There have always been times in my life I've felt the need to sit with my Grandmothers. Most of the time my visits were spontaneous and completely unplanned. Like today's. Sometimes it was because there was some crazy stuff going on that I didn't know where else to go to let things settle until I could deal with them. Sometimes I had no reason other than I just wanted to be near. I've made a lot of changes in my life since 1996 when Gramma Violet passed and lots more changes since Gramma Mabel passed. Sharing a Cherry Pepsi Cola instead of some rum, rye or beer is just one of those changes! LOL! Both my Grandmothers were really strong women. They both lived a long life into their elder golden years. They both loved deeply. They both held strong and steadfast to their values of family and an appreciation for the lakes and beaches and the ocean and good music and dancing. They loved music and dancing! But not necessarily in front of others. They were different in many ways too but they had an innerstanding of one another when they joined together round our table for family dinners. Since their passings both sides of my family have become fragmented. It's as if our extended family units were slowly unraveled from each other and now it would seem strange to put us all together again in one place. Also, my sense of family and who is in my family has changed. Some family we have by blood, some family we choose with our hearts. In the end we're all ONE family and it would do us well to remember that. I'm grateful for the love my Grandmothers extended to me and for all they taught me. I have a deep sense and belief they continue to help guide me and are watching. They help - and they have help.
