Summary: Based on this imagine from @thereandbackagainimagines Â
The company chattered lowly around you as you finished your stew. It was a particularly cold night and you started to shiver again as heat of your meal subsided. You stuck your hands under your arms and huddled closer to the fire, staring into the bright flames and feeling yourself grow sleepy. Between your hours on watch and the excruciating cold, you hadnât had a good nightâs sleep in over a week and it was starting to get to you. The company around the fire gave you a wide birth, knowing well how nasty you could get when you were cranky.
âHere, (Y/N), take this,â Fili said, sitting next to you. âItâll warm you up a little bit.â
You took the mug from him, realizing he had boiled water for you to drink. You smiled at him in thanks and wrapped your frozen fingers around the burning mug. You sipped on it and said, âIt doesnât bother you guys, does it?â
âThe cold? Not as much as humans, I suppose,â Fili said.
âWeâre just really hot,â Kili said, making you laugh for the first time in days.
You hummed. âOkay,â you said, sarcasm ringing in your voice.
The brothers did their best to raise your spirits. Though they often played their tricks on you, you couldnât stay mad at them for long and you almost always enjoyed your time with them. You listened to Filiâs stories about what he remembered of the mountain and held your steaming mug close to your face. Through its fog, you could see Thorin looking at you from across the fire. You lowered your eyes with a blink, not taking too much notice.
Long after you had finished your drink and had felt the cold creeping into your limbs, the company drifted off to their bedrolls for the night. Thankfully, you didnât have watch.
âLeave the fire burning tonight,â Thorin said to Dwalin when he moved to snuff it out.
You were so tempted to curl up right next to the fire and sleep there. You raised your eyebrows. It wasnât a terrible idea.
â(Y/N), come on, you should try to get some sleep. We have a long day tomorrow,â Fili called to you.
âYeah, Iâm gonna⊠Iâm gonna sleep over here,â you said, scooching closer to the flames and leaning down on your elbow.
âThat is a terrible idea,â he said. He rolled his eyes at your glare. âYou canât bring your bedroll over there.â
âI donât need a bedroll. Trust me, Iâll sleep like a baby without it, as long as Iâm not shivering all night. I just want to be warm.â You laid down in the dirt and brought your knees to your chest, facing the dimming flames. You tucked your chin in your cloak and hummed. This was good.
Fili groaned your name in frustration.
You lifted your head. âWhatever you have in your blood that helps you deal with this agonizing, freezing cold, I donât have it! Just let me be,â you finished, stuffing your mouth in the crook of your elbow.
âYou wonât be so cold when you wake up on fire because you rolled too far. Who will help you then?â Thorin spoke now, standing above you.
You shrank a bit. Arguing with Fili was one thing, but arguing with Thorin took a whole new type of courage. âWhoever is on watch,â you said shortly.
âThat would be me,â Thorin said with raised brows and his arms crossed over his chest.
âWell, will you save me, then?â you spat.
He looked at you for a moment, silent, angry tension growing. Without a word, he turned and sat on a log across the camp.
âIâd rather burn than freeze to death anyway,â you mumbled, pulling your cloak up to your chin and closing your eyes. Frustration and, though you didnât want to admit it, embarrassment flooded through you. Why did Thorin care what happened to you anyway? One less mouth to feed if you were to die. You huffed and concentrated on the warmth radiating from the fire. It didnât take you long to fall into a deep, much needed sleep.
*
The smell of breakfast and the noise of scurrying dwarves woke you. You opened your eyes to see the camp almost completely packed up. You also noticed that you werenât as close to the now smothered fire as you were when you fell asleep. You sat up, bewildered, and saw Fili and Kili standing above you.
âWe let you sleep,â Kili said. âYou get really cranky when you donât get enough sleep.â
âSorry,â you said with a small smile. Your cloak felt heavy on you as you stood, and you realized an extra one hung from your shoulders. It was thicker and warmer than yours and beautiful, soft furs hung from the top of it. A cloak like this could only belong to royals, you knew. You slid it off your shoulders and held it out to Fili. âThank you for letting me borrow this.â
âThatâs not mine,â he said.
You looked to Kili who nodded in the direction of his uncle who was attaching his bedroll to his pack. Your eyes widened and your head hung low as you walked over to Thorin. You stopped before him and held out his heavy cloak. âThank you for- for giving me- for this.â
He took it and fastened it around his shoulders. âI decided I didnât want to see you burn or freeze,â he said.
âYouâre the one who moved me.â
He nodded, throwing his pack over his back. âBelieve it or not, you were overheating sleeping that close to the fire. Iâve never seen cheeks so red.â
You breathed out a laugh, remembering how the neighborhood boys used to tease you for that exact trait. âWell, thank you,â you said, turning from him to gather your own things.
He called you back. His fierce blue eyes cut into yours. âIf anything were to happen, you know I would do my best to keep you safe.â
âI know that,â you nodded. âWeâre a company. We protect each other.â
He hummed. âGather your things, we should be off.â
All day, you remained toward the back of the group. You felt well rested for the first time in weeks, but your mind was overwhelmed in thought. Though dwarves are less affected by the cold, Thorin must have been freezing without his cloak during the night. He shouldnât have given it to you, you decided. He was possibly the most important one on this quest, he was the leader of the company, the King of Erebor. Nothing should happen to him, especially not because of you.
Your defiance and frustration echoed through you with every step you took toward the mountain, but you also worked to push away ever growing thoughts of his kindness and consideration. You knew he was deeply loved by his people, you had simply never thought about why.
The day flew by with your mind traveling elsewhere. You gathered firewood and assisted with making supper. Again, you placed yourself close to the fire as you ate. Thorin was the last to fill his mug with stew and as he reached into the pot over the flames, you called to him. âI wanted to apologize for my attitude last night.â
He surprised you by sitting next to you, on the other side of his nephews. âThatâs alright, (Y/N). Your attitude is almost always much brighter than any of ours here, despite your hardships. I know none of this is easy-â
âThat doesnât give me a right to treat you that way.â
He looked at you and you expected him to chide you for interrupting him. âYouâre allowed to slip every once in a while,â he said. Â
You grinned and ate your stew. The rest of the evening passed with you listening to Kili and Filiâs stories by the fire. Every so often, you heard Thorin chuckle or correct his nephews, or even tell a story of his own. It was as if he had shed his cold, responsible demeanor and become the dwarf Kili and Fili had told you so much about. You couldnât believe this was the same Thorin.
The four of you stayed awake long after the rest of the company had taken to their bedrolls and finally, Thorin advised you all to rest. You watched him smother the fire with dirt and felt dread and even fear rise in your chest. He noticed. âWe canât let it burn tonight. We are too close to the mountain, wargs and orcs will be looking for the smoke.
You nodded and wished him a good night with a small smile. You laid down on your bedroll and curled yourself up to sleep, closing your eyes. You heard someone set up close to you and assumed it was Fili or Kili, not bothering to open your eyes. A heavy arm landed across your waist and you started when you smelled Thorinâs familiar scent washing over you. You turned to him with wide eyes.
âNo one will be freezing to death tonight,â he said, with the hint of a smile beneath this thick beard.
You lie on your back, looking up at him, laughing when your chin shook in an involuntary shiver. âAre you so sure about that?â
âI am,â he said, adjusting his cloak so it covered both of you and pulled you closer to his warm body.
You rolled into his chest and felt him tense as you snuggled your head under his chin and sent your shaking fingers around his waist. Your other hand buried itself in the fur of his vest on his chest and you sighed, content and safe. You felt him relax, pulling you even closer to him and tucking his cloak warmly around you. You glued yourself to him, fitting perfectly in his arms and soon your shivering stopped.
