The timing for making Kushina the jinchuriki is weird. Naruto-world timeline is weird and doesn't make sense anyways but it's weird to decide to put your WMD in a kid when you have THEE Uzumaki sealing master OG jinchuriki ready to go during (in the middle of?) the Second War. Being old isn't a problem, i mean look at Oonoki. And Mito was an Uzumaki (lots of life force or whatever).
So why? Mito got a disease or illness?
Her granddaughter is the greatest medic-nin to ever live that doesn't make sense either.
So I propose:
Nawaki being the reason.
His death being the reason. Hiruzen's handling of that war, the way he was fucking up. Maybe Uzushio's fall wasn't sudden and she saw that coming, saw Konoha under Hiruzen wouldn't help. Saw the Senju clan whittle down to only her own grandchildren, saw the discontent brewing and being made worse with the Uchiha. And then Nawaki dies, and she might make her discontent known.

Losing a grandchild, a grandson of the God of Shinobi himself, and Hiruzen continues to Fuck It Up. Having kept her granddaughter under his wing and then when Tsunade proposes ways to prevent deaths like Nawaki's he shoots her down. He made Tsunade, a Senju child, a soldier at six, under his personal command and influence. When he became hokage he grabbed three promising six year olds, two orphans and one Senju child. Which was the exact opposite of what Hashirama wanted when he founded the village, and now publicly dismisses Tsunade when she's grown and is doing more than being a tool for him.
Gets the other grandchild killed at 12, a genin. About the same age as Itama Senju was when he was killed. And I'm sure Mito lost family and clan members to war during her childhood too, maybe she had a sibling once upon a time who also never reached adulthood.

Maybe Mito was pissed about Nawaki, about Hiruzen's leadership in general.
Having her alive wasn't politically savvy and she's so old anyways wouldn't it be smarter to get rid of her.
Smarter to put the fox in a young child, who has a clan-tie but not a direct blood-relation to one founder. Who doesn't have her own voice in the village because she's a foreigner and with the fox she's also a monster.
Having insane thoughts about Mito outliving her husband, her entire generation, her married Clan, her homeland and what it means for her to be the first Jinchuuriki

This was an excuse to draw elderly Mito but also I genuinely believe Mito becoming the jinchuuriki had….ramifications beyond what canon showed us
Like the tailed beasts were canonically free romaning prior to Madara and Hashirama’s gotta-catch-them-all Pokémon spree, you can’t be telling me people weren’t worshipping these giant chakra beasts as some kind of greater spirit or even god akin to yokai worship in Japan. Or at the very least, forces of nature that were something people fear to meddle with. Like in a “I don’t really practice [religion]”, but I’m not going to go desecrate the old shrine by the old tree, that’s bad luck kind of way
So. capturing the tailed beast within you. That’s unheard of. Insanity. Blasphemy. Is Mito still a human, can a human even contain a god? Or is she the fox now, wearing human skin? When her eyes turn red and slitted and she smiles a fox’s smile and her shadow belies something much older and angry and void of humanity, can anyone really trust that she is in control?
At least she had Hashirama, the god of shinobi to ‘contain’ her. And then she did not.
There has to be a section of people who believe Mito containing the Fox has cursed the land with the Fox’s vengeance. Uzushio, Konoha, the Senju grounds. And when early Konoha embroils itself in war and remembers Madara bringing the fox, or later Konoha experiences the fox Again, and Uzushio falls and so do the Senju,
isn’t that a logical conclusion?
Mito watching history pass her by, “blessed” with the Uzumaki’s long lifespan and whatever the fox dealt her. She married into the Senju, she belongs to that clan and not the Uzumaki anymore. But the Senju is gone and so is her husband and her brother in law, his body never recovered. Her natal clan is scattered to the winds and now she is princess of nothing. The survivors of Uzu, the diaspora that flees to Konoha, bitter over Konoha’s lack of action and claiming she has forgotten her roots, do not approach her.
The empty Senju compound rots around her and Uzushio becomes ruins she cannot return to, people grow up terrified and blaming her in equal breath for misfortune, for thinking that she deserved the power of a god. But what else is left for her now, but to continue living with the kyuubi sealed within her?
I don’t think the vitrol against jinchuuriki only started in naruto’s era, when the fox broke free of Kushina. I think it started much earlier from the very beginning.
So Mito is alone for a very long time, and yet she’s not, because she has with her the very curse that she is the jailer for, and when she finally nears the end and Kushina asks her how she managed it, Mito tells this sweet, cheerful little child to love the fox, because with weight and social ostracisation of being a jinchuuriki plus Uzumaki longevity (if not even the god of shinobi gets the chance to walk with an Uzumaki to the very end of life, who else can?) it is the only way to endure and carry this duty to the very end.

How long do you think Madara could have lived if he hadn't started shit? Like, if he married Tobi and stayed in the village? Could he been able to meet Obito? I like the idea of a very old Madara surrounded by his kids, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
My personal headcannon is that he would semi adopt Orochimaru, seeing a lot of himself in him.
Honestly, he'd probably outlive everyone lol
But awwww the thought of Madatobi as an old couple surrounded by kids/grandkids makes my heart ache :'3

Hashirama, as the head of the football team, along with Tobirama
Izuna, the head of the cheerleading team. He loves to cross dress, and he's dating Toka.
Mito, the most popular girl on the campus. Hashirama’s fiancé because of family arrangements (they plan on ending the engagement when they graduate cuz they can't see themselves as a couple.)
Toka, the muscles of the cheerleading team. The one who carries and tosses Izuna (her pretty princess) around.
Madara, a tsundere with straight A's on all subjects. He has a history of being a great gymnast, but he had to stop when Tajima died cause he had to work for Izuna's sake (it's just the two of them)
Context:
Izuna asked madara if he could fill in a position in the cheerleading squad cause their member had a sprained ankle. The games start in a few hours, so it's an emergency. Madara watches all of Izuna's practice, which means he's familiar with the moves. Izuna says he'll do the dishes for a month, in which Madara agrees.
Hashirama sees Madara and develops a crush, thinking the Uchiha is a girl. Completely clueless that it's his nerdy friend. Tobirama is stumped with his Aniki's stupidity, Izuna is pissed, Toka is amused, and Mito is pinning for the two.
