And If My Shadowâs All That Survives
rey & obi-wan ;; @soresuandsnarkâ
Reyâs awestruck expression made him smile. He should have thought about this- of course she wouldnât have seen so much greenery before. This must be incredible for her.
ObiWan paused at her query, flicking his wingtips thoughtfully. âThat⌠is a very good question, Rey,â he said. âThat depends. I donât really know what happened here after the Battle of Endor.âÂ
Truth be told, heâd been a bit distant from the mortal plane for a time after the Death Starâs destruction. Heâd withdrawn some, his primary duty with Luke completed and- well, in all honesty, heâd been happy to welcome Anakin back to the Light. Heâd missed his brother dearly. And then it had been occasional visits to Luke, until the Force drew him to Jakku and heâd spent the majority of time watching over his daughter and trying not to drift away into the ether. But he could make a few educated guesses.
âIt depends on how much activity there was after the battle,â he said. âImperial and Rebel forces would have been interested in combing the wreckage and making off with anything that might provide valuable information, and Imperial sympathizers may have wanted souvenirs, trying to make martyrs out of Palpatine and Vader. Imperial Intelligence probably wanted some for their propaganda efforts. But- the Death Star was the size of a small moon. It seems unlikely they could have hauled everything away.â He smiled wryly at his daughter. âI admit I donât know how much that would go for, youâre more of an expert in salvage efforts than I am. If you think we can make off with enough to keep us in funds, then we should make the attempt.â
Another flick of his wingtips. Heâd thought to acquire the necessary funds through other avenues, but if they could make enough money selling scrap to keep them operating, then he certainly wasnât going to protest the notion. âAlright. We look for the kyber crystals first. Then you identify whatâs best for us to take.â They werenât on a tight time schedule, after all. They could probably make off with a fair bit. Reyâd done enough salvaging from Imperial wreckage that she would certainly be able to identify what was the most valuable for its weight. âItâll be nice to have a financial cushion. We will need fuel, parts for the Falcon, funds to get ourselves some ident-chips, basic supplies⌠new clothes wouldnât hurt. Nor would real food.â Heâd like to get his hands on a couple of blasters. He desperately wanted a lightsaber to hand, but they did draw attention. Blasters would be less conspicuous.
And tea. Force, he wanted to lay in a supply of decent tea.
Should he get armor? He was accustomed to wearing it at need, and they were going into a potentially dangerous situation. If he were alone, heâd get himself some armor and pass himself off as a bounty hunter. Mandalorian, maybe, he still knew the language, and it wouldnât be the first time heâd pulled a stunt like that. People didnât harass Mandalorians.Â
He could almost hear Cody again, muttering about jetiise and their refusal to wear sensible gear into combat.
Hmm. Something to consider.
And if they were going to make some salvaging trips, maybe heâd get that chance to stretch his wings after all.Â
He half-closed his eyes, reaching out with his senses to try and see if he could find any signs of the kyber crystals they sought. The Force lay heavy and dark over this entire moon, feeling cold and slippery and more than a little fetid. But there was a sense, a little bright spark that beckoned to him. He smiled and rested a hand on Reyâs shoulder. âOpen yourself to the Force,â he murmured. âLike we practiced. You feel that little spark, about a kilometer northeast from here?â
Was it his imagination, or did he feel something else, something dark, shifting out there?
â§â- She all but beamed at her father. Of course, she knew that at least looking at what salvage might be lying about was a good idea. Sheâd managed to keep herself alive for most of her life by salvaging, after all, but the praise from a parent and even the agreement to go along with her planâŚ
Sue her, she was absolutely giddy to actually have a parent to pull that sort of reaction from. The last time she had a dynamic where anyone praised her or reassured her or validated her decisions was Asmund, and heâd been gone for such a long time. Rey hadnât been anything more than a little girl when the First Order took him away. Having that reassurance back⌠It was everything to her. Even more so than the incredible views of Endor and how breathtaking the non-desert was.