As you drifted off into sleep, you felt his fingers tangle in the ends of your undone hair and his lips leaving light kisses on the top of your head. âI told you Iâd keep you safe,â he said.

McCoy has to save the lives of his captain and first officer a few too many times. To his great surprise, Spock comes to see if he is all right.
2k of gen or pre-Spones, on AO3 here!
This is my @startrekwintergiftexchange gift for @rickybutlersays! Apologies for the belatedness -- my life has been hectic for the last few weeks and I wanted to make sure I was happy with this before sharing it.
~
McCoy was burying himself in paperwork.Â
If asked, of course, he would have said that he was doing very important work that could not be put off, thank you very much, and that he should be left the hell alone, but he was self-aware enough to know that he was really doing his very best to avoid thinking about anything. The last few weeks had been hard even for a starship whose crew were thoroughly accustomed to absurd and dangerous situations, and McCoy was feeling distinctly worn down. A few rounds of drinks with Scotty the day before had failed to improve his mood, so he was down to hoping that if he spent enough time doing paperwork, he would somehow trick his mind into a hard reset.
Given that he wanted to be left alone, he really should have known it was inevitable that he would be interrupted by Spock.Â
The Vulcan waltzed into McCoyâs office with all of his characteristic efficiency and determination, and McCoy resisted the urge to groan. He knew telling Spock to leave would only delay the inevitable â once Spock decided he wanted to have a conversation, there was very little that could stop him. He turned to face Spock and raised a grumpy eyebrow in his direction.Â
âWhat is it, Mister Spock?â
âDoctor,â said Spock, skipping pleasantries in favor of diving directly into the conversation as usual, âOver the past seventeen days, you have been placed in no less than three situations in which the lives of both of this shipâs highest-ranking officers have been in jeopardy. As the commanding medical officer, youââ
âIâve saved your and Jimâs asses a few times lately, yeah.â McCoy glared at Spock. âWhatâs your point?âÂ
âSimilar situations have been known to cause significant stress among humans. In factââ
âWell, itâs not my fault my species doesnât live up to your supreme Vulcan standards. Stop bothering me and go cry about it to someone else.âÂ
âI am not crying, nor am I attempting to bother you. I am merelyââ
âItâs a figure of speech, you pointy-earedââ
âDoctor,â Spock said with that poorly-disguised irritation that McCoy so relished bringing out in him, âWould you allow me to finish speaking before you insist on passing judgment?â
McCoy subsided grumpily, resisting the urge to refuse simply to annoy Spock further. He knew his irritation was not entirely Spockâs fault and, reluctant as he was to acknowledge it, taking out all his anger on his fellow officer was neither fair to Spock nor helpful for the running of the ship.Â
âThank you,â said Spock, when it became clear that McCoy would remain silent. âNow, as you evidently do not wish to be disturbed, I will attempt to be brief. Are you experiencing an adequate state of mental and physical wellbeing?â
McCoyâs expression softened slightly, against his will.Â
âSpock,â he said, âAre you checking on me?â
Spock frowned. âYes, I am attempting to verify your wellbeing, or possibly lack thereof. Was this not clear?â
âI guess,â said McCoy, leaning back in his chair a little sheepishly. âItâs just surprising, is all.âÂ
Spock frowned slightly. âI see.â
Unsure what to make of that, McCoy ignored it. âI appreciate you feeling the need to check, but Iâm not emotionally compromised, or whatever it is youâre worried about. Iâm a doctor, not a fainting maiden. I know what Iâm doing.â
âI was not concerned about you losing consciousness.â
McCoy rolled his eyes. âI know.â
âHowever, I find it doubtful that you are as completely unaffected by recent events as you are attempting to appear.â
McCoy resisted the urge to sigh. He should have known he could not shake Spockâs attention so easily. âIâm fine. Donât worry about me.â
âI would think, given your constant and unnecessary emphasis on emotionalism, that you would not suppress your own feelings in an unhelpful manner such as this.â
McCoy raised an eyebrow. âThis isnât the kind of thing a man wants to be bickered with about. Maybe I just havenât shown my feelings to you.â
Spock raised his own eyebrow, undaunted. âThe captain is also concerned for your wellbeing.â
âYouâre talking about me with Jim now?â
âThe wellbeing of a senior officer on this ship is of concern to both of us.â
âOh, so youâre worried about my efficiency?â McCoy crossed his arms. âI told you, I know what Iâm doing. Iâm working just fine.â
âI never stated that efficiency was the cause of my concern.â
âThen what is?â
âYour psychological wellbeing.â
âYouâre no therapist, Spock.â
âI do not need to be a professional to suspect that you have experienced significant fear and are likely still dealing with the effects of those emotions.â
McCoy remained obstinately silent. Spock said nothing more for a long moment, observing the doctor with a small frown.
âIf you do not wish to discuss this matter with me, you may say so, and I will take my leave. I am sure that the captainââ
âNo,â said McCoy, running a hand through his hair distractedly. As much as Spock insisted otherwise, he knew the Vulcan cared about the opinion other senior officers held of him, and he did not want to refuse his help without reason. âThatâs notâ I donâtâ ugh.â He sighed/groaned and glared, perhaps a little halfheartedly, at Spock.
Spock said nothing, simply considering McCoy. Something about his silence, uncommon in their usual bickering and almost uncharacteristic, made him feel that he could not leave it at that.
âI was scared, all right? I was terrified. But Iâm also a goddamn professional, and that means Iâm not going to let a little terror get in the way of doing my job and saving your lives.â
Spock tilted his head slightly. âI am aware of that, doctor, but your job is done now. You can allow yourself to feel.â
âThatâs rich, coming from you,â McCoy muttered.
âI have been reliably and repeatedly assured of how important you find it to acknowledge and respond to human emotion. If you are refraining from doing so, it represents a significant and likely negative departure from the norm.â
McCoy frowned at Spock. âAre you⊠worried about me?â
âIf you insist on using such blatantly Terran terminology, then yes, that is more or less accurate.â
âOh.â
âDo you find this offensive?â
âNo, I⊠no. Itâs fine.â
Spock nodded, looking vaguely satisfied. McCoy was not sure what to do with that. Slightly unnerved, he rallied himself for another attempt at their usual bickering.Â
âListen, I bet you havenât had this conversation with Jim, so you donât need to spend so much time harping on me. Just because I talk about feelings a lot doesnât mean they debilitate me. Iâm not an emotional invalid or whatever youâre thinking.âÂ
âI have.â
âWhat?â
âI have had this conversation with Jim.â
McCoyâs eyebrow raised almost without his permission. âYou expect me to believe that you went up to the captain like this, unprompted, and asked about his feelings?â
âHe initiated the conversation, but we discussed the concern we had felt for each other and the psychological consequences thereof together. It was also in this conversation that we discovered our mutual concern for you. As the interaction seemed to provide a great benefit to his mental state, but he will not have free time for approximately another four point three hours, I deemed it wise to come myself to initiate the conversation.â
âI see,â said McCoy, rather lamely. âSo can I expect Jim to show up and have this conversation with me again in a few hours?â
âIt is not unlikely.âÂ
âThatâs good to know, I guess.â
Spock ignored the comment. âDo you finally believe that my reasons for asking after your wellbeing are genuine?â
McCoy considered this. He realized, a little surprised at himself, that he had indeed stopped suspecting Spock of any ulterior motive. âYeah. I guess I do.â
âI am gratified.â
Awkward silence descended over the pair for a few moments. It was McCoy who eventually spoke with a sigh.
