I keep thinking about thisā¦remember how Tommy said: āIn France, i got used to seeing men die. Never got used to seeing horses die. They die badlyā and then when that finally gets to him he says: āIām a horseā
Teens/20s boys will often make the mistake of trying to fight their dad. Thinking āIām young and spry and heās past his prime.ā They always fail to account for old man strength. In Dukeās case itās a doubly bad idea because his dad is crazy.
Duke: āI wonāt kill my own kinā
Tommy: [Shoving his face in the mud] āI will.ā
It was two oāclock in the afternoon when he knocked on the door. You remembered, because the clock struck twice, literally the moment his knuckles hit the wood. And you were thinking to yourself: donāt be that punctual!
John had been the one to let him in, amusement written all over his face. You never knew why, but it was like that brother of yours could smell trouble from a mile away. He wasnāt the brightest, and often didnāt know what the plan was, although he happily went along with it, but he always knew when something was about to go ābangā. Maybe it was just his love for bombs.
Either way, John had let him in and Arthur had started pouring the drinks straight away. Not a great start. Tommy was still working, so the four of you were now sitting in the little front room at Watery Lane. And you could cut the tension with a knife.
āWhat was your name again?ā Arthur asked the boy.
āYou know his name,ā you sighed. āHeās been a friend of Finnās since they were six years old.ā
āI forget.ā
Said boy cleared his throat to answer, but before he actually could, Arthur interrupted him, āNever mind, I wonāt remember it anyway.ā
Strike one.
Thank God Tommy finally came in. He stood in the doorway and looked around the room, eyes lingering on you for a second, and then staring down the boy who had dared to knock on his front door. āWell?ā he finally said.
āTom, this isā¦ā
Thomas pointed a finger to silence you and softly, menacingly, said, āYou will not be speaking, Y/N, at all. I want to hear it all from him.ā
You sat back down quietly. Tommy lit a slow cigarette. The room had turned to ice.
āSpeak, boy.ā
For a second, the boy made eye contact with you. Immediately, Tommy held up a hand in warning, and he got it. So, he bravely looked your brother in the eye instead and said, āMy name is Jeremiah Roth, Mr. Shelby. Iām a friend of your sister.ā
āAre you nowā¦ā
āI thought he was Finnās friend.ā Arthur grumbled.
John gestured around vaguely, āMaybe he has lots of friends, Arthur.ā
āNot in here he doesnātā¦ā
āI do!ā Jeremiah interjected, even though youād tried your best to warn him with your eyes.
Tommy raised his eyebrows and nodded, āThere, you see? He has lots of friends. Heās friendly, right, Jeremiah? Youāre friendly?ā
Less certain now, he answered, āI think I amā¦ā
āSo friendly even, that you decided to come to our house and interrupt us during our work.ā
āI donāt mean to interrupt anythingā¦ā behind your brotherās back you had started gesturing wildly for him to move the fuck along and get to the point, because you knew exactly what was going to happen if he didnāt.
Tommy sighed theatrically, āYet here you are.ā
āIāll get to the point,ā Jeremiah said. You gave him a double thumbs up and an encouraging smile, āIāve known Y/N for almost 10 years now and I like her very much. I think she likes me too.ā
Within seconds, Arthur was up and John just about managed to stop him from lifting the boy clean out of his shoes.
āSettle down, brother,ā Tommy said, seemingly unmoved. But you recognized how his eyes had slightly darkened. āLetās hear what he has to say.ā Ā
Jeremiah opened his mouth again, but before he could say anything, a fourth brother entered the room. Finnās eyes lit up in surprise when he saw his friend, āWhat are you doing here, Jem?ā
āHe wants to marry Y/N,ā John blurted out. You let your head fall into your hands, waiting for the explosion to happen.
For a moment, nothing happened at all. Arthur had turned a slightly darker shade of purple, but all was quiet. āWhat?ā John asked no one in particular, āIām just saying it. We all know itā¦ā
And then it kicked off. Finn lunged forwards and punched his friend in the face. Jeremiah fell back and took one of the little tables with him. John tried to stop Finn, but he clearly wasnāt making much of an effort. Arthur, meanwhile, grabbed hold of a book and flung it at the boyās head. Then he went at him with the bottle, but luckily tommy took that from his hands. It was a chaos of fighting cats, with only you and Tommy standing to the side, looking at it.
āSo, how would you say this is going, Y/N? Eh?ā
āNot great.ā
Tommy nodded and lit yet another cigarette. Then he sent you a quick strict look and said, āDonāt think I donāt know this was your idea.ā
You gulped and decided not to reply. Because of course this was your idea. You liked Jeremiah, you may even loved him, you werenāt entirely sure, but he wasnāt the bravest man in Small Heath. Which was fine with you, because if you wanted brave, loud, violent or bold men, you had many to choose from. No, you liked Jeremiah because of his kindness, his clumsiness, his nervousness around big groups of people, and his wordless affection for you.
