Come and get some more ridiculous The Pitt/Dennis bullshit:
Dragon hybrid Dennis who has little stubby horns, borderline vestigial wings that he keeps closely tucked in, and who breathes cold flame and ice.
Born on a Nebraska farm to a family of big, impressive, fire-breathers. When he was a baby, his older brothers actually thought he was cute; he was tiny and easily carted around, he coughed up little snowstorms, and had the babiest wings that were fun to play with.
As he got older, the novelty wore off. He stayed small, which wasn't helpful. Ice and snow are things to be kept far away from crops and livestock, and they get plenty of it in winter anyway. Small wings tear easily and don't help with balance or carrying heavy machinery. Cold will never hurt him, but fire absolutely will.
His family weren't particularly upset when he decided to move away to study medicine, and he expected that so he tells himself it doesn't hurt.
What he didn't expect was to end up surrounded by people who thought he was useful.
In the summer months, when the hospital becomes a sweaty, suffocating inferno, the rest of the staff fight over him.
It's not much of a fight because he obviously belongs to Robby and everyone knows that, but the others make good attempts at stealing him away frequently.
On the hottest days, his entire body is wrapped in shimmering wisps of fog as his cold skin rapidly warms the unbearably hot air around them. People want him in the room just to stand next to him for five minutes. During handover and teaching cases, he's aware that there is always a small, quiet shuffling as everyone tries to stand as close as possible.
He is always the first to be brought in for cases of heat-stroke. Robby had to talk to all the senior leadership team about reinforcing boundaries with patients, who wanted nothing more than for Dennis to stand by their bedsides and stroke their overheated skin all day.
Robby also has to intervene to stop Dennis from being constantly reassigned to Chairs, because a few puffs from him and the waiting room suddenly becomes a lot more bearable, and patients who have been waiting for five hours become less miserable to deal with. He thinks the nurses would have him standing there in the corner and gently blowing over everyone all day if they could.
He's apparently very useful for keeping rooms the perfect temperature for delicate equipment as well (Robby had been very patient and gentle with him the first time this particular request had been made of him, and Dennis had discovered that precise temperature-regulation was more art than science).
Sometimes, Dennis was confused by the things that people seemed to enjoy about him.
Victoria was endlessly entertained by his wings. If he wore them outside his shirt (rare, but becoming gradually less so) she couldn't resist touching them. The first time he'd felt the feather-light touch while he had been deep in charting, he had been so startled that the wings had flapped frantically and reflexively, scattering the papers on Dana's desk. He had looked around to find the source, only to be met with Victoria making that face she does when she knows she's caused problems but she's desperately trying to keep her laughter contained.
Trinity thinks his horns are 'cool' even though they're little stubby things and not all that sharp at all, but she won't elaborate on her fondness for them, and asked if she could paint them.
Robby and Jack seem to really like his eyes, based on the way they always insist on catching and keeping their focus when they talk to him. They're blue, and pretty bright, and he's not stupid, he knows that's seen as a desirable colour. But the slit, vertical pupils are downright off-putting to look at, and he knows it. He didn't even like looking at them in the mirror, and some patients are less polite than others in how they avoid making eye contact with him, so he doesn't know why Jack and Robby seem so keen on it.
Having friends has been the thing that has made him see some of his abilities in a slightly new light. There are things he never thought he'd smile about, but seeing how they make other people light up kind of makes him want to be happy about it too.
Trinity had discovered that they all essentially had ice and cold drinks on tap, even when the cans had been stewing in the broken vending machine in the August heat for days. And he had to admit that there was something vaguely pleasing about looking at the line of people waiting for him to 'bless' their drinks, and seeing even more remote figures like Park and Garcia patiently waiting their turn.
Mel had been absolutely ecstatic to discover that a puddle of spilled water could be turned into a very soothing place to lay down for a few minutes. Trinity's instinct to grab more bottles and turn it into a skating rink had been very firmly vetoed by Robby.
"You work in the emergency department. You should be able to tell me ten reasons why that's a bad idea without even having to think about it."
Shen had once asked him, completely unprompted and with an odd intensity, if both sides of his pillow were always cool. He had seemed impressed with Dennis' stuttered, unsure affirmative.
He didn't always necessarily get why people looked at him like he was pretty great, but he couldn't deny that it was kinda nice.
ok ok fluffy service dog content after all the angst i put you through. dennis has a little rope toy and he plays with patients who need to get their minds off things for a little. it’s his favorite toy, too, and everyone in the ER knows it. seriously it got misplaced once and nothing got done because everyone was searching for this toy. robby is having an awful rotten horrible shift when dennis drops the toy on his lap and tilts his head up at him
Service Dog AU Part 7
Thank you so much, I hope you enjoy!!
Hybrid Dennis is Titus Danforth's most loyal hunting dog.