She still found herself a little awestruck while actually taking in their surroundings, though. It was easy to just stand there and get lost in the sight of something sheâd never experienced before. Jakku was always more of the same. There were some spots you needed to be mindful of because of sinking sand pits or wreckage that would draw a lot of attention from other scavengers, but otherwise, it was just miles upon miles of desert sand with hardly anything to break it up. This, though?
Force, the massive trees alone were enough to steal her breath away.
She found her fingers itching to reach for something to sketch with. Asmund left her a journal that belonged to her mother. Inside that journal were journal entries ranging from anything that had to do with their life prior to Obi-Wan, to ramblings about magic and how it worked, to random studies on subjects Rey couldnât even begin to understand. It was also filled with drawings and doodles, though, and Rey always responded most vividly to those. They allowed her to see into her motherâs world, and while she wasnât nearly the artist that Loki was, sheâd picked up the habit herself. Sheâd never agree, but sheâd actually grown quite good, too, and she so badly wanted to plop herself down and just⌠draw the foliage that stretched out in front of her.
Odd, considering she also wanted to go running through the trees, uncaring if Obi-Wan could keep up with her or not.Â
The hand on her shoulder brought her back from her mind racing out into this strange new moon, though, and she looked up at him. Sort of. He wasnât really⌠taller than her by more than an inch or two. âDo you really want to trust my abilities to find the crystals?â she asked. âIt seems safer if you do it, considering youâre both familiar with what weâre looking for and not so much of a mess that when you hear âreach out into the Force,â you immediately stick your hand out in front of you.â Obi-Wan wasnât going to let her live that down, but she wasnât going to let herself live that down either. How did she come from a powerful Force User and a person literally worshipped for their skills in sorcery?Â
Despite her self-doubt, she did as her father asked and closed her eyes so she could drop her guard and hopefully open herself up to the Force. The call of the crystals doesnât immediately make itself clear to her. Sheâs too overwhelmed by⌠She doesnât even know how to describe it, but it makes her sick to her stomach. Rot comes to mind, like something sour and corrupting taking root of such a beautiful place and spreading. On the surface, Endor was beautiful and alluring, but underneath, it was tainted. She supposed that made sense, given what they were searching for. Remains of the Death Star, a massive super weapon designed to destroy literal planets. So much evil lingered here and the shiver that ran up her spine made her question how much she wanted the ability to feel that.
A soft hum broke through all of the mucky haze, though, like a little comforting song that hushed the cries of a small child. She focused on that. Was that the song of the crystals they were looking for?Â
âYeah,â she finally murmured. âYeah, I feel it. Itâs one of the only positive things I feel in this place.â A little frown tugged at her lips. How could such beauty cover so much evil? âSo we should⌠head that way, then?â
He smiled in wry amusement- he wouldnât tease her too much about that little incident, only now and again, but it was funny to see that she was just as willing to bring it up herself.Â
âWe should,â he said. âTry not to let your mind linger too much on that darkness- it seems the Emperorâs death and the destruction of the Death Star stained this place more than I thought.â
He wished they could spend the time to cleanse this place, but- they had other tasks to attend to. They had to find Asmund. Asmund had been lost long enough, and they owed it to him to find and rescue him.Â
Nodding to Rey, he began making his way in the direction of the feel of the crystals, letting their song guide them through the forest. If one wasnât paying attention to the Force, it simply felt like a cool, heavily overgrown wild forest. He, however, was paying attention, keeping his senses alert for anything that might want to give them trouble.Â

And If My Shadow's All That Survives
rey & obi-wan ;; @soresuandsnarkâ
They did indeed have options, if this venture failed. He wouldnât say anything, but the idea of wielding a lightsaber that didnât have a kyber crystal at its heart just felt wrong to him.Â
Eh. Your bias is showing, Kenobi.
