Once again, I'm feeling completely overwhelmed by everything and the only thing that would help is taking a break and having time to just relax, but I can't have that, so I'm just sitting here vibrating with anxiety and wallowing in misery.
Tumblr,
As you’re probably aware, the coronavirus disease, or COVID-19, has now been found in countries all over the globe. This is an understandably disconcerting moment for many, but there are steps we can all take to help mitigate the effect on our communities.
COVID-19 is spreading, but misinformation and disinformation are spreading even faster. The most responsible thing you can do is protect yourself from both the disease and false information. Being prepared with facts and data instead of assumptions and fabrications will help inform how you can best prepare for COVID-19.
Here are some resources you can trust:
WHO provides daily updates surrounding COVID-19’s spread, infection rate, and general influence on our society. Their latest update given on March 3, 2020, details that there is a shortage of personal protective equipment for healthcare professionals. They also provide a very handy FAQ section, where you can learn more about how to protect yourself and your community.
Every day Worldometer updates its website with the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each country that has been affected. Worldometer has been rated one of the best free reference websites by the American Library Association, and for good reason: it lists every single one of its regular sources here, and lists the source of every COVID-19 update at the bottom of the COVID-19 page.
Your local health department will often have the most up-to-date information specific to your immediate area, including how to proceed if you believe you may be showing symptoms of the virus. If you live in the United States, you can find the contact information for your health department by visiting the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).
There’s another thing about this news that a lot of places are not talking about: the toll on one’s mental health, especially if you are someone who struggles with anxiety. If you find your concerns about being prepared are crossing a line that affects your mental health, please consider reaching out to a loved one who can guide you to help, a mental health professional, or an organization set up to help those in need.
Here are a couple of organizations you can trust:
Crisis Text Line is free, 24/7 support. Just text 741741 from anywhere in the United States. The Crisis Text Line will connect you with a trained Crisis Counselor.
National Alliance on Mental Illness (@namiorg) offers free support and resources for those who are struggling. NAMI can be reached Monday through Friday, 10 am - 6 pm EST at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or by email at [email protected].
Take care of yourselves, Tumblr. Wash your hands well, practice keeping a safe distance from others, only wear a mask if you believe you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms and could infect others (or are immunocompromised yourself), and remember to fact check everything that you see. Head on over to @world-wide-what for a refresher on what fake news looks like and how it spreads. Pass those tips onto others when you see them accidentally spreading false information.

there was an idea, stark knows this, called the avengers initiative. the idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. to see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could.
I have a godawful headache because I slept in a weird position (an irritatingly frequent occurrence) and everything is so up-in-the-air right now, there's so much uncertainty that I just can't quite relax.

I've recently figured out that my favorite things in videogames essentially boil down to "expansive exploration/hiking sim, with maybe some light combat and/or puzzles to keep the world from feeling empty" I know there are about a million of those, but are there any more obscure games you know of that really focus in on exploration over combat/story/etc, that you wish more people knew about?
My favourite example of the type is definitely A Short Hike; it’s about climbing a mountain trying to get a cell phone signal, which is about a low-key as it gets, with all sorts of random people to meet and activities to engage in along the way. Eastshade is another, which could probably best be described as an open-world painting simulator. Lost Ember is pretty high on my list, too.
However, all of those are popular enough that I imagine you’re already familiar with them, so if it’s obscure you’re after (which for the purpose of this post I’m going to arbitrarily define as “has fewer than 250 reviews on Steam”), you might check out any of Elegy for a Dead World, Feather, Lake Ridden, Morels: The Hunt, Shape of the World, There the Light, TIMEframe, The Wanderer or The Wild Eternal. They don’t all meet the “not feeling empty” criterion – in fact, for Elegy for a Dead World and TIMEframe in particular, the emptiness is very much the point! – but they’re all open-world walking sims with a focus on natural environments that I’ve really enjoyed.