He'd started out as just a plaything, a trinket that his father and sister threw to him like a meaty bone into a pit. Something to amuse himself with, to distract him while they did the real work.
He hadn't paid much attention to the trembling, whining thing, beyond an initial sneer and smirk at his flinching. He'd make pretty bait, and nothing more.
He had been vaguely aware of the high-pitched yelps echoing between the trees as he slowly followed his hounds’ excited baying. He wasn't all that engaged in the hunt, if he was being honest. Ursula had requested that he take one of her unbearable associates on a hunt, show him the ropes and a good time.
He'd pulled out all the stops, showing the man - Morgan, or something similarly uninteresting and new money - his prized hunting dogs and the little blond hybrid that he'd almost forgotten about, before giving the fearful, hungry thing a twwnty minute head start.
Morgan's eyes had been too greedy, too lazy and excited in a way that made Titus’ lip curl. He was one of those people who wanted things for the sake of it - and Titus could maybe respect that, could see it in himself, if not for the fact that he could tell that Morgan didn't enjoy the search, the struggle, the hunt. He was only in it for the climax, and quite frankly, that was fucking boring.
Titus' heart rate had remained unchallenged and unchanged throughout the whole fucking dog and pony show. He was annoyed, he was bored, he wanted it to end.
It felt like someone had hooked him up to a defibrillator when he heard the first screams.
They weren't the hybrid’s screams. Titus had heard those before. They were high-pitched, yelping and whining. These screams were slightly deeper, richer. More human.
He picked up his pace ever so slightly, curious for the first time today.
There were sticky, fresh smears of blood on the leaves that crunched and squelched beneath his feet.
Morgan's neck was ruined.
From what little he could see from where the hybrid's mouth was latched onto it, there was a deep, jagged, circular wound there that was gushing in time with the clearly slowing heartbeat.
The hybrid - tiny, trembling Dennis - was sprawled atop Morgan's twitching torso. Knees on either side, hands fisted in Morgan's bloody, tacky hair. His whole front was pressed against Morgan's in a mockery of seduction, and Titus feels his dick twitch at the fervent, desperate way Dennis tore at the wound in his neck, opening it further.
“I think he's done, boy.”
Dennis' head jerked upwards, his wide eyes nothing but deep black pools in his face, casting around for Titus for a moment in his hazy, sticky panic. His entire face from his nose down to his neck, was coated in a thick layer of blood and sinew.
He was trembling, covered in sweat, face flushed. He still managed to bare his teeth at Titus, desperate and whining.
Titus chuckled, clicked his fingers at the dogs swarming at his knees, each keen to get a taste.
They sat. Dennis snarled.
“Oh, big unfriendly sound.” His grin revealed blunt, shining teeth that somehow give off the impression of being almost as sharp as Dennis' set. “Very cute. You know, normally I don't abide a nipping puppy. They gotta learn their place, you know?”
Dennis' entire body was rigid, shuddering minutely from the effort of holding so still. His eyes were watery but they kept track of Titus like his life depended on it. There's something hungry there that made Titus' stomach twist and turn in sheer excitement. Dennis' jeans were getting soaked as Morgan's slowly cooling blood seeps into them.
Titus tilted his head. Dennis' own head jerked, mirroring the movement, helplessly transfixed.
“Then again, I believe in giving credit where it's due. And good boys deserve treats.”
****
As far as anyone else was concerned, everything changed between the morning and the afternoon. Nobody else was privy to the whys and wherefores, all they knew was that suddenly, Titus never went anywhere unaccompanied.
Dennis either trailed his footsteps, or hung off his arm, smiling brightly and whispering in his ear, which would earn the occasional uptick at the corner of Titus' mouth. Sometimes, Dennis would skip ahead, circling the perimeter before ambling back to Titus' side. Sometimes, he would be gone for a good twenty minutes, and would return with blood crusted under his half-claws.
“Have fun?” Titus would huff, the most indulgent sound anyone had ever heard from him, and ruffle his hands over Dennis' ears. The hybrid would nod, leaning heavily into the touch, closing his eyes contentedly.
Dennis would lounge by Titus' side at meetings - and nobody commented on the fact that Ursula was quieter than before, would sit tense and silent in a way they rarely saw her. The sound of palm cracking against cheek never reverberated behind closed doors again.
Sometimes, Dennis would fold himself to sit neatly on the floor and lean against Titus' legs, apparently entirely uninterested in anything but the slow pass of the man's hand through his hair, over his ears. He would rub his face against Titus' knee, and for all the world he'd seem like he was paying no attention to anything that was said.
But sometimes, someone would do the wrong thing. A word, a comment, a sneer. Titus' body would tense, and Dennis' eyes would slowly open. From where he stayed, resting his head against the man's knee, his glittering eyes would trickle across the room until they found the perpetrator. He would stare for a moment, taking it all in, and close them again.