Bias it may be, but Jedi and lightsaber had to be in tune with one another in order to properly work. If he wasnât comfortable with the lightsaber he was usingâŚÂ
Worry about that later. Focus on the task at hand.Â
A pity he couldnât reclaim his old saber. But that had probably been on the first Death Star when Luke had destroyed it, unless Vader had had it on his person when he went to meet his son in combatâŚÂ
Force, your mind is wandering a lot today. Getting a bit senile in our old age, are we?
Maybe it was just that he was picking up on whatever was bothering Rey. There was something about this place that felt⌠wrong.Â
This was where Palpatine died. Could his taint yet linger?
It wasnât unheard of. Heâd read of powerful ancient Sith who lingered on in the places of their demise decades, even centuries after their deaths. Palpatine had been extremely powerful.Â
âYouâre right,â he said. âThereâs something off here, and we should not linger.â
If they encountered anything, theyâd probably be better off running than fighting. Despite what Yoda would say about a true Jedi needing no weapon or armor but the Force, ObiWan had always felt a great deal more comfortable meeting trouble with a lightsaber in hand. He was all the more reluctant to get into a scrap now because his daughter was in tow. His daughter, who was strong and capable of defending herself, but who had not, to this point, had to fight off anything more dangerous than a thug or backwater brawler. Not armed and armored soldiers, and not anything that might use the Force as a weapon.
Of course, if Palpatineâs spirit is still lingering around here, I am not so certain Iâd be able to fight it off myself. He clearly recalled how badly Palpatine had defeated Yoda, decades before, and he was nowhere near the former Grand Masterâs level.
No. It would be better for them to run from a fight if they could.Â
He gave her as reassuring a smile as he could and headed down the ramp, taking a good look around. Rey had brought them down near the remains of the construction facility and supply depot the Empire had built, and the forest had not entirely reclaimed the area yet. He spotted the grey duracrete wall of a fabricated Imperial building and headed for it.
Despite the urgency of their task, he couldnât help but enjoy the feeling of being somewhere that wasnât a desert or a cramped shipâs cabin. Endor was a beautiful moon, and he would love to be able to spend some time here and stretch his wings a little.Â
Sadly, self-indulgence would have to wait. They had crystals to find.
â§â- Before following her father off of the ship, she made sure to adjust the strap of her staff so it was secured around her shoulder, but could also be easily pulled off in case they did run into anything suspicious or potentially dangerous. Whatever she felt only seemed to amplify as she stepped off the ramp and set foot on the ground, as if direct contact with the moonâs surface only served to amplify that terror that lingered in the pit of her stomach.
It was a shame, really, because the moon was⌠like nothing sheâd ever seen. Literally. Her entire life had been consumed by the same miserable desert that didnât really ever seen any change. People came and went, sure, but more often than not, if they disappeared, it was likely due to death. She could still remember the countless times she sat down at the edge of the the water trough to scrub her scavenging finds clean, only to stare across at the same elderly woman who had been stuck there her whole life.
Rey always feared she might end up just like that woman and yet sheâd so stubbornly been unwilling to leave in hopes that her family would find her. Asmund promised that her mother would come back for her as soon as they could and Rey never lost faith in that.
Even now, she wondered what could have held them up for so long? So many years had passed and yet Rey still believed her old caregiver.Â
At least sheâd been partly right, though. She stayed on Jakku long enough for one of her family members to show up, sheâd just been expecting a mother rather than a father, especially since her father had appeared to her numerous times as a spirit. Which she later began to question if heâd even been real at allâŚ
Despite the sick feeling that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up on end, she couldnât help but stare at the terrain that stretched out in front of her. âI never imagined this much green could exist in the galaxyâŚâ she murmured and wow was it striking. She could really understand why green was her motherâs favorite color after just a moment of being on a planet like this. Or⌠moon like this, if you wanted to be technical.Â
The sights were almost enough to make the sick feeling go away.
