On one hand he’s always been confident in his own ability and is the kind of guy who wants to achieve his ambitions on his own merit instead of taking the easy way out and, prior to his time in Radiator Springs, was very untrusting and thought of himself as a one-man-show, refusing offers of help from others and not recognizing just how much he owes to those who support him.

On the other hand, by his own (accidental) admission when Sally first brought him to the Wheel Well Motel, he’s never really been happy in his life until his time in Radiator Springs. He’s also quite literally already entered into a predatory contract in order to have the chance in the first place to achieve things, his agent Harv is never seen watching any of his races and when Lightning goes missing Harv is more excited about the publicity than he is concerned about Lightning’s safety, Harv also is very pushy, cutting Lightning off in conversations, not listening to what he says, and even threatening to fire Mack, Lightning’s hauler and arguably his only friend at the start of the movie, if Lightning doesn’t immediately leave Radiator Springs when he’s found by a search party. Additionally in Cars 3 when the new owner of Rust-Eze, Sterling, is dissapointed in Lightning’s racing he tries to have Lightning retire against his will and essentially sell out, shilling an absurd amount of branded merchandise, Lightning again makes a risky deal in order to continue racing: if he wins the first race of the upcoming season then he gets to decide if and when he quits, but anything else and he’ll go with Sterling’s plan.

All in all, I think whether or not he’d make a contract with Kyubey depends a lot on what the circumstances are and where he is in life, but for the purposes of the poll I want to leave the situation open-ended and see what people think.