He would be gone all night, and return fresh and happy and smelling like pennies.
***
Chester didn't last long.
The official story was that illness took him, but all the staff on duty that night would whisper amongst themselves, swear that they had seen two dark, shining eyes reflecting the light, glinting through the gap of the patriarch's doorway.
It didn't take much to bribe a coroner if your name was Danforth.
Titus moved into his father's rooms, gutted everything, and was in situ within a week.
***
Titus was unashamed about showering Dennis with gifts.
Whatever Dennis wanted, Dennis got. Often, he got things he'd never even thought to want, let alone ask for.
Clothes, made to measure and with space immaculately cut to provide openings for Dennis' soft, happily wagging tail.
Cars, shiny and bright, which Dennis didn't actually seem all that interested in, beyond smiling at the colours.
The finest food made by gourmet chefs, or the greasy takeout that made Titus grimace. The snacks that Dennis was partial to munching on in his indolent moments between the hunts that made his cheeks flush and eyes shine bright.
Shoes, jewellery, watches, gaming consoles, exotic plants, three entire cows whose entrails everyone was braced to scrape from the ground, but which Dennis only wanted to feed and pet and cuddle up next to in the afternoons.
Dennis never wanted for anything again, and Titus found it an entirely pleasing system.
Good boys did, after all, deserve treats.
So I was talking to @lancey-lance-963 and our beautiful group chat yesterday about an idea that popped into my noggin, about Dennis whose mother had always been desperate for a girl (PLEASE check out lancey's amazing fic on it here).
His mom had already had four boys, and then when Dennis (she'd been so ready for a Denise) came along, she just...went with it. He was pretty, and she deserved a little baby girl, so that's what she did. Dressed up her baby boy as pretty as his father would allow, made him grow out his curls, and made him her little baby girl.
He was kept away from 'boy things' like roughhousing and farm work, kept inside with his mama to learn to cook and clean and keep a house.
And as he grows up, he's confused because he didn't think he wanted to be a girl, but at the same time, he enjoys some of the things he grew up doing. But he also missed out on being a boy, and he doesn't really know what that means.
Enter Jack and Robby, who are trying their best to navigate the tangled mess that is affirming Dennis' gender while also trying to give him the space to explore his past trauma and self-expression.
In particular, I think that shaving would be an interesting experience for Dennis, seeing as he's one of those men who doesn't ever seem to grow facial hair:

hello!!!
I love love love hybrid Dennis. Would you please consider making a master post to link all of them together?
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you like it! This is a great idea, I've made a masterlist linked below, and I'll update it when I add new parts!
PS I'm sorry to anyone who's had the same ask seemingly answered repeatedly, I messed up the numbering of the entries in the series so I've had to amend and save some entries several times!!
Service Dog Dennis AU Masterlist
sorry for the inbox spam this one is also angsty & patient death so beware idk and no pressure to write 🙂↕️
dennis being a service dog for a patient and maybe he senses something is wrong and thinks about fetching a doctor but the vitals are all fine and everyone’s busy with more immediate trauma patients. dennis closes his eyes and the patient codes
Service dog AU part 6
Sorry this took so long! Thank you so much for the prompt, I hope this sort of does it justice!
Dennis likes all the patients that want him around. He likes being able to help people on their very worst day, being able to soothe their fear and frustration. It never failed to make his tail waggle when he was settled in or against a patient’s bed, and their hands became steadier as they smoothed over his head or squeezed gently along his tail, and there were bonus points if his presence also managed to help friends and family. Often, Dennis would find a patient gently redirecting his attention to their spouse or parents or children, and Dennis was all too happy to either lean against them or sit unobtrusively wherever he fit, until they felt able to reach out and make hesitant contact.
Dennis tries not to pick favourites, but the time he secretly feels most valuable, most - most good is when he can help a patient who doesn’t have anyone to visit them. He never knows why, unless they decide to volunteer the information, and he doesn’t consider it necessary to know. All that matters to him is that someone is scared, sick, often in pain, and besides the doctors and nurses, they are alone.
Dennis will spend as long as he possibly can sitting with them; sometimes they like to chatter as much as they’re able, sometimes they want to listen to Dennis while he babbles happily about whatever comes to his mind. Sometimes they just want to hold Dennis in silence. That one hurts, because he feels like he wants to do more, but he takes comfort in the settling of the monitors attached to them, and reminds himself that it’s not about what he wants, or what he would find comforting.
Mr Wisheart is a chatterer, and Dennis is boldly unashamed in his favouritism.
Drabble
I wanted to do a nice domestic drabble to lube my fingers up (hah) for more writing. So here is a small and fairly un-edited Jensard fic. It's a bit rough, I'm trying to be faster with writing. Has a dog in it.