âIf this is the moon that supplied the Death Star, how much of the Empireâs resources do you think are still here? I mean, I know weâre hoping for Kyber Crystalsââ Force, would those go for a lot of credits, but she decided not to mention that. All she could imagine was her father having a literal heart attack at his daughter suggesting such blasphemy. ââBut if thereâs resources here or even wreckage here from the Death Star? Do you have any idea how much scavenging some of that would go for? Weâd never have to worry about finances againâŚ
âNot that I want to stay here longer than necessary, but weâre going to need credits eventually. And probably sooner rather than later considering the price of fuel alone.â There were other ways to get the resources they needed, but they were morally questionable at best, though she did have to wonder how her father would react to even this suggestion.
âAt least you didnât say the thing about selling the Kyber CrystalsâŚâ she reassured herself, though the amount they could sell those for nearly had her in tears.
Reyâs awestruck expression made him smile. He should have thought about this- of course she wouldnât have seen so much greenery before. This must be incredible for her.
ObiWan paused at her query, flicking his wingtips thoughtfully. âThat... is a very good question, Rey,â he said. âThat depends. I donât really know what happened here after the Battle of Endor.âÂ

And If My Shadow's All That Survives
rey & obi-wan ;; @soresuandsnarkâ
Fortunately he had his back turned, otherwise he might have winced at Reyâs lack of refined manners. Something else to work on. Later. There were more important things than manners to fret about now.Â
âThe Force is a Jediâs guide,â he said. âIt does indeed do a lot of guiding. As for the crystals⌠yes. Youâre right, thereâs a chance none might be truly compatible with either of us. If that is the case, weâll need to do our best with whatâs available for now, and keep an eye out for more suitable crystals in future.â He made a face. âTruth be told, a saber can be made with any of a wide variety of gemstones. Itâs traditional for a Jedi to use a kyber crystal, though, because of that particular stoneâs connection with the Force and its ability to attune itself to a particular Jedi. It makes for the best lightsabers. But there are other stones we could use, if we can find ones of good enough quality. Corellian Jedi liked Durindfire stones, for instanceâŚâ He trailed off, shaking his head. It was probably too early for a history lecture. âIf we canât find kyber crystals, weâll have to find something else. That would present additional complications, but thatâs hardly anything new.â
â§â- Tradition, huh? Because kyber crystals made for the best sabers⌠It was such an odd thing to get hung up on, but Rey found it particularly odd to even care about preference when they were in a rather critical position where they werenât exactly in the right place to be picky or choosy. Perhaps it was just due to the way sheâd been raisedâor rather, raised herself? Rey had to make due with whatever she could get her hands on and make it work regardless of if it had real potential or not. She had a difficult time identifying with the idea of having the luxury to pick and choose and be finicky about⌠anything, really.
But it did seem rather pointless to attempt to point anything like that out now. At least Obi-Wan was open to other possibilities should their venture here turn up no real results. He had a preference, but that didnât mean he was unwilling to substitute in dire need. She actually wondered how long it would take before she started putting things into categories like that, when she was able to be picky over things rather than grateful for every last piece of junk she managed to get ahold of regardless of if it worked or not.Â
âAt least we have options if we donât find any kyber crystals here. Hopefully, this venture wonât be for nothingâŚâÂ
Once out of hyperspace, Rey maneuvered the ship towards their desired stop and carefully descended. Despite not really leaving the atmosphere of Jakku, Rey didnât struggle with the landing, though she might have come in a smidge too hard. It was fine, the ship certainly looked like it had taken a number of beatings.
The closer they came, though, the more a sense of dread settled in the pit of her stomach. Every nerve she had was telling her this was not a good idea and that they should leave, but why? What was the worst they could possibly come across? She wasnât certain, but she rarely went against her gut instincts.
