In honour of finishing my first Heated Rivalry fanfic, have a fanart that I've been staring at entirely too long. Affinity and I are slowly getting better at communicating but we're still mere acquaintances.

Scott and Kip get a lot of invitations now that they're the one couple everybody talks about. But this invitation is just a little bit different from the usual. At least neither of them had expected to be asked to spend a weekend at Shane Hollander's cottage, with Shane. And Ilya Rozanov. Especially since there's a little bit of history between Scott and the other two players. But sometimes, a relaxed weekend in the middle of nowhere is just what you need.

As a Torrent fan, I've been refreshing this particularly anxiously today :(

He’s a high level athlete with an unstable home life who actually cares whether his partner is having a good time. He is extremely sensitive to the signals other people are putting out and he is paying attention. And he’s built a career on some level on being willing and able to repeat a motion over and over until he’s told it’s right and then replicate that consistently. That probably translates pretty well to sex. So Ilya probably has a solid, well-earned reputation as a good sexual partner, but he’s not naturally gifted or super experienced when he first hooks up with Shane.

After a while of talking about how Anya acts the trainer says there’s nothing to worry about, Anya likes Shane just fine, it’s just that she sees him as the boss and is acting accordingly

And Ilya is like. But. I’m the one who adopted her? And raised her before Shane got here?? And the trainer is just like yeah well she sees you more like an equal. And Ilya is like WAIT she thinks Shane is in charge of both of us?? And the trainer is just like well do you interact in a way that would make her think that?

Ilya’s life flashes before his eyes as he thinks of all the times Shane has come over with a snack for Ilya and a treat for Anya, or all the times Shane has announced they’re all going for an after dinner walk, or pets Ilya’s hair and tells him he did a good job at practice, or the fact that he uses the same warning tone with Anya when she misbehaves as he does with Ilya when he’s causing problems on purpose

First of all when are final exams written? Like what month and is it always the same month and how many weeks does it take? Do you have school in between exam days or are those free for graduating students to study, like how they are in Germany? Or do final exams happen when the other students already have summer vacation? Just in general, what is the timeline of final exams? And so you write your final exams and then what happens? Is that when prom happens? Or is prom not actually for graduating students? Like what exactly is prom and is there a graduating class specific prom? Also how much time is there between the last final exam and graduation? Like the ceremony with the caps and the gowns. When does graduation usually happen? Is there free time before it, where the graduating students are basically already done with school and so they can just enjoy their free time until their graduation day? Or is that only a very short few days? Also is there another more party-like celebration after the graduation ceremony or is it just the ceremony and then everyone goes home to celebrate with family and friends?

Just basically. explain to me how final exams and prom and graduation works and the timeline of it all and assume that I know Nothing. Also I'd love to know how it was in the 80s but for my own sake I'm just gonna assume that it's pretty similar to how it is today.

I'd love it if somebody could give me an answer to all of these questions or also just some of them, if all of them is too much.

First, I'd say you "take" an exam, not that you "write" one, just FYI. Most exams would've been on Scantron sheets/multiple choice because this was before they moved to have high school students write so much.

In my particular high school, we had semesters, so school was broken into two halves, Sept-Jan & Jan-first week in June, with exams at the end of each semester. Most classes continued all year, but some were only one-semester long (health, driver's ed, etc.) We had 7 class periods per day and went from 7:30-2:30, so, like, I'd say I have Calculus first period and then English second period or whatever.

From what I recall, regular school would end on, say, the final Thursday in May, and then Friday, Monday, and Tuesday you'd spend 1/2 the day taking each of 2 finals. So Friday morning you'd go to first period and take the exam all morning, then take the exam for second period in the afternoon. Monday would be 3-4, Tuesday would be 5-6, and then Wednesday you'd take the exam for 7th period and then school was over for the year ~noonish.

And then the actual graduation ceremony was that Friday. So, pretty fast, not a lot of time in-between. And no school-sponsored party after that, that I recall, although students/their families did throw parties.

(In college there were a few "reading days" to study between the end of regular classes and the start of exams, but I don't remember having those in high school.)

One thing you do seem to be a little confused about: just about every class has a final exam, for all four years of high school. I think there are actually tests you have to pass to graduate now, just like basic reading and math? In some states, maybe? But that wasn't a thing back then. It's not like, oh, this is an exam to see whether you can graduate.

It's just, again, like college--you get to the end and there's a big test over everything you've learned all semester, and it's a big part of your grade. So there wouldn't be some kids already on Summer vacation--the freshman would have to take their own exams at the same time as the seniors were taking theirs.

Where it factors into graduating is if you're a senior taking a class you need to graduate, then it's possible, if you fail the exam and therefore fail the class, that you might not get to graduate. There were always those stories about people dressed in their cap and gown, ready to graduate, and they're pulled out of line because they failed senior English and have to go to summer school instead of graduating.

I'm pretty sure they'd mail your final report card once the final exams were graded.