It's SO CUTE, look AT IT
Service dog Dennis part 4
This prompt was from a lovely user who wishes to remain anonymous, and who wanted to see Dennis' blatant Robby favouritism!
The thing is, Robby is undoubtedly Dennis' favourite. Dana likes to say that Abbot can sulk all he wants at being a close second, but first runner-up is still a loser (Dennis makes sure to rub his head against Dr Abbot's belly extra hard when Dana tells him that).
But there's really no denying it, and Dennis makes it very hard for anyone to try.
Made a little sketch inspired by your AU because Service Dog Whitaker will not leave my head
Oh my god this is SO INCREDIBLE! Thank you so much, this is such an HONOUR!
Not only that but you've actually made the canine aspects of Dennis work so well and blend seamlessly in a way that I sometimes struggled to picture in my own head!! His little pointy teeth are so perfect! And that's EXACTLY how I had pictured his ears - the one-up-one-down flop, the shape, the pointiness, the fluff!!
This is literally so amazing, thank you so much! I'm working my way through all the lovely asks/prompts I've got and this has absolutely made my day and made it so fun to picture all the ideas everyone has contributed!
Thank you so much for all the asks/requests/comments on my silly lil service dog Dennis AU! Keep chattering to me, I do love it! I really just wanted to assure everyone that I'm not ignoring any requests, I am working on them and will get to them, it just might take a while!

Where I've been, for those wondering:-
So it's been a very busy few years. I got engaged (wedding this August!) to the beautiful, the wonderful, the sanity-keeper @crazyamoeba . We have a lovely house and I've been gardening a lot as a sort of external therapy.
I had some shitty health issues.
But most of all I sort of came to the realisation that I'm suffering pretty significantly with burnout. It's a hideous mess of ADHD, anxiety and depression that affects my personal life, work, and my writing. I've still been writing in the time I haven't posted, but it's sporadic. The ideas haven’t stopped, and I have about 8 fics on the go for about 3 different fandoms, which doesn't make things easy!
I'm trying very hard to pull myself together and get back into stuff. It upsets me when I see that the most recent fic I posted was about 3 years ago now. I still have so many, so much to write.
I'm getting there, very slowly, but I think I'm getting there, guys.
That's ME! That's MY (future) wife! That's our house and our garden and our horrible cat!
hi! I love your service hybrid!Dennis stories! It’s so sweet 🥹🩷
I know in them Dennis has an extra set of fluffy ears and a tail but does he have any other more canine features in your mind?
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you like it! I've actually been thinking a lot about what other canine features Dennis has, because I do feel like it's not just the ears and tail.
His teeth are all definitely sharper, canine teeth, which I've made small references to but not really made much of it yet. I was also toying with the idea of giving him semi-retractable claws, more like a fox. I kinda want to lean into him being this sweet, happy guy who wants to help people, but he does have some physical features that some people find off-putting (I feel so bad for wanting to do this to him).
I also thought briefly about giving him some teeny tiny whispy whiskers that you'd only really see if you got up close, but I'm not totally convinced by myself on that one!
I'm always taking ideas for how this whole thing might play out so if you (or anyone!) have any ideas you'd like to share (I'll credit you!) then feel free to throw them at me!
Service dog Dennis part 5
This prompt was from a lovely user who wishes to remain anonymous, and who wanted to see Dennis' blatant Robby favouritism!
The thing is, Robby is undoubtedly Dennis' favourite. Dana likes to say that Abbot can sulk all he wants at being a close second, but first runner-up is still a loser (Dennis makes sure to rub his head against Dr Abbot's belly extra hard when Dana tells him that).
But there's really no denying it, and Dennis makes it very hard for anyone to try.
Absolutely in love with your hybrid Dennis au! I've been thinking about something similar and then I saw yours and aahhhh it's lovely!
Thank you so much, that means a lot! To be honest I saw someone post a joke about Dennis needing a service dog vest and I took it from there, so I can't take the credit for the idea!
And you totally should go for it, the world needs more service dog Dennis!
service dog dennis being trained to signal for anxiety and panic responses in the staff after pittfest. nobody expected how often he’d be signaling all the staff
Thank you so much for all your amazing suggestions! I'll try to get around to them all but for now I hope you enjoy Dennis doing Very Good Boy Work
Service Dog Dennis AU Part 4
Nobody had explicitly told him, but they hadn't needed to. After Pittfest, Dennis' role in the ED changed.
Or at least...maybe it didn't change so much as intensify. In a way that none of the staff had really expected it to need to.

Service dog Dennis part 3
As much as he tries not to make it public knowledge, Robby's not a completely unfeeling asshole, so he doesn't think it's a huge surprise that he likes Dennis as much as everyone else in the ED seems to.
For anyone following me for service dog Dennis (I see you and love you all, thank you so much) please for the love of Robby give me any requests for things you'd like to see, I've got performance anxiety.
