The Twilght Zone was made because Rod Serling was mortified by the crimes against Emmet Till and wanted to make a show that spurred discussion of social injustice.
Networks weren’t willing to make such politically charged shows, however. To get around this, Rod Serling repackaged this goal as “sci-fi stories that sometimes discuss social issues”. The network agreed, and he promptly made a show that was primarily metaphors for the topics he wanted to discuss.
It’s a remarkable show.