âI am glad youâre alive. And all right. You and Jim. I do think about what might have happened if I had failed. Itâs not a pleasant thought.â
Spock put his hand on McCoyâs shoulder. McCoy was sure it was a move Spock had calculated to produce an optimal reaction in him, but he found that he appreciated it regardless.Â
âYou did not fail, nor do I think it likely that you would have done so.â
McCoy frowned. âYou canât deny that the odds were against us a couple of times. It could easily have gone wrong.â
âI have found, doctor, that you have a consistent and almost illogical propensity for succeeding in the face of overwhelming odds.â
McCoy blinked. He opened his mouth, then closed it again, feeling rather like a fish out of water.Â
âIâ oh. Thank you, Spock.âÂ
âI am merely stating the truth, doctor,â said Spock. âAdditionally, I would like you to know that I appreciate what you have done for myself, the captain, and everyone else on this ship. Your bravery is commendable.â
McCoy narrowed his eyes. âAre you just saying that because you think itâll make me feel better?â
Spock frowned at him, looking slightly puzzled. âYes. But that does not mean I am not genuine.â
That startled a laugh out of McCoy. âThatâs fair enough, I guess.â
âIndeed.â
McCoy had a feeling the expression on his face was edging dangerously close to fondness, but he could not quite bring himself to mind. He found himself speaking without quite having meant to.Â
âYou know I donât actually hate you, right? You irritate me to hell and back sometimes, but I care about you.â
Spock paused, looking at him. After a moment, he said, âI had suspected as much.âÂ
McCoyâs eyes narrowed slightly. He was not oblivious to the significance of Spockâs phrasing. âYou werenât sure?â
âThe finer details of human social interaction continue to elude me from time to time.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhat?â
McCoy sighed. âI said Iâm sorry.â
âIf your remarks were not serious, you were partaking in the human tradition of teasing, correct? Why do you apologize?âÂ
âA joke is in poor taste if only one party knows itâs really a joke. I should have made it clear before now.â
Spock considered this for a moment before speaking. âI see. In that case, I accept your apology and thank you.â
McCoy huffed a quiet laugh at Spockâs formality. âYouâre welcome.â
âI also believe I should say that I hold a similar lack of ill will towards you,â said Spock. âThough I am, as you say, irritated to hell and back from time to time.âÂ
That startled a louder laugh out of McCoy, this time more delighted than amused. âIâm glad to hear that.â
Spock nodded. McCoy, still smiling, leaned back in his chair.Â
The whistle of the intercom broke the silence of the room. The familiar sound of Jimâs voice came a moment later.Â
âBridge to Doctor McCoy.âÂ
âMcCoy here.â
âBones, have you seen Spock? I need him on the bridge and I canât for the life of me figure out where heâs gone.â
McCoy resisted the urge to laugh. âYeah, Iâll send him along.â
âThanks. Kirk out.â
The intercom went silent. McCoy raised an eyebrow at Spock, smirking.
âLooks like our conversationâs over.â
âSo it would seem,â said Spock. âThank you for your time, doctor. It has been most profitable.âÂ
âYouâre welcome,â said McCoy.
Spock stood and made to leave. Before he could go, McCoy found himself speaking up.
âOh, and Spock?â
Spock paused in the doorway. âYes, doctor?â
âThanks for checking on me. I appreciate it.â
Spock turned back to McCoy for a moment. âI am glad.â
He left without another word, striding off to his highly necessary task on the bridge. McCoy let him go. After a moment, he turned back to his paperwork. He found that he was feeling distinctly better than before. He huffed a small laugh, incredulous, before going back to work.
It was only when Spock was long gone, far across the ship doing whatever logical and efficient job needed doing, that McCoy realized he was still smiling.

In the second panel, the person in the red shirt has a surprised expression and trembling lines around their body. There is a large "CRK!" sound effect as their thought bubble with the list gets crack lines all over it.
In the final panel, the person has a new thought bubble, which reads, "Oh no, my perfect plan I didn't tell anyone about is ruined." The original thought bubble with the list has broken up into pieces, with the words "Visit relatives at some point" in all caps written into the gaps between pieces. End ID.]
She had suffered so much, Nerdanel had known that, but seeing glimpses of what the poor girl had endured and survived made it unbearably real.
Nerdanel could feel herself shaking with the effort of holding in her tears, but Maglor was so calm, so very calm as he settled onto the bed beside Celebrian, every movement slow and careful.
She didnât look at him, her gaze blank and unseeing, but she didnât draw back when he took her hand and eased closer, still singing softly. Celebrianâs keening quieted but her mind was still leaking, the pain and anguish in the tangled fragmented images so heartbreaking and overwhelming that Nerdanel did not know how Maglor could bear it but he didnât falter, his golden voice steady. The notes he wove shone bright as stars, a gentle blanket of light and sound that he enfolded around her.
Celebrian.
A shiver went through her, her small slender hands quivering, but Maglor kept still, watching her face closely.
Celebrian. Iâm with you. It was a dream, not real.
A soft broken sound escaped her lips, another image flooding her mind, of darkness and cruel clawed hands around a slender arm, digging in so tight that blood ran. But Maglor sang another soft melody, brushing the image away as if he were waving away mist. In its place he sent an image of the room, himself and Nerdanel, the calm peace and quiet of the night lit by bright stars visible through the filmy curtains.
You are safe, sweetheart. No harm can come to you here. Can you feel my hand holding yours?
A slow blink, then the blankness in her eyes receded a little as she nodded her head slightly, turning toward him. The faint light of the lamp reflected off the silver streams of tears on her cheeks as she looked up.
âMaglor?â
Her voice was a thin hoarse thread in the stillness, her lips quivering as she began to cry, burying her face against his chest. Maglor drew her close, tucking her head under his chin, his movements still slow and careful.
Nerdanel felt her tears spill free at last, watching as Celebrian curled into Maglor, her slender fingers fisting in his sleep shirt so tight her hand shook. He gathered her up onto his lap carefully, never breaking his song.
At a glance from her son, Nerdanel quickly wiped the moisture from her cheeks and came to sit on Celebrianâs other side, brushing the sweat dampened fall of silver hair back from her neck so the cool night breeze could dry her skin.
It had been a long time since sheâd had elflings who had woken from bad dreams, but it came rushing back to her as she rubbed gentle circles on Celebrianâs back, humming along softly with Maglorâs melody that had become a familiar lullaby. It was the one she had sang to all her children, long, long ago, but most often for Maglor who had always begged for the song whenever he was in need of comfort. And now they sang it for Celebrian who quieted, her breathing growing slow and deep as she let herself fall into the safety of their soothing song.
She wondered how many nights Maglor had spent like this, watching as her son rocked Celebrian like a child until she was deeply and truly asleep. Then he rose, pulling the tangled sheets back and settled her into the bed once more. Nerdanel stood and helped him straighten the sheets and blankets, drawing them up around Celebrian who now slept peacefully as a child.
Only once they had slipped out of the room did Maglorâs calm falter, his face twisting with emotion as he slumped against the wall. Tears were silently flowing down his cheeks, and he smoothed them away with a sleeve before pressing a hand to his face and breathing deeply, trying to regain his composure.
âShe needs to go to Lorien,â Nerdanel told him in a low voice, placing her hand lightly on his shoulder. âShe needs more help than can we can give her.â
And judging from her sonâs haunted face, Nerdanel knew that Celebrian was not the only one who desperately needed healing.
âShe wonât go if I cannot go with her,â Maglor returned, voice muffled and tired. âAnd I cannot, no matter how much I want to.â
He extended his hand toward her, palm up. The scar on his hand shone silver in the pale light as he met her gaze, his eyes full of so much grief it made her throat ache.