Suddenly, your thoughts were interrupted by a loud noise of Tommy banging his fist down onto the table and shouting out, āEnough!ā
John immediately grabbed Finn by the collar and threw him out of the room, saying, āThanks for coming, Finn. Well done. Now let the grown-ups handle this.ā Finn tried to shout out something threatening to his friend about sneaking around with his sister, but John quickly closed the door, so his words faded away.
Tommy sat down again and waited for his brothers to do the same, āLetās start this again, eh?ā
āThank you, Mr. Shelby,ā Jeremiah said, as he tried to dab away some of the blood off his chin, āAs I was saying, I like your sister.ā
Frantically, you tried to get him to look at you. You waved your arms about and when he did finally look, you mouthed the word respect at him a few times.
He finally got it, nodded a little too obvious and added, āAnd of course I respect you all.ā
You shook your head. This wasnāt going to be easy. Again, you mouthed the right words and pointed feverishly at yourself: respect ME!
āAh! Yes,ā he nodded again, āAnd of course I respect me most of all.ā
You slumped down in your chair. Half a smile started forming on Johnās face, as he looked from you to him. Ā
Again, you tried, as clearly as you could and without John noticing. It became a strange dance almost, with a lot of stopping and starting again. Pointing from him to yourself, to the brothers, and to your ring finger.
Tommy narrowed his eyes, Arthur downed another glass and John almost giggled.
āWhat I mean to say⦠is that I respect Y/N. A lot.ā
Finally.
āWhich is why Iām here.ā
You started gesturing again, referring to the next bit you had told him to say. But suddenly John spun around and caught you mid-mime. He barked a laugh, āHave you two been rehearsing this? Because, fucking hell Y/N, shouldāve spend a bit more time on this one.ā
āNo, I havenāt,ā you tried feebly.
āYou respect her.ā Tommy waved a hand, āIām so very glad to hear it.ā His patience was running out.
āAnd you want to marry her.ā Arthur started, obviously trying with every inch of his might to sound calm and reasonable, āYou want to marry our sixteen-year-old sister.ā His patience had run out a long time ago.
āYes, well it doesnāt have to be right away,ā Jeremiah offered. And you slammed a hand against your forehead to show him: wrong move! So, he added, āI mean, weāre both still young.ā
āMr. Roth,ā Thomas interrupted him, and he leaned forwards and waved his cigarette around as he spoke, āIāll be frank with you, alright? Iām sure youāre a lovely boy, but that is all you are: a boy. And the only reason I wonāt shoot you right here and now, is because I think youāre just a fucking idiot. Iāll forgive you for that. Iām also going to assume my sister put you up to this. Iāll deal with her later. But I will tell you this: she is far too young to get married yet. She will be ready, when I say sheās ready, alright?ā
āWe havenāt even thought about a dowry for her yet,ā John added, unhelpfully.
And you couldnāt help yourself, āWhat would I be worth then, John?ā
āY/Nā¦ā Tommy warned.
You sat up, āNo, I want to know! A horse?ā
āYouāre worth more than one horse,ā Arthur weighed in on the conversation, āYouāre a bloody Shelby.ā
āThree horses?ā
John shrugged, āI donāt know, I havenātā¦ā
āWhat about a car?ā Jeremiah asked, smiling brightly. He never was too good and gauging the mood and taking social cues.
āA car is a lot, Jeremiah,ā you laughed.
He smiled back at you, and innocently added, āWell, Iām not really sure how these things work, Y/N. Maybe for a virgin?ā
And thatās when Tommy lost it too. He jumped up, with his other brothers hot on his heel, grabbed the much-confused boy and in one swift motion, practically hoisted him up into the air.
āWait!ā you shouted out, āTom, wait. Please. I know heās an idiot, but I swear itās just that. He doesnāt mean any harm!ā
āAnd you want to marry this idiot?ā John asked, chewing on his toothpick, obviously, but calmly, contemplating homicide.
You looked at Tommy, who hardly seemed to move at all. Somehow, that was even scarier.
āWhy our sister?ā Tommy grumbled lowly.
āI thought it would be good for her too,ā Jeremiah tried, āWith her reputation and all.ā
Arthur actually sounded like an animal, āWhat fucking reputation?ā
āBecause sheās a Shelby?ā
You couldnāt wait any longer. He was going to get himself killed, āJeremiah, shut the fuck up. Please. Whatever you think might be a good idea to say, do no say that! Youāre making it worse.ā
John looked at him. He didnāt think it was funny anymore, āYouāre calling my sister wild?ā
Jeremiah just hung there, suspended in the air. Ā His voice had gotten very thin, āI donāt mean sheās wild wild. I mean sheās friendly, you know?ā
āOh, friendly again, is it.ā And that was it. With one swift motion, Thomas threw Jeremiah out the front door and closed it again.
āWeddingās off, Y/N,ā Arthur said, almost cheerful.
You sat back down and sighed. None of this had gone according to plan. Maybe you could try again in a couple of years, together, when youād prepped him better.
