Filling the gap the community you left behind used to is important! You cannot leave a harmful behaviour if you don't replace what it was doing for you, because it was filling some role.

Do you need people to hang out with? Find a new social community, online or off (Meetup.com is good for in-person stuff.)

Do you need something to spend creative energy on? Find a new hobby or fandom you want to create for. (Again, meetup.com is good; the fanfic exchange community can also be good! If it was a specific fandom you need to avoid, simply do not offer or ask for it.)

Do you need something to simply do with yourself, period? Find a new stim of similar type. (Was it music videos? Art? video essays about a certain subject? Visual stim?)

If you're having to leave a hyperfixation, it IS possible, I promise. It will take time, and be incredibly frustration at first, but if you start seeking out new media or stuff to be interested in you can redirect.

It will not be easy. It will not be comfortable. You might be better suited switching "regions" of the fandom (from the under-18 to over-18 spaces, from the whump to the wild space AU, etc. etc.) but simply cutting off the old media and inundating yourself with a dozen new options from whatever your library has, whatever games you can find, anything...

You can do it. You should do it. You deserve spaces and community that makes you happy. A little discomfort is worth it to find happier spaces, for you and others.

get out of the house. go for a walk or go window shopping. go take a class or do an activity outside the house, like idk, painting ceramics, rug tufting, yoga in the park.

make something. could be a thing you know how to do that you haven't done much of, or a whole new thing. make linzer cookies. learn to knit. work on that oc you neglected.

talk to people not involved in the drama about things that are not the drama.

have multiple communities--making one your end all is a bad idea

[Leaving A Community]

Hello, my qualifications on this subject are that I’ve left five communities this way (one of which was extremely toxic). I get it if you don’t wanna go through with something such as nuking your online presence btw

-you can either ween off your posts or stop all together at once, regardless at some point you gotta stop posting

-What I did was log out of all my accounts to look less suspicious, but you can also delete everything. Regardless get away from the accounts connected to the community you want to leave.

-ok this part is a tad extreme, but I changed the names I use most. So I went from [redacted] -> Saint/Yves/whatever… also changed my main neopronouns (still use the old ones) and also everything else I made completely public…

-take a short (or long) break before re-joining if you choose to do so. Makes it a little less suspicious and also gives you time to think if you want to /should re-join. (<- discourse based community leaving)

-Don’t talk about your old blogs/accounts. (Optional)

TLDR: Nuke your shit and go into witness protection (/j)

One thing that's helped me leave these communities a lot easier is remembering that you are like. Allowed to lie. You are allowed to lie to these people if it means you can faster leave a community you don't want to be in, especially if it's toxic.

One way I personally implemented this was by telling everyone there that my mental health was doing bad, and that I'm taking a break from social media as a whole for a bit. Then I slowly started letting myself become more and more inactive there. First I unfollowed the tags on tumblr. I put all of the discord servers I was in for that community into a folder and put it near the bottom of my server list (where I put all the servers I'm inactive in) After a good while, i started quietly shadow blocking and unfollowing friends and moots from there. It was slow, it took multiple months to complete the process, especially because it was hard to leave behind all of those memories, but it worked.

If someone from there ever tried to reach out, for any reason, I'd tell them that my mental health was still down, or that I was busy, and that I couldn't talk now. I'd also try to purposefully wait a few days to respond to sell the 'hiatus' thing.

I went back and started deleting old posts, tweets, messages, etc, to prepare for when I fully left, so new people who I was trying to make friends with or connections with wouldn't see my old posts and think I was still a part of it. Then, I did it. I left.

I left all the servers without any message about it. I blocked everyone from that community that I knew. I changed my bio to explicitly say I was against that community. And I never looked back.

A big reason I left the radqueer community is because of the blatant antisemitism that goes on in the community, through those who support or use the term "transn*zi" and labels relating to it.