âLorien burns evil,â he whispered. âI have already burned once from Fatherâs hallowed jewel, and so I cannot - I cannot -â His voice faltered in shame and misery, looking away from her horrified stare.
The sight of the scar on his hand made her heart grow cold.
He believed - no. He could not, and yet she saw in his eyes he did.
Despair and fury rose in her like a raging flame, and she wrapped her arms around her son, drawing him close.
âNo,â she said against his hair fiercely. âNo.â
ooooh for the fake dating prompts: geraskier + #1? pretty please đ
They were actually quite the good kisser, but they of course would never ever tell them that.
âWe need a cover story,â Jaskier says. âIf the Duchess thinks youâre here as a witcher, sheâll have her guards throw you out before you have time to get annoyed by all the people.â
Geralt wants to argue, but the bard actually has a good point. âI could pretend to be your bodyguard again. At a gathering this size, there have to be at least a few nobles there youâve cuckolded.â
Jaskier wrinkles his nose, considering. âYou showing up with swords might put her on her guard, whether you're here as a witcher or bodyguard."
âThen what do you suggest?â Geralt crosses his arms over the chest, scowling. After passing a couple of messages for the Redanian Secret Service, the bard thinks heâs some kind of mastermind at espionage.
Jaskier thinks for a moment, then brightens. âI know! You can come as my apprentice who is really my lover.â
âWhy not just your apprentice?â
âBecause no offense, Geralt, but no one is going to look at you and think youâre in training to become a bard. And gods help us if anyone asks you to sing. So it behooves us if they think that the only reason I keep you around is because of the service you provide to my instrument.â He wiggles his hips.
Geralt feels his lips twitch of their own volition. "Hm, not sure if we can pull that off."
âAnd whyever not?â Jaskier looks offended.
âIf Iâm your lover, youâd have to go at least three days without letting anyone else into your pants. Might kill you.â
âI can go three days without sex!â Jaskier plants his hands on his hips.
âSince when?â
âI went nearly two weeks without when we were traveling through Velen!â
âAnd you bitched the entire time.â
âI would have done that anyway. Velen is terrible.â
Geralt canât argue with him there. âNo oneâs going to believe weâre really lovers.â
âWhy not?â
"Because no oneâs going to think that Iâm the kind of person you take to bed," Geralt doesnât say, thinking of the pretty barmaids and fancy nobles Jaskier normally pursues. Instead, he says, âThere will be people you know there. Theyâll have seen you with your lovers before.â
âAnd?â Jaskier arches an eyebrow.
Geralt searches for the right words for a moment. âWhen youâre sleeping with someone, youâre usually all over them. You can't keep your hands or your lips off them. Itâs why you nearly get gelded for fucking the wrong person so often. Youâre not subtle.â
Jaskier opens his mouth as if to argue, then closes it. âThen I suppose Iâll have to do that with you.â
Geralt snorts, skeptical.
âWhat?â Jaskier asks, taking a step closer. âYou think it will be such a hardship, draping myself over you?â
The neck of Geraltâs armor feels a little too tight. Did he have it fitted wrong? âNo one will buy it.â
Jaskier takes another step, moving into Geraltâs space. âThen we really should start practicing now.â
âI donât need to practice,â Geralt growls. âIâm not a spotty youth whoâs never held a girlâs hand before.â
Not that hand holding comes up much in his intimate encounters, but heâs not going to bring that up.
âEven the greatest master at his craft needs to keep his skills sharp.â Jaskier tilts his head to the side, studying Geraltâs face. âAnd youâre right. Weâre only going to be able to sell this if we look like two people who are used to being intimate with each other. Kiss me.â
Geralt canât quite school the surprise out of his face. âWhat?â
âKiss me,â Jaskier says again. âDo you want to take the Duchess down or not?â
âNot sure how kissing you will help that.â
âWe might need to kiss at some point to maintain our cover,â Jaskier says. âBest not to risk it, right?â
Geralt lets his gaze drop to Jaskierâs pink mouth. The bardâs lips have always been inconveniently pretty, especially when theyâre parted in stunned offense or curled into a wicked smile. He almost says no, that heâll figure out another way to get close to the Duchess. Itâs best not to let Jaskier anywhere near a contract this dangerous anyway. Jaskier can go back to his succession of pretty lovers and Geralt can find and kill a monster, just like they always do.
Heâs about to pull back when Jaskier seems to get tired of waiting for Geralt to make a move. Before Geralt can react, Jaskierâs lips are on his and suddenly, Geralt isnât thinking about the Duchess or the contract anymore.
Jaskierâs lips are warm and soft against his, tasting of the wine they had with dinner. He doesnât realize that heâs cupping Jaskierâs face in his hands until he registers the prickle of stubble against his palm. He slides one hand down, over the silky fabric of Jaskierâs doublet, warm from the bardâs body heat. Jaskier shivers as Geraltâs hand rests on his lower back.
Geralt drags Jaskier closer, breath hitching as Jaskierâs fingers tangle in his hair. He can hear Jaskierâs heartbeat hammering and can practically taste the arousal in the air. It would be so easy to drag Jaskier the short distance to the bed, to lose himself in Jaskierâs taste and the feel of him andâŠ
Jaskier pulls away, blinking up at Geralt with the dazed look of someone emerging from a deep sleep. For a moment, they stare at each other. Jaskierâs pretty mouth is swollen from kisses, a sight that sends something hot and possessive surging through Geraltâs belly.
Jaskier clears his throat and laughs, the sound more high-pitched than usual. âAnd you think we couldnât pull it off!â
âPull what off?â It takes Geralt a moment to remember why they were doing this in the first place. The Duchess. The contract. Right.
âPretending to be two people who are intimately acquainted.â Jaskier waggles his eyebrows. âNow you wonât have to pretend to be unable to get enough of my lips.â
Geralt rolls his eyes. âSure, bard.â
âOh, donât lie to me. You have to admit, that was a damn good kiss.â
âIâve had better,â Geralt lies.
Jaskier gasps, mouth falling open. Itâs a sight that makes Geralt glad that his new armor has a codpiece. âPure and utter slander! Iâve had it from reputable sources that Iâm the finest kisser on this side of the Amell Mountains.â
âYou know theyâre paid to give you pretty compliments at the Passiflora, right?â
âBrute.â Jaskier pokes Geralt in the chest. âThatâs a terrible thing to say to your pretend lover.â
âForgive me,â Geralt says dryly. âIâve never had a fake lover before.â
âAnd at this rate, you never will again.â Jaskier turns on his heel, nose in the air.
With the bard looking away, Geralt reaches up to touch his lips. He can still taste mulled wine and can still feel the warmth of soft pink lips against him. Heâd like nothing more than to pull Jaskier close and lose himself in another one of those kisses.
But this is just pretend and Geralt canât let Jaskier know the effect he has on him. So he wipes away the lingering taste of Jaskier with the back of his hand and goes to sharpen his sword. Thereâs a monster to kill, after all.

Summary:
Life was so damn weird.
Why shouldn't his dead best friend come back to life to haunt him?
That was just a normal Tuesday in Lambert's shitty book.
Life was so damn weird.Â
Almost two years had passed between the Battle of Kaer Morhen and Lambert had found himself in the south- not because he liked visiting Geralt at his pompous vineyard or because he had some insane hope of seeing an old friend - but because the weather was nice and the coin somewhat better than the north. He was in Temeria when the second conjunction split the sky and his world was rocked again. What were the odds of having five major world shaking events happen in less than fifty years? Too damn high in Lambertâs opinion. But what did he know? He was just a damn witcher.
