southerncrossrpg.tumblr.com is the dev blog of my game, Sins of the Southern Cross.
What does your workspace look like?
My room has 3 desks (yes) for different purposes; one for the laptop I'm using, one for reading or writing on paper, and one for miscellaneous crafts. I generally start out with a clean table and end up having piles of wires, gadgets, and papers by the end of each month.
What do you listen to as you work?
I've been listening to sad and melancholic music recently, mostly soundtracks, classical, alternative rock, or indie.
What's your favorite thing to work on? Least? What part do you have the most difficulty with?
I enjoy composing the background music for my game. I am a bit bad at getting graphics correctly without some post-drawing editing however I don't really think I hate it.
What were some inspirations for your game?
The Silent Hill series. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the melancholic and grotesque vibes in the games. Also, an indie game called Desert Nightmare which is set in an American town. Research on the subject of American horror led me to articles and music about Gothic Americana, particularly Southern Gothic.
What do you look forward to upon/after release?
I hope I can tell the story of the game well and hope that players enjoy it. I'm not sure how much of horror the game can provide as of yet, though, as I am aiming to completely avoid using jumpscares.
Any advice for other game devs?
I am new to this so I don't think I'd be a good source of advice, but as a long-time worldbuilder (and conlanger) I think one should feel free to create, craft, and weave stories together to form a sort of "organic" and relatable plot.
Advice for people interested in making a game?
There are many programs/engines out there that can help you make a game, some free, some not. Whichever you choose, stick to it, learn it, and have fun.
Sharing the things I create and what I love doing motivates me. I'd like to make my stuff accessible to people. On that note, the game and its OST will be released for free!
