Authorâs Note: what do you guys think? should i keep going? Also, I am embarrassingly in love with this man, please, send help.
The desk looks way too empty, except for the old computer and a couple of papers with info about the newest super ex-villains you'll have to deal with. In the cubicle next door, some guy grabs your attention by taking this deep, dramatic breath while rubbing his face â frustrated? exhausted? honestly, could be either.
You sit down and try to turn on the computer, but the power button is completely missing.
âFound it,â you mumble to yourself, but before you can even type the full password, this tall, blonde, ridiculously gorgeous woman shows up beside you.
âSettling in?â she asks.
âGuess so, not like I have much to settle,â you say, making the tragic emptiness of your desk very obvious.
âOh, donât worry about that. Youâve got plenty of time to decorate however you want.â
She puts a gentle hand on your shoulder, then gestures toward the guy who was just having his mini-meltdown.
âThatâs Robert, your new mentor.â
He turns around and â despite the beat-up vibe, the scars, the eye bags, the messy hair â your heart does a full gymnastics routine. Calling Robert ugly would basically be a crime.
âAnd Iâm Blonde Blazer, kind of the do-everything girl around here. Robertâs gonna help you figure out how things work at SDN, introduce you to your team, show you around⊠If you need anything, heâs your guy.â
She gives you both this encouraging smile and heads off to whatever heroic task sheâs got next.
Even tired, the smile Robert gives you is so sweet it makes your whole body warm up under his gaze.
âNice to meet you. Y/N?â
âThatâs me,â you say. âHowâd you know?â
He points to the little post-it stuck next to your monitor with your name and login.
âWell, now that weâre properly introduced, we can start with the basics, yeah?â
You nod, trying very hard to ignore the sudden heat and the dumb flutter in your chest when Robert gets up and casually leans against the wall behind you, arms crossed. His appearance isnât extraordinary or anything. Heâs hot, sure, but not the type to turn heads. Somehow he still makes you feel⊠different. Maybe itâs the way he carries himself? Or maybe itâs that deep voice of his, the kind that reverberates through your body like itâs slipping straight into your bloodstream? Itâs hard to tell, but thereâs something about him thatâs impossibly captivating.
The afternoon goes by faster than you expected. Between explanations, files, funny stories about Robert's time in the company, and the ridiculous amount of coffee you both end up drinking, you lose track of time completely. At some point, your brain starts buzzing. Too many new things, too many screens⊠Itâs hard to process everything at once. Insecurity starts creeping in. Are you really ready for the job? Shouldnât you have just stayed in your old life as a wannabe hero?
That familiar weight starts forming in your stomach, but you try to push the thought away. Robert notices. Of course he does. His eyes catch yours with this quiet understanding, like he can read you without a single word being said.
âBreak?â he suggests.
Before you can say anything, youâre already following him to the breakroom.
âI think I got everything,â you say while the two of you are sitting at the breakroom table.
Robert takes a bit to answer because heâs busy stuffing his mouth with Twinkies.
âItâs easier than it looks, honestly. The tricky part is them,â he says, nodding toward a few people talking loudly in the company kitchen. You start to relax for the first time all day. Maybe â just maybe â you wonât blow anything up tomorrow.
A woman with bright red skin and full-on demonic vibes walks over, puts Robert in a playful headlock, and almost knocks him off his chair.
At the same time, another woman with short hair tinted somewhere between purple and black walks up laughing and messing with Robert. âFor someone who acts like a total bitch, we actually missed you this afternoon. Chase was being a pain in the ass, as usual.â
Robert lets out this soft laugh, still trapped in the demon girlâs arms. âIt was for a good cause. Iâm training the new dispatcher,â he says, pointing straight at you.
Both of them look you over, but the demon woman is the first to smile.
You smile back. âY/N.â
âAnd this is Invisigal,â Robert adds, nodding toward the purple-haired menace, who doesnât look as nice as MalĂ©vola at all. She stands there with her arms crossed, eyes sharp, studying you in silence. Probably deciding whether she can trust you or not.
âYou donât have to be scared, I donât bite,â you say, looking at her. She lets out a short snort of a laugh, followed by an almost disappointed expression.
âWell, shit. What a shame. I love when they bite.â
âAnd thatâs Visi for you,â MalĂ©vola adds, rolling her eyes.
âYou two are on Robertâs team?â you ask. They nod.
âHeâs a little shit, but gets the job done,â Invisigal says. âSDN somehow managed to shove a bunch of idiots together and Robert miraculously made it work. Not even Blonde Blazer thought that was gonna pan out.â
âThanks for the support,â Robert mutters, coffee cup hovering near his mouth.
âI was complimenting you, dumbass.â Visi looks back at you again âWhat about you, girl? Whatâs your superpower?â
That question hits you right where it hurts. You shift uncomfortably. You hate answering that. Hate talking about it after all the failures, after every single person you tried to help and couldnât. You feel useless every time.
âItâs called, hmâŠâ you clear your throat. âItâs echo sense. I hear what people mean, not what they say. Emotions, intentions⊠the stuff between the lines. People canât lie to me, thatâs basically itâ.
âSo youâre a walking lie detector? Shit, thatâs pretty cool,â MalĂ©vola says.
âYeah. Itâs⊠fun,â you say, even though thereâs more you could add.
It would be better if i could actually do something with it. Something real. Something that actually matters. Save a life, or whatever. But all i ever do is figure out when someoneâs being an asshole right to my face.
Robert looks at you, and itâs impossible to tell whatâs going through his head. His gaze is piercing, his lips slightly parted, his breathing steady. Visi nods once after your answer, but doesnât say a word, and the silence between all of you starts to weigh a few tons.