The dark dunes of Mars: Moreux crater
Known for its wide swathes of rippling, textured, gently sloping dunes, the Terra Sabaea region on Mars is home to many fascinating geological features – including the prominent Moreux crater, the star of a new image from ESA’s Mars Express.
The Moreux crater on Mars showcases numerous intriguing geological processes and features.
It sits at the northern edge of Terra Sabaea, a large area of the Red Planet that is speckled with impact craters and covered in glacial flows, dunes, fretted terrain and intricate ridge networks.
When compared to other impact craters on both Mars and Earth, Moreux crater appears a little misshapen and messy – the result of ongoing erosion over martian history.
Its egg-shaped rim is broken up, its dark walls are ridged, rippled and mottled, and its centre features a prominent clustered ‘peak’, created as material from the crater floor rebounded and rose upwards following the initial impact.
It is difficult to get a sense of scale when viewing this peak from orbit, but Moreux crater’s central peak is sizeable, reaching around two kilometres in height.
The crater itself is roughly three kilometres deep, and spans 135 kilometres from edge to edge.
The range of colours featured in images like this one, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera on Mars Express, reveals much about the composition of a particular region, material or feature.
In the case of Moreux crater, the colour differences are stark: while the surrounding material is visible in hues of butterscotch and caramel, the crater’s walls are dark, resembling a smudged ring of ash or charcoal.
Dark brown and black dunes cover the crater floor, while the peak remains a pale yellow-orange.
Dark, prominent ejecta, comprising material flung outwards during the crater-forming collision, spread outwards from the crater rim, discolouring and encroaching upon the lighter surrounding terrain.
This varied colour palette reflects an equally varied geological composition.
The dunes within and around the crater are thought to contain sandy material rich in pyroxene and olivine: rock-forming minerals that are mafic (containing magnesium and iron) and characterised by their typically dark appearance.
Martian winds are also thought to have swept and gathered fine, basaltic, volcanic sand and ash into and around the crater.
Basaltic rock is commonplace on both Mars and other celestial bodies.
It is a key component of the maria, or seas, on the Moon, for instance, and causes them to appear visibly and notably darker than the lunar highlands.
Many of the features, such as dunes and flows, surrounding the central peak and southern region of Moreux crater (to the left of the image) appear to have been formed by ice.
This is thought to have occurred in the form of substantial episodes of glacial activity over the past few million years.
Many other features show signs of wind erosion, or having been formed via wind-related processes – most notably, the dunes covering the crater floor.
These dunes are largely sickle-shaped (barchanoid), and reveal much about wind direction within and across the crater.
From the orientation of the dunes, scientists have inferred a complex system of prevailing winds, likely influenced by the topography of the crater itself.
Dunes to the north and east of the central peak are largely influenced by winds coming from the northeast, while dunes sitting west of the park are controlled by winds from the northwest.
These cross-cutting winds create an interesting and unique dune morphology within Moreux crater, adding to the feature’s intrigue.

So I haven’t been around in like... 50,000 years, mostly because my situation has improved and I’ve felt less of a need for this little safe space.
I got out of my old, shitty job after my ableist fuckwit of a boss blew a gasket over me leaving for a couple hours to go to a doctor’s appointment that I’d asked off for. The assistant manager literally screamed at me as I was walking away and made a huge scene. It was awful. I reluctantly went back, but got cold shouldered and basically forced to train someone else to do my job. Then I didn’t got to work one morning because there was a tornado warning and a funnel cloud spotted fairly close. Couldn’t call because the phones were out. Got fired the next day for being a no call, no show.
It was a mess, but also a blessing. Now I have a much less stressful job, with a far kinder boss, and it’s also part-time, which is great. I have a lot more time to decompress now, and I don’t get nearly as overwhelmed.
I’m feeling a little stressed lately because I’ve been spending my days off working around the house and haven’t really taken a day to rest in a while. Plus there’s the whole coronavirus thing. I’m not super worried about it, but I do work with the public, and there’s just a lot of uncertainty, which always makes me feel a bit uneasy.
So hear I am. I hope you’ve all been well. If anyone wants to chat, my inbox is always open, and I am always glad to lend an ear.
Some calming vibes for trying times