âI donât like this place,â she murmured once they were safely able to leave the cockpit. âThereâs something⌠wrong with it. It doesnât feel right. We shouldnât linger here longer than we have to.â
They did indeed have options, if this venture failed. He wouldnât say anything, but the idea of wielding a lightsaber that didnât have a kyber crystal at its heart just felt wrong to him.Â

And If My Shadow's All That Survives
rey & obi-wan ;; @soresuandsnarkâ
He dished up the food heâd made. It was nothing exciting, just a basic porridge with some dried fruit added for sweetness, and tea- but it was certainly several steps up from what sheâd been eating on Jakku, and he thought she was finally getting enough to eat, which made him feel better.Â
Sitting down with a second cup of tea, he smiled ruefully. âI slept,â he assured her. Admittedly it hadnât been more than a few hours, but it was a few hours of actual sleep. Heâd managed on much less plenty of times before. He would have liked to meditate, but he was still too worried to do so. That feeling of nearly fading away into the Force had shaken him deeply, and he had no wish to repeat the experience. âAnd well enough, all things considered. As for how difficult itâs going to be to find kyber crystals⌠I donât know. We have Anakinâs directions, but who knows whoâs picked over the place since the Death Star was being built here. If there are kyber crystals here, and theyâre meant for us, weâll feel them. They call to a Jedi in the Force- itâs like hearing a song, almost. Youâll know it when you hear it.â
He thought he could pick up on the faintest twinge of something, the most distant snatch of music in his mind, but it was still so far away and impossible to hear clearly. He thought it might be one of the crystals they sought. If so, that was a good sign. They just had to get there and find it.
An alarm started beeping from the cockpit. âAh, weâre coming up on the coordinates,â he said, standing again. âEat up and meet me in the cockpit.â
â§â- Manners were something that Rey⌠admittedly needed to work on. She wasnât the sloppiest of eaters, but she wasnât terribly concerned with being polite about it either. After all, sheâd spent so many years by herself, who did she have to impress? Admittedly, she looked rather well put together for someone who wasnât trying, but that was more out of necessity for ease so she wasnât slowed down day in and day out than it was for her desire to be approachable or respectable.
In fact, she would have been better off not being either of those things on Jakku. If people left you alone, you werenât getting into trouble.
âSo if there are crystals here, the Force will guide us to them? The Force seems to do a lot of thatâŚâ Did Force Users just rely on the Force leading them to everything important? That was ridiculous, of course, and her father had already mentioned the importance of not solely relying on her abilities. She needed to be as capable without them as she was with them, but some of the explanations of what they were doing and why, or where they could get things and how seemed to resort back to a lot of âthe Force thisâŚâ and âthe Force thatâ.
The Force worked in mysterious waysâŚ
Which, to Rey, just sounded like what someone said when they didnât have a real answer. As much as she believed in this powerâshe had to, it literally coursed through her veins ( sort of )âit also sounded like a lot of mumbo jumbo to her. Hopefully, she would sort that out soon and start feeling more at peace with simply accepting the Force the way it was, butâŚ
âSo even if there are crystals here, we may not be able to use them? If they donât⌠chose to play us a song? If a crystal doesnât pick us, does that mean itâs completely unusable? That canât be true. The Empire used them by the masses, right?â Her onslaught of questionsâshe really didnât notice she was asking so many, she truly didnâtâcame to a halt with the alarm alerting them to their approach.Â
Nodding as he father stood to head towards the cockpit, she made quick work of the rest of her breakfast and followed suit after him. She might have wiped her mouth on her wrist rather than properly with a napkin or the like, but⌠Obi-Wanâs back was to her anyway. He definitely wouldnât have seen it.