He was still in Temeria when it seemed that the dead rose and walked the earth, wearing the face of a friend long lost but not the one heâd been looking for. Voltehre, sweet and kind and dead , had come stumbling down the road toward Vizima like a dream come true although he was mud splattered, bloodied, and dazed from what seemed to be a show of chaos unheard of. The Second Conjunction screwed with a lot of things; Lambertâs head was just the beginning.
âOh, thank the gods .â The imposter breathed, quickening his limping pace toward Lambert with a lopsided but exhausted grin. âIâve not seen another Witcher sinceâŠâ It sounded like Voltehre, a little lower than Lambertâs voice and with the slight whistle on his 's' sounds, but those details only made Lambert put that much more venom into his command that the imposter âstop where he wasâ. He was too damn tired for these games.
The thing that was not Voltehre froze, mouth snapping shut.Â
âWho are you?â
âVoltehre, of the Wolf School.â His eyes snapped to the medallion on Lambertâs chest like it was a betrayal that he hadn't been recognized. âIâm not sure how I arrived here, just that some weeks ago I was at my trials and then the sky was tearing open and I was south of Vizima. Is it true? Has there been a second joining of the spheres?â The evidence was all around them, hundreds more monsters walked the Continent without more than a few dozen witchers to deal with them. Anyone with eyes could see that and Voltehre had never been stupid. He didn't have an ounce of self preservation around strangers either, âIâm sorry, I didnât get your name. Are you-â
Lambert drew his sword, silver and leveled it at the thing. The sunlight, tinged red by the lingering chaos in the air, glinted off the blade. The Thing put its hands up.Â
âIâm sorry? Really I donât- I donât know what to do here. Youâre of the Wolves, yes? I can- I can prove thatâs where Iâm from though I donât have a medallion yet. My master was Vesemir.âÂ
âPut your arm to the blade.â Lambert said, ignoring how his heart clenched at the memory of the old wolf and the ashes he had left on top of that mountain.
âWhat?â
âProve that you arenât a fucking doppler or some shit. Put your damn arm to the blade.â It stepped forward, rolled up the sleeve of its dirty white shirt, and pressed his entire forearm against the length of silver. He didnât burn but his eyes narrowed, sweeping over Lambert from his hair to his boots. Then he turned his arm and drew it back so that a well of blood rose to the surface. Red. Human red.Â
âYou want me to cast Yrden? Prove that Iâm a witcher too?âÂ
âYes.âÂ
Voltehreâs specialty was never signs but he was better at them than Lambert and the trap that glowed some feet away was dull but passable. It was also unfathomably correct in that the blond had always had a certain flair to his magic. That trap on the side of the road had the same off color that drove the mages to tears trying to find the reason for it. It wasn't something that could be replicated.
â Fuck .â Lambert laughed, manic and rough. âFucking- I-â He sheathed the sword and took a step forward, then two steps back. No. No he wasnât going to run. Not this time.
âLambert?â The - Voltehre breathed. As though Lambert was the one back from the dead.
He gritted his teeth and nodded. âYeah, itâs me. Lambert.â
So then two worlds were shattered.Â
The side of the road in nowhere-Temeria wasnât the place to piece together their stories so, while still holding Voltehre - fucking Voltehre - at arms length they set off in search of a safe place to settle down for a few days. It came just up the road in the form of a manor, abandoned after the village was decimated by the new wave of monsters and earthquakes. The noble family of the region had lasted a little longer than their fieldhands but not by much and Lambert had no compunctions about looting the clothes and blankets and whatever jewelry he could find. If he came across any Scâoiatel heâd have to point them in this direction for supplies- a conjunction was probably the best chance they had to peacefully reclaim territory after all.
âFind a room that we can defend, one that gets a lot of sun so we donât need the fireplace.â He was practically barking the orders like he was an old master and he couldnât make himself stop. If he stopped he would have to look at the barely-a-man that was his long lost best friend and heâd fall to damn pieces. To see the judgment in his eyes as they sorted through the possession of the dead like common bandits. âYou uh- you want furs or woven blankets? Woven, right?âÂ
âYeah.âÂ
Twenty-seven years. A voice whispered. Twenty-seven years and you still remember his preferences. Pathetic memory chaser than you are.Â
He gathered two blankets for Voltehre and set them on the table with the rest of his pilfered supplies. He moved on to the storerooms which held preserves and he took as many as he could, planning to raid it again when they left. Peaches, beans, even watermelon that must have cost a small fortune in this part of the world had been jarred. Little luxuries only afforded to their ilk in the time of greatest sorrow.
He arrived in the west wing bedroom just in time to see Voltehre stumble and catch himself with a soft curse.Â
âYou alright?âÂ
âIâve been jerked through time and have had three weeks to heal from a blow to the knee and head from the trial on top of nearly losing my leg to a kikimore in a swamp -" He sighed, shoulders slumping, "- no, Lambert. Iâm not okay.âÂ
âI- yeah thatâs pretty shit.â Maybe they were both in shock. Witchers didnât really get shock but there was a first time for everything. âSit down and let me take a look at your leg then. Actually wait, strip. Iâm sure I can find you cleaner clothes to change into after I make sure youâre not about to d- uh. Not about to fall over.âÂ
âItâs kind of nice to know that you didnât get any taller since the trials.â Voltehre said, almost like he was making a joke to ease the tension. Lambert, unsure whether it was a joke or not, snorted anyway. Just because Voltehre hit a growth spurt at sixteen to rival Geralt didn't make Lambert tiny.Â
âWell not everyone can have the genes of an ice giant.â Lambert knelt, worked his gloves off and then, carefully, placed his hands on Voltehreâs clammy skin gently. He probed around the calf, up to his knee and then a little higher. It was swollen and bruised, likely torqued from a fall but it would heal if he could simply rest it for a day or so. It certainly wasnât enough to waste a potion on.Â
âYouâll be okay, just need to rest.â He might even be able to wrangle a wrap for it. âYou can take the bed and Iâll make a pallet tonight.âÂ
Voltehre had a little scar on his knuckle from training, the only time heâd ever been in trouble - in trouble on Lambertâs behalf no less. It caught on Lambertâs skin as he reached out, holding him still by the shoulder where he knelt. The simple touch made his breath catch and his muscles tense. He wasnât the same man heâd been⊠he wasnât Voltehreâs best friend. He was a bitter asshole outrunning fate and somehow surviving when all his friends were dead. A wretch.
âWho hurt you?â Voltehre asked, soft and earnest with his wide eyes and too-young voice. As if they were both still boys, hiding from their instructors and finding some pleasure in the horrors of their days and that there could be a single figure to blame. He always was trying to protect Lambert like he was worth it somehow and Lambert couldnât handle it. There was love and trust and stupid belief so he sneered.Â
âWhat? You want a list?âÂ
âYes, actually.âÂ
He looked up and swallowed thickly. âItâs been a really bad time. Thirty years of shit and itâs just- I missed you.â The voice in his head that sounded like Aiden whispered praise for his honesty. It was always a little kinder than his own thoughts. "This entire situation is insane and I don't know what's going on half the time."
âI know itâs different now but Iâm not and Iâd very much like it if we could pretend it wasnât for a night?â The blond witcher said. âYou can tell me all the shit that has happened, the good and the bad and all about whoever youâve charmed into staying by your side. Just donât sleep on the floor? Please?âÂ
Lambert sighed and closed his eyes. He nodded.
