Sonoran Pride Alliance

Statement from the Sonoran Pride Alliance Team:

Due to a lack of resources, and after announcements from other local organizations for their own events, we have come to the painful conclusion to suspend the SPA project for the time being. Our 501(c) application has been withdrawn, and the Sonoran Pride Alliance will be going on hiatus for the 6-12 months or so as we pivot to more sustainable objectives and restructure our goals. Ultimately, we still wish to connect our Tucson and Southern Arizona Queer and LGBTQ+ communities for the benefit of all Southern Arizona Queers, and as a way to find and share local events and meet each other. We have such a diverse, bright, and expansive community in our little part of the world, and we all deserve to be able to find each other, support each other, and help each other access the resources we all need.

Although we are deeply disappointed that our big dreams and goals will not be realized as soon as we wished, we still are commited to and have so much love for our community! Please watch what Fluxx Productions are up to for local celebrations and support groups, check out Celestia Collective for a queer third-space (and great coffee and tea!), follow Tucson Love Letter for weekly updates on local events, and suggest your favorite local queer/LGBTQ+ and/or queer/LGBTQ+-friendly businesses and organizations in the comments below. Don't forget to support our local libraries, local artists, and keep voting and advocating for transgender, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ rights in local government too!

Our dream is to have an online space to support the unifying goal of the Sonoran Pride Alliance, and although he will be focusing on other projects in the duration of this hiatus, it and SPA are not abandoning our community! Sonoran Pride Alliance is looking for a translator to work with our social media team, so that we can include as many people as possible to fulfill our goals of supporting and growing our local Tucson and Southern AZ communities!

Huey Percy Newton was born in Monroe, Louisana. Newton was co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. He was assassinated at age 47 by a local narcotics prison gang member trying to move up the ranks. Newton is renowned for his major role in the Party's advocating for political goals-including better housing, jobs, and education for African-Americans. Under Newton's leadership, the Black Panther Party founded over 60 community support programs including food banks, medical clinics, sickle cell anemia testing, prison busing for families of inmates, legal advice seminars, clothing banks, housing cooperatives, and their own ambulance service.
