you.
"Should I ask how he's doing now, or should I wait a couple of days?"

Hello! Welcome to my non-exhaustive first part of Mobility-Aids Jack Abbot Probably Has
Let’s start with my area of expertise: wheelchairs
Jack is an ambulatory wheelchair user — which means he can walk, he just spends a good chunk of his life in a wheelchair. He very likely spends most of his days in a custom active manual wheelchair. This is a wheelchair he pushes by himself without any kind of power-assist. Although, a power assist can be attached to these chairs and I guarantee Jack probably owns one. (More info below). Pictured below is an custom (rigid) active manual wheelchair that Jack would own and would be fitted to his body:
Please note that the backrest is short as Jack does not have a spinal injury as far as we are aware. There are no push handles, as many chair users (myself included) who can push ourselves and rarely need assistance, do not want to be pushed without consent. Which happens, a lot.
Jack is a BKA, a below-the-knee amputee, he would be fine using a contoured seat cushion and one foot plate. This way he can wear his leg in his chair or not.
This rigid chair is designed to be pulled apart and light. Here is a helpful guide for the names of everything. The frame itself (on a rigid chair, like the ones pictured) is one solid piece, however, the big driving wheels, seat cushion, and side guards all come off. The backrest (if solid and not fabric) will fold down.
There is also another type of custom active manual wheelchair called a folding chair. You can typically tell the different because folding chairs have split foot rests. They are also often heavier, but they can fold, some recline and some have foot rests can be adjusted to facilitate this. I don’t believe Jack would spend most of his days in a folding chair, as they are a bit bigger and less easily maneuvered. However, I do believe he owns one and likely uses one when undergoing revision surgeries to his residual limb.
Probably with a swing away support like this:
Now, pushing a wheelchair is a very tiring experience, even for someone well-accustomed to life in a chair. So, power options.
Jack likely owns a SmartDrive, Firefly or another kind of power assist that hooks onto his active manual chairs. (If you want me to explain more, I shall). Side note, there are also attachments with no power assist that Jack would probably have too, like a FreeWheel (essentially one big wheel in front that makes hiking/nature way easier).
A SmartDrive would simply hook onto the back of his chair and be controlled by a dial or a switch or an app or by push-rim.
A Firefly would hook to the front to turn his chair into more of a scooter for city travel, by lifting his caster wheels off the ground.
Now, if Jack wanted a power chair, it would likely be an electric folding chair and not a full-sized power chair.
Something like this, which would not need a ramp to get into his truck.
But! At home or for short distances with no leg — let’s move to another mobility aid: crutches!
Jack very likely uses forearm or gutter crutches to get around. Depending on how he wants his weight to sit (through his hands and wrists, or spread out through his forearms).
Forearm:
Gutter:
I also guarantee Jack has a couple random canes lying around, a couple clunker hospital wheelchairs and the parts to fix just about anything.
Jack very likely also carries with him at all times: two Allen wrench sets, microfiber towels, Clorox wipes, screws, washers and bike lube. Just in case he needs to maintenance his chair on the go. He also probably carries them in a fanny pack strapped around his seat, which makes a handy pocket under his wheelchair to carry random shit.
Jack also is a cripplepunk, I just know it in my heart and soul — but that is a different ramble. Please be expecting another post about Jack’s many legs and chair decor soon.
Now, one last thing, sports!
Our favorite cripple probably owns a sports chair, which is much lighter than even his usual rigid chair and doesn’t have brakes, but does have a bar in front (as well as an extreme camber/tilt to the wheels). Although, some don’t, depending on what sport you want to play.
This is a sled hockey bucket!
And this is for WCMX, basically skateboarding but make it wheelchair.
Anyway, this has been crippletalk with MB.
Ask me anything you want, idc.
*raises hand* I can talk about Smart Drive!
So like OP says, it can be controlled with an app, which is the way I use it. This is what the app looks like.
I had two buttons installed on my wheelchair. One on the right side of the frame and on one of the handles for my mom to push. I was given two options of button styles and one was the Buddy Button that comes in different colorways.
Not that Jack would have Robby or someone push him necessarily, but just so y'all know it's an option.
chapter 20 of take counsel in my soul is now posted!
quick excerpt:
-
The feel of Dennis back in Robby’s arms is familiar enough to ache.
The heat of him, the weight of him, the brush of his curls against the underside of Robby’s jaw— it’s all painfully present again after weeks without, simultaneously a shock and an utter relief. The act of holding him is muscle memory. Robby’s hands fall into place automatically, knowing exactly how they fit together, all his scattered pieces slotting back where they belong. Learned nature turned tangible.
The kid crashes into him hard enough that Robby has to shift his weight to brace against the impact, like somehow, even after everything, he still trusts Robby to catch him when he falls.
Oh, sweetheart.