On the other hand, the room is noisy, warm, alive. Like years of chaos and partnership have sunk into the walls.
With a sigh, Robert puts both hand on the table and stands up âWell, breakâs over. Câmon, weâre doing one more simulation now, something new they added to the training.â
You get up to follow him, but still catch Malévola and Invisigal whispering as you walk away.
âSheâs kinda weird, huh?â
âI didnât notice. Was too busy watching Robert literally eye-fuck that girl. Iâm kinda jealous. God⊠he needs to get laid soon or heâs gonna jump on the first person he sees.â
âFor the love ofâ you never think about anything else, Visi.â
The rest of the afternoon passes in a blur of screens, repeated simulations, and Robertâs calm voice saying âone more time, itâs okâ whenever something goes wrong. Once things finally calm down, the building is quieter, the sky outside starting to change colors.
By the end of the day, youâre dead tired. Your back hurts, your head hurts, and every muscle in your body is basically filing a complaint. Robert looks just as wiped out, stretching his arms over his head with a groan.
âSo? Whatâd you think? Am I a good mentor?â he asks, teasing.
You let out this weak little laugh. âHmm⊠I dunno. I think you could improve a lot. Youâre kinda boringâŠâ you joke. Heâs sitting on a small chair right beside you, and as youâre about to bump your shoulder into his while speaking, you realize the two of you are much closer than you thought. Close enough that his warmth reaches you without even touching. Robert has this small, gentle smile on his face â something almost tender. Suddenly, his lap looks like the most comfortable place in the world, and you feel this strange urge to lie down on him and just rest.
And even though youâve been pretending all day not to notice it, the second his eyes meet yours, thereâs a softness there â calm, warm⊠but also intense enough to make your skin tingle.
âTrust me, you wouldnât want Chase in my place,â he says, looking away from you, grabbing his stuff off the table and powering down the computer. âHeâs pissed about this new training system SDN put in. Thinks itâs a waste of time. None of us ever had to do this before we started. Usually we just show up and⊠do the whole thing, yâknow?â
âIs Chase really that bad? First Invisigal, now you⊠Iâm starting to get worried.â
âNo, not at all. Heâs actually a really good guy, just grumpy as hell. Old age, I guess.â Robert shrugs. âBut heâs got a good heart.â
He swings his bag over his shoulder and gives you this look â checking in, but subtle.
âHowâre you feeling?â
âHonestly? Scared. What if Iâm not good at this? What if the villains try to, I donât know, beat me up?â you say, only half joking.
Robert immediately lets out this loud laugh, the kind that only someone whoâs been there would have.
âNothing you canât handle, trust me. And relax, from what I saw in training, youâre more than ready to start. Like I said, none of us did any of this before working here. Youâre ahead already. And if you need anything, remember what Blonde Blazer told you.â He taps the divider between the cubicles. âIâm right next door.â
âThanks, but just so you know⊠If anything goes wrong, Iâm blaming you.â
Robert opens his mouth to respond, but stops when quick footsteps echo in the hallway.
âWhat the fuck are you assholes still doing here at this hour? You got nothing better to fucking do?â
âGreat way to start, Chase,â Robert grumbles, turning toward the shorter guy with white hair. âThis is the new dispatcher, Y/N.â
âSo youâre the one who dragged Robert away from the fucking work all afternoon and made me babysit his fucking team? Jesus, theyâre a nightmare. No idea how you deal with them. Fun people, sure, canât deny that, but still, fuck.â He talks so fast itâs almost hard to keep up. âKid, tell me, do you think this fucking new training helped with anything?â
âI donât know if the training is working, or if sheâs just very good at what she does.,â Robert says, sending you a little wink. âBut weâll find out for real tomorrow. First official day, right?â
âYeah⊠Iâm kinda nervous. Scared theyâre gonna kill me,â you admit. âIâm not joking. What if I piss someone off?â
âWeâve got security all over this fucking building, no oneâs gonna lay a hand on you. And I trust Robert. If he says youâre doing fine, then youâre good to go, kid,â Chase says. âNow get the hell outta here already, or tomorrow youâre gonna screw something up just from being tired.â
âYouâre right.â Robert gets up and starts walking with Chase, but before they head out, he turns back to you. âRookie, wanna grab something to eat? Celebrate your unofficial first day?â
âWouldnât it make more sense to celebrate the official one tomorrow?â
âNobody said we canât do both.â He grins, adjusting his backpack. âCome on, letâs eat something. Thereâs a really good place nearby.â
âIs Chase coming too?â you ask, throwing your bag over your shoulder.
âMe? Fuck no. Iâm dead. I need to go home and sleep,â he says, already walking to the elevator, leaving the two of you behind. âGood night, dipshits.â
âSo itâs just us?â Your voice comes out a little quiet, a little shy. Itâs only the first day, no big deal. Just a harmless dinner with your mentor and coworker who is definitely not stupidly attractive and hasnât been giving you those weirdly intense looks all day.
Oh lord... Itâs been a while since you went out with anyone.
âJust us,â Robert says, dragging you out of your head with that voice that hits you right in the chest â and everywhere else. âYou coming?â
âYeah. Iâm coming.â
The two of you step into the elevator, and the second the doors close, the silence shifts. Thick, charged. Robert turns his head just enough to look at you, slow and deliberate, like heâs trying to peel your thoughts right out of your skull.
Your eyes flick up anyway.
Heâs still watching you.
Your shoulders brush, even though thereâs plenty of room, but he doesnât move away. Neither do you. His cologne hits you hard, and it makes your stomach twist in that stupid, traitorous way your body has. Heat crawls up your neck, your ears, your cheeks.
Heâs just a coworker you met today.