Voltehre tapped his scars gently. âTell me about these?âÂ
âWell I didnât have my best friend to watch my back.â Lambert rose and jerked his chin up at the pillows. âLay down and Iâll do story time for you, better to get your knee lifted sooner rather than later.â Voltehre wiggled his way into the blankets, six feet of gangly limbs and lightly freckled skin. Once he was settled, Lambert continued. âIt was a nest of harpies. I was up in Poviss, climbed the cliffs fine and cut down the first four down in minutes.â He tossed a blanket at the blond and then began to pull his own armor off for the evening. âSo Iâm thinking itâs done with, throw the proof in my pack with some eggs and start back down. Well Iâm hanging in the air and just happen to look up when two more of the damn birds get on me - Iâm fighting one handed, high enough that the fall is going to break my damn legs, and one of them gets me in the face with her claws.â He pulled on a pair of stolen pants and bundled himself in his own furs to sit against the ornate headboard.Â
âIt made a good story that year. Won the stupid competition about who had the best scars. Got a whole bottle of gull out of it.â
âYou said earlier that this conjunction⊠thereâs not enough Witchers left to handle it. What did that mean? Is the school-â
âItâs gone, has been for years now. Nothing but dust and rock up there. Geraltâs around, soâs Eskel. Geralt set up in Toussaint a few years ago and Iâm sure heâs got the place ready for war. Probably adopted every orphan that glanced his way since this started like the idiot he is. Thatâs where weâll be going.âÂ
âOh.âÂ
âYeah. Oh.â Donât ask about the others. Just let it go.
Voltehre fell asleep without more words exchanged between them and Lambert felt almost wrong for watching him when he was so vulnerable but he was really there and a fear was rooting itself in the back of his mind that screamed the moment he looked away Voltehre would be gone again. There were so many little things he had forgotten; how there was a streak of blue in the iris of his left eye that the grasses couldnât take away, how his hair was a little shorter than heâd conjured in his mind but just as thick, the way that one canine was a little too big for his mouth and how it cemented the overgrown puppy look that heâd somehow come to associate with Eskel rather than the specimen laying on the fine feather bed beside him. He was only twenty.
Lambert had once told Aiden, quietly and as a secret, that he had loved Voltehre. Loved him in all the same ways he loved Aiden but didnât have the words to tell either of them until it was too late.Â
He loved them still. But looking at the young man, with his hand curled loosely atop Lambert's thigh and his breathing even he knew that it wasn't the same, it couldn't be that same. He had loved him as a boy and he had loved truly and deeply but that wound had been torn open and healed over again and again. He wasn't the same, he had lost the softness of youth and the belief that he could do something about it, and it wasn't right or fair but it was true. Love alone did not a good thing make. Whatever happened next would be another willing scar on his heart and he would choose to disappoint the golden spectre of his youth. His first love; alive and well despite the odds and utterly unprepared for the things he was asking to know.
Who hurt you?Â
Lambert tucked the blankets higher around the young Witcherâs shoulders.Â
Someone wanted â Iâve read so many bed sharing fics where geralt wakes up in the middle of the night/the next morning with jaskier all cuddled up to himâŠ. I just wanna see the role reversal with jaskier waking up first to find that geralt cuddled into him during the night u kno â on Discord, so I blanked out and typed this up in 30 minutes.
CW: small death joke
Jaskier woke up from the first rays of sunshine hitting him in the face, the hazy light coating everything in an orange glow.
His body felt heavy from sleep, all snuggled up under the blanket.
But, as he was slowly starting to realize, that wasnât the only reason his body felt heavy.
There was something warm draped over his legs, pinning him to the mattress and making it almost impossible for him to move.
Slowly, Jaskier turned his head and took in a sharp breath at the sight before him.
Laying there, deeply sunken into slumber, lay Geralt, white hair spread out over the pillow, mouth slightly open and a faint snore coming out of it.Â
It was a rare sight, the Witcher almost always up before Jaskier, or awoken by even the slightest movement, never letting his guard down fully.
The last hunt had been especially draining though, Geralt barely making it out unscathed, and he had all but fallen into bed last night after he had gulped down a bowl of stew at Jaskierâs insistence.
His body had needed the rest, and judging from the depth of his sleep, it still needed a few more hours to recover.
Jaskier had been studying Geralt for a few moments when suddenly, the other man shifted.
That was when the bard finally noticed where that warm feeling was coming from: there was a very big and muscular thigh draped over him - even in the morning light you could see the scars on Geraltâs leg as it was peeking out from underneath the covers.
âThis certainly is new,â Jaskier thought.
Usually, it was him who cuddled up to Geralt during the night, sometimes consciously, but mostly because his body craved the warmth and Geralt radiated so much of it, it felt like he was being pulled towards it.
And so every so often, he woke up pressed to the Witcherâs back, icy fingers clinging to his chest, legs tangled up in each other. It had taken him a few times to notice that Geralt was always awake when it happened, but he still let him proceed, probably out of pity because his weak human body would otherwise freeze to death.
To see Geralt do the same thing deep asleep made Jaskierâs stomach flutter; he barely managed to resist the urge to brush a loose strand of hair out of the Witcherâs face.
He looked so vulnerable and soft and human, nothing like the monster he was constantly made out to be.
Geraltâs mouth twitched and he moved, his entire body now pressed up to Jaskierâs, face hidden in the nook between the bardâs ear and shoulder.
Silver hair ticked his nose, but he didnât care.
All he cared about was this very moment, this subconscious proof of trust for no one else to see but him.
The warmth Geraltâs body emitted spread over to Jaskier, wrapping him up like another blanket, so soft as though it was made from the finest cloth.
He knew that as soon as Geralt woke up, he would jump up and apologize, mumbling something about âIf you tell anyone about this I will kill youâ and âNext time this happens, just wake me up.â
But for now, he was still sleeping, his chest rising and sinking in a steady rhythm.
For now, he felt safe. And Jaskier would keep watch for as long as need be.
Jaskier sniffled. Then, when there was no reaction, sniffled louder.Â
Beside the burbling brook, Geralt continued scraping the drowner guts off of his gambeson, cruelly ignoring Jaskierâs plight.Â
âPerhaps you think I am ascribing your great battle to song,â Jaskier called archly, his quill pausing upon the notebook perched on his knee. âNay, dear friend, I am making my Last Will and Testament.âÂ
âYou caught a chill, Jaskier,â Geralt said measuredly, inspecting his dripping garment.Â
âAnd a fever,â Jaskier drew the camp blanket tighter over his shoulders and shivered. âSoon I shall grow insensible as my brain boils, and lose my voice from the strain-âÂ
Psst can I request sitting in lap hug with Geraskier? đ„ș
23. sitting in lap hug
YES you may! I meant it to be super soft and cuddly and buffskier rights and you know, all that. But then I decided I am very funny so I had to put that in there as well.
Send me a hug prompt?

Baths are a gift from all the deities to witchers. Geralt is not a religious man, but that is how it is. Someone, somewhere decided to give witchers one blessing, and it is hot fucking water in a tub.
This is what runs through Geraltâs mind when he enters the room he and Jaskier are renting for the week.
There is something similar running through Jaskierâs mind, it would seem, because when he looks up at Geralt, a soft smile spreads on his lips.
âNice bath?â he asks, putting his quill down and corking the ink. Curious, he usually writes for at least another hour or two.
Geralt nods and hums agreeably. This innkeeper wasnât stingy with firewood and let Geralt heat the water up to almost boiling, just as he likes it. He feels warm and soft, and quite frankly, spoiled. A rare treat from those someones somewhere.
Geralt means to go past Jaskier and then tuck himself down under the blankets, but as he passes Jaskierâs chair, hands grip his hips and he is pulled down into Jaskierâs lap.
For those who have seen a witcher before, they can attest to their size and in relation to that, the likelihood of them being rather hefty.