The first orgasm of a stress heat is usually the hardest.
It marks the beginning of the transition between crisis and recovery, the painful drag between primal phases of existence. It’s a matter of overriding an omega’s instincts, breaking them out of the fight or flight that the circumstances have forced them into, turning the course of biology in the way that a stress heat exists to induce in the first place.
It’s grueling. It’s necessary. It’s unavoidable.
As a doctor, Robby’s long known this. He’s been through this before. He knows the protocols like the back of his hand.
As an alpha, he still has never gotten used to how goddamn distressing it always is.
“I know, sweetheart, I know it hurts. Hold on just a little longer, we’ve got you. Breathe.”
Robby has Dennis held in his lap, back to chest. His knees are hooked over Robby’s thighs, bare legs trembling and held open as Robby’s own legs stay spread, knees bent and feet planted on the mattress. Keeping Dennis exposed while he’s too limp to do it himself, ensuring access, maintaining the position as Jack stands at the end of the bed.
Dennis’s face is pressed to the side of Robby’s throat, directly over his scent gland, panting through clenched teeth. He’s already past the point of biting back whimpers. The sounds spill from him unmoderated now, desperate and pained and enough to make Robby’s heart feel like someone got a fucking fist around it the second Dennis hit the floor and has refused to release since.
They’re barely an hour in.
They still have so fucking long to go.

-
By the time they have Whitaker in a bed, by the time Dana reaches them, the heat’s hit him in full.
Whitaker is feverish and flushed in a patient gown, laying stiff on the plastic mattress and overwashed sheets of one of the ED’s few heat rooms. He’s still lucid, but barely— his eyes are distant, glazed, scent glands irritated and inflamed behind the blocking patches that are doing fuck all to stop the way distress pain help scared is pumping into the air, sickly sweet and laced with panic.
Robby stands at the far wall, arms crossed over his chest. Keeping himself at a respectful, ethical distance while still staying close enough to supervise.
He tries his best not to read into the way Whitaker’s glassy eyes keep flickering over to him, like he’s checking he’s still there, that he still hasn’t left. Tries not to think about the relief in Whitaker’s expression every time he finds Robby still present.
Omega and beta practitioners are prioritized during treatment for a stress heat. It’s a matter of ethics, but also a matter of comfort— omegas in distress are best soothed by those who can understand what they’re going through, those who don’t pose a biological threat to them by the nature of their existence. It’s natural. It’s protocol.
Robby’s here as an attending ensuring the well being of his resident, but he shouldn’t be here as an alpha. He won’t be here for much longer after Dana’s able to confirm the best course of treatment.
And if Robby’s scent blockers are doing overtime to choke back the concern and protectiveness currently flooding his chest, then, well. That’s no one’s business but his own.
had a free afternoon and decided to dive head first into the deep end of omegaverse and pitt porn. I present to you, dennis getting clobbered by a stress heat mid-trauma and robby + jack helping him through it. part one of a few, eventual hucklerabbot!
-
The patient was gone before she even reached them. No pulse, no respirations, too much time passed. It’s something that they had all registered the instant they saw her— a body that small can’t come back from that much blood loss.
They all still try.
God, Whitaker still tries.
That restless, focused energy of a trauma hovering on the brink of failure stays alive in him the longest, breathless but still not hopeless even as the rest of the trauma team begins to fade. Still urging that little heart to beat despite the fact that Robby knows that it’s beyond repair.
The kid’s already had a bad shift. Too many traumas, too many deaths that he could do nothing to prevent, three dead omegas from a multi-vehicle accident before they even hit noon. Robby’s already told him to take a break twice, and both times Whitaker managed to evade him.
The only reason they’re still working on the child on the gurney is because Robby was hesitant to call Whitaker away before he was certain it was over.
It’s over now.
Robby allows Whitaker another three compressions, four, before signaling him off. Whitaker steps back, sweating and panting with arms shaking from exertion and grim hope still in his expression, and the monitor drones in a flat, final confirmation.
“Time of death, 6:02 pm,” Robby reads quietly from his watch. The room goes still.
Then Whitaker drops.
