HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!
Hello to all of my wonderful friends, it is June 1st! Officially the first day of pride month.
I'd like to start off pride month with a happy start, so without further ado here is some Good News :)
In North Carolina, USA, a South Eastern state along the coast, the Episcopal Church has just elected and welcomed in its very first out lesbian bishop. Bishop Sarah Fisher is married and now presides over 66 parishes and two college campus ministries. (1, 2)
In Hungary, Hungarian police have announced that they will allow the Budapest Pride Parade to take place this year following the removal of former Prime-Minister Viktor Orbán. This happens after years of protests and community action in Hungary, including last year's Budapest Pride Parade in which more than 100,000 people defied the ban in one of the largest protests against the then Prime-Minister. This year's parade is planned for June 27th. (3, 4)
Dr. Q Manivannan(they/them) and Iris Duane(she/her) were elected in Scotland on May 8th as the first two out transgender MSPs'. Following the election, the new MSPs' are quoted with the following:
“My name is Dr Q Manivannan, I am a transgender Tamil immigrant, my pronouns are they/them, I am to some in this country everything that the hateful despise and I am standing here as your MSP now with care.” per The Independent, to a crowd in Edinburgh.
“Hope. All we ask for is hope," Iris Duane via Instagram Stories, per People. (5, 6)
In Kenya, following over a decade of legal battles, Audrey Mbugua has won another landmark case for transgender rights. The Kenyan High Court has ruled that refusing to update gender markers on official documentation is a constitutional violation. Additionally, they have ordered government agencies to begin receiving and considering gender marker applications within sixty days of the decision. (7, 8)
