If you want to make your OCs but don't have a way to make references or art of your own, I use this website!
Courtney's home on the indie web.
It can filter by lots of different things, and I've used it as the base to have refs to send to people I was commissioning!
/website contains animations and bright colors/
If your OC had the chance to be good and didn't take it, why?
If your OC had the chance to be evil and didn't take it, why?
Why does your OC dress the way they do? Is there a motivation behind it? Is there anything that's key to their look?

What's the worst first impression your OC has ever given?
What's something your OC knows about themself that they hope no one will ever pick up on?
What's something your OC has done that makes them feel guilty but they can never apologize for?
What's a small, ultimately harmless secret your OC has that could still ruin them if it got out?
The funny thing is, I think I will actually pivot the kinds of prompts I do here toward developing OCs within the plots and stories they exist in. That will likely mean less engagement with fewer funny and largely applicable posts, but I do think OC development is best done within the story they exist in. Or if you don't have plots, I think it would be good to imagine the kind of plot you could put your OC in.
I hope you all still have a lot of fun and think about what I post from now on. If you want more memes and general prompts, feel free to check my backlog too, and I may still occasionally post in that tone.

Someone in the tags of a post asked so I’ll say now: it’s always okay to reblog with direct commentary if you want! You don’t have to keep your thoughts just to the tags!
What’s some goals yall have for creative improvement?
I’m trying to draw more, since I write a lot but my creative visions always collate in my head as webcomics or light novels. My goal is to have 10 drawings with color done this month.
I love all the different art forms you can put an OC in. Writing, comics, webcomics, video games, visual novels, it's so fun seeing all the things people can do with their characters.
a person of color saying maybe writers should step out of their comfort zone is not being a bully nor an abuser. you prick
Mm, you're right that I used the word abusive incorrectly. My apologies for that.
I love tumblr <3

OCism is also killing good writings. Because writers are creating characters first before having themes and goals. That's why your story sucked.
You have a character sheet and all sorts of details but you can't write a plot to save your life. Your pacing is dogshit.
This is one of the mildest opinions I have about writing. You people are absolutely not ready for my truly scathing takes. Stay strong.
I'm gonna be honest, if a Tumblr post mildly shitting on what you perceive as a flaw you have, has the capacity to make you give up on pursuing writing, then you're the type of artist who's going to be unwilling to improve or learn and will forever create bad art, which is still art, but not something I think even the people around you would lament on "missing out". The alternative is also you're the artist who will double down on said flaw just to "spite the critics", which if you also embody the average fandom tumblr-user, will probably result in the most tone deaf racist art imaginable. So also, not a big loss.
Bad art has worth. Even if it is just to the artist, that is enough. I agree with the writing advice here and I agree that you shouldn't get so discouraged by a single tumblr post that you quit forever, but what is this nonsense that it's only worth making things if they're good? Or even more ridiculous, that if you express your discouragement here you're on the fast track to racist trash???
Oh if no one will say it, I will:
Op is being a fucking asshole for no good reason and is butthurt at pushback.
I can say it in a way that isn’t completely intentionally hurtful to novice writers or people who write character first.
Writing stories with cohesive plot is a whole different wheelhouse from oc creation and character lore development, so it’s going to be tough to nail the storytelling you’re used to seeing from authors you admire.
If you’re going to turn your beloved OC into a story, try and think of a plot as robust as your character before you commit to writing if you want it to come out cohesive. Other folks aren’t going to know your OC or their lore as well as you, and taking that for granted is tough to get over! I would try and think of the timeline of your OC’s story in a way that may overlap with pacing similar to works you’ve enjoyed before. Or look for stories that are similar to what you’re trying to do and learn from them!
Most of all, never let some insensitive dickhead dictate what you try and accomplish. Don’t let bullies say mean bullshit and then backpedal to saying you’re the sensitive one, actually. Your stories deserve to be told and you deserve constructive advice that doesn’t tear you down for trying.
you have robot ocs hi hello yes robot ocs i heard robot ocs do you wish to share random lore stuff about robot ocs maybe?
unless you don't think about them anymore because i think those posts were from a year ago-
I actually have them as the only characters up on my Artfight for this year :0 I've been thinking about them a lot! Once I get my hands on the right setup I want to try my hand at boarding comics for them, or at least have digital copies of their designs.
Anyways, Lore:
Meet Angel!
A crystaline robot made of disjointed crystals hovering together. The robot has three legs, two arms, and a head with one big glowing eye. The crystals are in alternating colors of purple and blue.
She was an art installation in the lobby of a five-star hotel in Dubai, and METCU (the android who can give sentience to AIs) used her very basic "Judge the best way to sparkle in the light" AI to prove to humanity that he was legit.
After he brought her to life, she became something of the "face" of the robot race METCU was creating and spent a good century as METCU's assistant and PR person. Angel later came to resent this, and left METCU and is on very strained terms with him as she feels he used her for his own ends rather than any actual care for her.
Her crystals are magnetic and hover, she's 20 feet tall, and she is now determined to master any kind of art form humans have made.