Fortunately he had his back turned, otherwise he might have winced at Reyâs lack of refined manners. Something else to work on. Later. There were more important things than manners to fret about now.Â
âThe Force is a Jediâs guide,â he said. âIt does indeed do a lot of guiding. As for the crystals... yes. Youâre right, thereâs a chance none might be truly compatible with either of us. Itâs traditional for a Jedi to use a kyber crystal, though, because of that particular stoneâs connection with the Force and its ability to attune itself to a particular Jedi. It makes for the best lightsabers. But there are other stones we could use, if we can find ones of good enough quality. Corellian Jedi liked Durindfire stones, for instance...â He trailed off, shaking his head. It was probably too early for a history lecture. âIf we canât find kyber crystals, weâll have to find something else. That would present additional complications, but thatâs hardly anything new.â
its kind of disappointing how everyone turns rey into some soft, clean aesthetic queen with glitter and pale pink fabrics when in canon rey is a greasy girl iconÂ
fanon rey: soft, smells like roses, always wearing glitter, no bad angles, pale smooth fabric queen canon rey: doesnt know what a hairbrush or makeup is, steals fries off your plate, will fight you in a parking lot Â
If I hung out with Rey we would have fart contests
that is the best addition to any post, sw-related or not
please consider that poe thinks hygiene is wiping down with the least greasy rag and rey just kind of scrubs off with some sand when she gets too crusty and finn is used to an absolutely scrupulous twice-daily hygiene regimen with water and sonic and specially formulated deodorants because you donât want Army Stonk building up in a spaceship, or, god forbid, your armor. so he like, he loves poe and rey to death. he loves them. but he just watched poe try to explain the Sniff Test to rey, unsuccessfully, and he is kind of screaming internally now.
both rey and poe are in awe of how soft and sweet-smelling finn is and heâs like âlisten itâs an ancient stormtrooper secret called WASH YOUR SOCKS WITH SOAP.â
Rey⌠also some Daisy Ridley smiles :)

And If My Shadow's All That Survives
rey & obi-wan ;; @soresuandsnarkâ
He couldnât help but smile at the sight of Rey, tousled and sleepy and unwilling to crawl out from her nest. Force⌠she looked heartbreakingly like her mother, rubbing the sleep from her eyes with her hair standing wildly on end. Lokiâs hair had had a similar long-standing Disagreement with pillows. The sorcerer had always been forced to either spend a considerable amount of time taming it by hand or resorting to magic to get it under control once more.Â
Force, how he missed Loki. Perhaps once they found and freed Asmund, the healer would be able to help them figure out how to get back to him.Â
And even after everything Loki had said about the people on Asgard, he was still rather curious to see the place for himself.Â
âWe are,â he said fondly. âYou should have just enough time to eat breakfast before we revert to realspace. Then itâs just a quick jaunt over to the moon itself.âÂ
â§â- The promise of breakfast did have her perking up just a bit. Poor girl never truly processed just how hungry she always was until she actually had an appropriate number of meals at the ready. Sheâd grown used to the eating once-a-day routine that usually left her desperately licking any and all remnants from the plate before finally abandoning it. Being able to eat multiple times and not still have a hollow feeling sitting in the pit of her stomach was nothing short of blessing, though it shocked her at just how much sheâd been able to ignore the unhealthy state she lived in for years.
And she actually got to eat different things every meal rather than the exact same bland, flavorless thing every single day!
âBreakfast? Mkay, Iâm up,â she mumbled, finally dropping her hands from her eyes. Well, rather than drop them, she moved them to smooth back her hair. Unlike Lokiâs, hers listened a bit better. Willing to stick up at odd angles, but just as easily convinced to shift back into place. It still poofed and had a general look of unkempt to it, but after brushing or combing it and pulling it back into the three bun style she was so fond of, it would be fine. Food first, though.
âHow did you sleep?â she asked, though she did shoot her father a suspicious glance as she finally climbed out of the bed, leaving the warmth of her bed behind. âYou did sleep, didnât you?â She remembered multiple passages in her motherâs journal, often complaining about how Obi-Wan failed to take care of himself. Apparently he could be really bad about sleeping or even eating properly, which drove her mother up a wall. Loki fretted a lot, from what she could tell, and they always had someone to focus their doting attention on. Obi-Wan happened to be that person over the course of their relationship. Funny, since it seemed like they first met because her father took Loki in to care for them in a rather rundown state.
Passing by him, she left her bunk and headed in the direction of the kitchen, expecting that he would follow behind her. âHow difficult do you think itâs going to be to find what weâre looking for there?â she asked. âIf we even find it at allâŚâ
As for how difficult itâs going to be to find kyber crystals... I donât know.
