I feel really I don’t know disappointed by the lack of love for Chita Rivera? She has had a career spanning 60 years and is still active. She’s the only latinx person ever given a Kennedy Center Honor until this year. You know I think she was in a lot of musicals that never reached massive popularity other than West Side Story and Chicago. People forget she was in those shows too. I’m not going to say she’s not an unusual woman, because she’s got a voice, and dancing skills that are really unique. She isn’t a pretty little soprano that sounds light, she’s got this deepness to her voice that makes her so incredibly unique. She’s not really conventionally attractive either, so I think that’s part of it, she’s no Patti LuPone who people still say she’s attractive (and she is). However Chita helped define musical theatre of the 20th century, she and Carol Channing are the only greats left of the Golden Age. She shares the spot of the person who’s been nominated for the most Tonys. I’d really like her legacy to be more important than that one line in In the Heights. We need to honor her especially because people erase the contributions of non-white actors. She should not be forgotten.
