I have this English teacher named Mr. Green. Now, I don’t do my homework in Mr. Green’s class, and I’m fine with taking the zero, but Mr. Green seems to have this vendetta against me. He does this thing where he hands back graded homework—which I obviously haven’t done—and he’ll give me a blank piece of notebook paper with my name scribbled across the top and an obnoxiously oversize red zero drawn in the middle. It was cutesy the first time, and maybe the second, and if I’m stretching it, maybe the third, too. But now it’s getting old, and he’s just wasting paper. I keep them all, though. I’m planning on making a collage at the end of the year to give him as a gift. Or maybe I can just superglue them to his car
“You all right?” He asks slowly.
I don’t answer him. I sit on my bed and I pull my sweatshirt over my head.
Nothing. Empty. Numb.
“Leo?” He gets up from his bed and comes over to me, stopping once he’s standing right in front of me.
“I’m fine,” I mumble.
“Right. And I’m a virgin,” he scoffs.
I look up at him with a narrow-eyed glare.
“What? It’s the first thing I could think of that’s not true,” he says.
“Pigs flying? Blue moon? Tupac is alive?” I throw out a few suggestions a little too aggressively. This is so stupid.
“Tupac could be alive!”
“I’m not doing this with you,” I murmur before putting my head in my hands.