This rather sizable and hefty witcher plops down in the bard's lap, completely unprepared for such an attack, and finds himself ensnared by two sneaky bard arms.
Jaskier leans against Geraltâs back, rubbing his cheek against the witcherâs shoulder.
âYour shirt is wet,â Jaskier complains, absolutely not stopping his snuggling.
âMy hair is wet,â Geralt replies matter of factly, trying not to be too tense in Jaskierâs arms. He has no idea what brought this about, this is not something they just do, but he is too content to protest. If he felt soft and warm before, it has nothing on what he feels when Jaskierâs hands splay over his chest and stomach.
âIâm heavy,â Geralt mutters, half-heartedly trying to squirm out of Jaskierâs lap. Heâd rather not, but heâs got an image to keep.
âAnd Iâm strong. Walking all day gives a few perks. Power thighs.â
âIâm pretty sure you say thunder thighs.â
âNot my thighs. They are pure power,â Jaskier says without missing a beat, hugging Geralt tighter to his chest. Witchers donât melt. But Geralt always was a bit different from the others. He relaxes, trusting Jaskier to hold his weight, leaning back just a little and putting his hands on top of Jaskierâs hands.
âPower thighs. Sounds like something a charlatan would try to sell with mediocre success,â Geralt mumbles, and Jaskier huffs a laugh.
âI would buy it.â
âLike I said. With mediocre success.â
âButtwipe.â
They sit in silence for a while, and Geralt canât help but think that the bed has lost some of its appeal. Jaskierâs legs are warm under him, his arms around his chest more comforting than any blanket, and every puff of air against his neck is a reminder that someone actually wants him close.
If he was allowed, he would probably be able to fall asleep like this.
He is not ever telling Jaskier that. Ever.
âShould we turn in early?â Jaskier mumbles, and then muffles a yawn against Geraltâs shoulder blade.
âDonât you have a set to play?â
âMeh, there is always tomorrow. Iâm comfortable.â
Geralt doesnât object, because he too is comfortable. He stands up, Jaskierâs hand slipping to his waist, and then he too stands up. They have two beds in here. They are made up and everything. There is not one single good reason that they should share.
But Geralt takes off his shoes and Jaskier changes to his soft sleeping tunic, and then they slip under the covers of the bed by the window. Geralt likes to face the door, so Jaskier has to climb over him to settle in, and as soon as they both are covered, Jaskierâs arms are around him again.
Only this time, Jaskier rests his forehead against the back of Geraltâs neck, and their legs tangle together.
Deities have given this witcher two gifts. One of them is baths. The other is a bard, snuffling as he falls asleep, holding Geralt close.
âHow about this one?â Jaskier asked, pointing at the brown mare with the white stripe down her face. âShe looks just like the last.â
Geralt frowned at the horse, crossing his arms.
âNo.âÂ
Jaskier reached over the fence, attempting to pet the horse. She regarded his hand suspiciously.Â
âSeriously Geralt, whatâs wrong with her? Sheâs strong, sheâs fast, she even is -â The horse snapped at his hand and he pulled it back with a yelp. âSee? Sheâs even as grumpy as the old Roach. Just the perfect fit for you.â
Geralt grunted in disagreement, scowling at the horse, as if she had personally offended him.Â
âNot her.â
He grabbed Jaskierâs sleeve, pulling him away from the horse and towards another one. Jaskier threw the farmer, who was watching them with in annoyance, an apologetic look. They had been at this for what felt like hours. He couldnât fault the farmer for getting impatient with them.Â
âListen,â Jaskier said, touching Geraltâs arm lightly. âI know this is hard for you. Roach wasâŠDonât tell her I said something nice about her, but she was a good horse. A good friend to you.âÂ
Something twitched in Geraltâs expression.Â
âBut giving her away was the right choice. Sheâll be happy in her old age, munching on all the flowers her heart desires and getting all the pets from Henrykâs children.âÂ
âI know it was right,â Geralt said. âBetter than if she stayed with me and got hurt.â
Strangely, Jaskier got the feeling that Geralt was avoiding his eyes. Jaskier narrowed his eyes at him, scrutinising his carefully blank expression.
His heart stuttered, when he realised what Geralt wasnât saying.Â
âOh.â He swallowed and skipped ahead, so he was standing in front of Geralt, forcing him to look at him. âI want you to know,â he said in a mock-haughty tone, âThat Iâm neither old nor do I lack the sense to run away when thereâs danger. Iâm not going to get hurt by being with you. If anything, Iâd be a danger to myself and society, when Iâm on my own.â He dropped the falsely arrogant tone, becoming more sincere. âIâm not going to leave you, alright?â
âThose - âJaskier squawked, his voice moving up in pitch, â- are laughter lines! Because I just so happen to smile a lot when Iâm around you and thereâs nothing you can do to make me want to stop being with you. So.â He put his hands on his hips. âDonât you worry about where to retire me to. Iâm not leaving. In fact,â He turned around again, hopping onto the fence, âI would really appreciate it if you could finally find a new horse that youâre happy with so we can continue travelling together.â
During his tirade, Geraltâs face softened. He rolled his eyes fondly.Â
âYouâre being an idiot,â Geralt said. He opened the door of the enclosure and walked past Jaskier.
âNaturally.â With a grin, Jaskier hopped down, following Geralt dutifully, as he looked over the horses. He tilted his head. âYou werenât that picky last time. It took you less than an hour to choose your new Roach.â
Jaskier still remembered that day well. He hadnât known Geralt for long then and he was sure Geralt wouldnât have taken him with him to pick a new Roach, if Jaskier hadnât insisted.
âIt was easier then,â Geralt said, mirth in his eyes, âI just picked the one that looked like she wanted to bite you.â
âYou!â Jaskier gasped dramatically. âI knew it! You wanted to use your horse to get rid of me! So what? A biting horse didnât work, so now youâre looking for one that wants to trample me?â
Geralt snorted and shook his head in fond exasperation. âSomething like that.â
âSomething like that,â Jaskier echoed. âGo on then. Tell me what it is youâre looking for in your most precious companion. I can take it.â
Geralt shot him a look out of the corner of his eyes. âI like a companion whoâs quiet.â
âLiar,â Jaskier sing-songed easily.Â
âFine.â Geralt let his eyes wander to a light grey horse, with a mane that might have been white once, if it hadnât rolled around in the dirt before. âI like⊠loyalty. A horse that doesnât just stay with me because she has to but because she learns to like me.â
âWell, thatâs not hard to find,â Jaskier said. âYouâre very likeable. Animals love you. Unless theyâre cats, of course. But Iâve never met a horse who wasnât wrapped around your little finger. What else?â
âI like a horse thatâŠdoesnât mind if I lean against her? Or touch her even when itâs not necessary. She should be affectionate.â
Jaskier nodded along sagely.Â
âPretty,â Geralt said so quietly and quickly that Jaskier wasnât sure he had heard it right.Â
âWhat?â
âI like aâŠa pretty companion.â A bright red tinted the tips of Geraltâs ears and he turned his head away from Jaskier.Â
âOh.â Jaskier fiddled with the hem of his sleeve. âWell, of course. Your companion must be pretty to fit you.â He coughed awkwardly. âSo. Weâre looking for loyalty, open affection and beauty.âÂ
They had reached the muddy horse by now. At the sound of Jaskierâs voice, she lifted her head, ears curiously turned towards him. As soon as Jaskier lifted his hands, her ears turned back and she snapped at him.Â
Immediately, Geralt guided him away, scowling at the horse in disappointment.Â
âWhy not her?â Jaskier asked, nudging Geralt playfully, âShe certainly has that willingness to trample me.â
âNot her,â Geralt said simply. He nudged Jaskier right back, with far more strength than Jaskier had used. It almost sent Jaskier tumbling into a pile of horse droppings. If it wasnât for Geraltâs hand shooting out and catching him, Jaskier surely would have ruined his new doublet. It would have been a shame. He had bought it specifically to make a good impression on the new Roach.Â
That is, Jaskier was saved by Geraltâs hand and by something nudging his back until he was standing upright again. He turned around to see a light brown horse look at him curiously.Â
âOh.â Jaskier lifted his hand to let her snuffle it. âHello there.â
He could feel Geraltâs eyes on him, as he scratched the mare between her ears. She snorted a gust of warm breath into his face happily.