āWhy would you want to marry him?ā John asked again, genuinely interested. āYou could have anyone. Why him?ā
āI like him.ā
Tommy ran a hand through his hair and simply said, āWell, luckily for him, so do I. But youāre not marrying anyone for now and thatās final. Alright?ā
You nodded. Somehow, this still felt like a victory, even though your brothers seemed exhausted after the encounter. Like it had taken years off their lives. So, you decided to ease their discomfort a little, āYou donāt have to worry, Tommy.ā
āWorry about what, eh?ā He took a long drag.
You shrugged, āI mean⦠Iām not that friendlyā¦ā
John snickered in the background, but Tommy frowned, āWhat?ā
āIām still a virgin.ā
Arthur had just downed his whiskey and, unfortunately, choked.
Imagine you're Duke Shelby. Your father has lived isolated out in the country for the last several years because he is clinically insane and believes he is dangerous. You haven't seen him in years. Everyone is constantly reminding you though that you are tiny and small compared to what he was and what he was capable of and you can never fill his shoes you can never reach the heights he reached or lead people the way he did or win the way he did or even scare people the way he did. You get involved in some shit you know would piss him off because whatever he's out in the country being crazy. You're walking into an empty warehouse and suddenly your insane dad who's supposed to be in the country busts down the door behind you and he's got a gun in his hand already and you know immediately that he is there to beat your ass or maybe even kill you. You take 0.01 seconds to process this and bolt for the door.

Knight really wanted Tommy as his male power fantasy thatās why every woman must be written to want to have sex with him and itās comical because thatās already absurd no matter what but itās more unrealistic because he gave that man negative rizz in 90% of his interactions with women.
He really saw pretty Grace in her cute little barmaid outfit and decided to say āAre you a whoreā. The only reason he got a chance after that is she was literally there to spy on him.
"i heard the blackbird sing" is such a top tier Arthur moment. And it's also so fun to think about juxtaposed with Arthur and John's earlier rage at Tommy for delegating all the violence to them. They're pissed out of their minds at him for treating them like his personal killers while keeping his own hands clean, then they get Tommy in that room with Changretta, and suddenly Tommy is doing the violence instead of delegating it and John and Arthur are VERY alarmed by what they are seeing.
Like they already knew Tommy wasn't thinking clearly and hasn't been for days, but he's planning to torture someone all night long with his own hands (but also crouching on the ground giving himself a pep talk about it) and Arthur's just like "Hm. Actually I think I will be the one who does all the violence from now on without complaining. Because this fucker is too crazy."

Tommy and Grace meeting up for sex in season 2 is so fucking funny because they do love each other yeah but also Tommy did choose the spot theyād meet specifically so he could call Campbell on the phone and gloat at him about how he was about to fuck Grace and youāre like damn okay Tommy thatās a little messy. Then Grace is like āhold my beerā and all but says after she fucks him that she did kinda come there also to use him as a sperm donor so she and her nice rich husband could have a baby⦠that happens to look like the man she actually loves.
In a season where May Carlton wanted to fuck Tommy but also wanted his horse (aptly names Gracesās Secret) for breeding stock. Okay.
AO3 does not live in āthe cloudā because that is other peopleās computers, and other peopleās computers are vulnerable to censorship.
AO3 is on its own computers. It does still have to be housed somewhere, and I suppose a determined enough hater could try to find that place and go after it, but itās a lot harder than sending spurious complaints to Amazon or whomever going āBadWrong things are hosted on your cloud service!ā
When people involved with AO3 talk about āthe cost of serversā they donāt mean āthe cost to pay Amazon for space on their servers.ā They mean, like, the cost to physically own them, and eventually replace them with new ones. And the operating costs to run them.
AO3 is not āin the cloud.ā AO3 is stored on physical machines that the OTW owns.
While this is not a solution that can work for everyone who wants to deal with controversial content, it is why AO3ple sneer at alt-righters who complain about getting thrown off hosting platforms.
BecauseĀ I want us to own the goddamned servers, ok? Because I want a place where we canāt beĀ TOSedĀ and where no one can turn the lights off or try to dictate to us what kind of stories we can tell each other.
Please note that buying new servers and storage just became a shit load more expensive.
Because AI.
To paraphrase a comment on a Gamers Nexus video, the reason computer parts are getting so expensive is that a huge amount of RAM and storage that have not been produced yet were purchased with non-existent money to put in gpus and computers that have also not yet been produced to put in data centers that have not yet been built, to be powered by infrastructure that may never appear, to satisfy demand that does not actually exist, to obtain profit that is mathematically impossible.
So thatās fun. But it means that already owning computers that actually do the thing is SO MUCH BETTER than hiring other people to build more capacity to buy more computers to do the thing.
How bad is the RAM crisis? The price of ddr3, which is like 10-15yo tech, is going up. The price of DDR5 is now stupid expensive, 4+ times as expensive as it was a few months ago.
Mostly because thereās only one company in the world that is capable of generating the kind of chips needed and everyone uses that company because the modern world is a very precarious house of cards held together by tissue and string and we have a 50 foot toddler playing Godzilla with international trade.
Anyway AO3 is a goddamn miracle people need to respect.
I think this is especially worth pointing out now because if they start fundraising more then this is most probably why they need money. If anyoneās mad that AO3 needs extra dollars then, remember to blame AI.