âYouâre a pretty one,â Jaskier said, laughing in delight, as the horseâs soft nose snuffled at his hair. âAnd affectionate! Helpful too. Helpfulness is almost the same as loyalty, wouldnât you say, Geralt?â
He turned his head to find Geralt looking at him with softness in his eyes.
âToo bad sheâs keen on helping me instead of trampling me. She wouldnât be of much use in helping you get rid of me. She likes me too much.â
As if to prove him right, the horse shoved him again, making him stumble straight into Geraltâs arms. Geralt caught him instantly. When Jaskier looked up, Geraltâs face was but a handâs breadth away from his. Jaskierâs heart skipped a beat, when he noticed a light red dusting Geraltâs cheeks.Â
âSheâs perfect,â Geralt said, one hand rubbing a small circle into Jaskierâs arm, while he reached out his other hand to pet the horse. âThis is our new Roach.â

âGeralt,â Jaskier tries, feeling more uncertain by the second, âthis is weird even for you, my tight-lipped friend.â
The witcher considers this for only half a second. Then he purrs, low and loud, and Jaskier knows theyâre really fucked.
--
The cottage is positively idyllic, instantly cementing itself in Jaskierâs brain as a place he will no doubt pen many cozy odes to. As his witcher carefully inspects the stables, the bard preens over the sugary snow that sparkles as it gathers on the cabinâs thatched rooftop.
He wishes they could stay here instead of stumbling onwards to their real destination. Kaer Morhen might be mythical but Geralt refuses to brave the Killer until the ground is white as his hair, so heâs led them to this lovely midpoint instead. And Jaskier falls in love as he always doesâ instantly, deeply, and without warning. âGeralt, Geralt, Geralt,â he coos, touching the holly wreath hanging off a nail in the door, âwho did you fuck to gain the use of this place?â
No answer comes even though Jaskier knows that Geraltâs extranatural hearing can certainly pick his voice up by now. He tries the handle and finds it unlocked, and the creak of the old cabin door is almost drowned out by Jaskierâs gasp when he sees its contents.
The inns they frequent are, as a rule, piss-poor. This serves not only as a descriptor of their hospitality and food and service, but the smell. Since travelling alongside a witcher Jaskier has toured the worst imaginable temporary dwellings on the Continent.
In comparison, this cottage is a temple. There are no rats or ghoulish imps squeaking along the floorboardsâ Jaskier steps inside and his boots land on thick, clean, warm rugs; every inch of the place is covered in soft fabrics or warm animal hides. The walls are peppered not with bloodstains but with bundles of sage and rosemary, tied with string and hung like tinsel.
Jaskier gasps again when he sees the bookshelf, and a third time when he sees the door leading into the kitchenâ a kitchen larger than his entire office and lodging space at Oxenfurt. âThis is no cottage,â he declares, thrilled. âItâs a fucking castle! Iâm never leaving, Iâm moving in, fuck Kaer Morhen to hell and back!â
âWe only have it for the night,â deadpans his favourite wet blanket from the door. âDonât get ahead of yourself.â Jaskier spins to see Geralt removing his shoes, which is in itself evidence enough that the pair of them have stepped through a snowy fairy circle into some dreamland, where witchers act with decorum and bards get to keep them all to themselves in cozy picturesque cottages.
Jaskier kicks off his own shoes and strips out of his jacket, at which point the ever-predictable Geralt averts his heterosexual eyes. So much for dreamland. The thick walls of the cabin provide welcome relief from the winter weather outside but itâs still chilly, so he crosses to the fireplace and carefully moves a few logs into its metal jaws. As he does, he repeats his sentiments from outside, âWell, you must have done something awfully good for someone very nice to get us a place like this, even just for the night. What was it? Spin me the tale while I get the fire going.â
With a completely unnecessary hum of amusement, Geralt comes up behind Jaskier and moves him aside. âIf I wait for you to do it, weâll freeze before we make it through the night.â Jaskier harrumphs, but itâs mostly for showâ Igni will start a fire faster than any kindling anyway. Regardless, the witcher softens. âWhy donât you go find us some wine?â
âAm I your bar wench now?â Geralt doesnât blink until Jaskierâs smile twists into something suggestive, and then he frowns and kneels before the fireplace. âVery well, love,â Jaskier teases, putting on a thick Skelligen accent that makes Geraltâs shoulders go tense for some reason. âIâll go see about finding something to wet your whistle, while you stay here and do all the dirty work.â
The witcher mumbles something undoubtedly rude but Jaskier is already out of earshot, eager to explore more of the gorgeous cottage. To his delight he discovers that the enormous kitchen is stocked with more than enough to feed them for the night. Theyâll be able to pack provisions for the road too; Jaskier imagines the witchers at Kaer Morhen will greet him more kindly when he comes bearing rare gifts like tins of Zerrikanian spices and jars of honey.
He obviously does not take full advantage of their mysterious hostâs generosity, but Geralt did instruct him to find them something to drink, so thatâs exactly what Jaskier does. Heâs no chef, and he could name the notes in any tune but would struggle to find a better descriptor for wine than its colour. But he remembers the gist of an old family recipe that reared its head every winter solstice like clockwork, and he does his best to recreate it.
By the time Jaskier is done preparing his concoction Geralt has managed to start a perfect fire, light and warmth curling into every corner of the cabin and making it even lovelier. Jaskier returns to pleasant, soft crackling, and he hums cheerfully. Then Geralt reaches for the pot in his hands as if he means to drink from it like a bowl of broth, and Jaskier snatches it out of his reach, tutting. âItâs not ready yet!â
âSmells ready,â Geralt shrugs. âWhat is it?â
âA Lettenhove heirloom that carried the noble family through many a politically disastrous winter gathering. Just sit back.â Jaskier beams. âI promise itâs worth the wait!â
Sighing, Geralt relents and sits back on the rug. Even in a soft, safe place like this he looks hopelessly tense, shoulders raised to his ears like a bloodhound's haunches. Or a wolfâsâ now thereâs a funny thought.
Jaskier reclines too and watches Geralt as he so often does, squinting at the hard line of the witcherâs back. He wishes, suddenly and nonsensically, that he could offer the man a backrub or any other form of comfort. Then his predictable mind leaps to other forms of comfort, and how heâd like to treat Geraltâs body, lay him out in the firelight like this. The bard gulps imagining it, palms wrapped tightly around his knees to keep himself from doing something stupid.
âYour thoughts are so loud,â Geralt speaks up, surprising Jaskier into forgetting his scandalous train of thought. Then he flushes with embarrassed heat. Could Geralt really hear his thoughts? Definitely not, because he would have brought up a lot of Jaskierâs inner shame by now. The witcher continues, âEven here you canât relax.â
âIâm very relaxed,â Jaskier scoffs, fingers pressing into his calves so tightly it nearly hurts. Then he releases them, launching forward to grab the simmering drink insteadâ and in the process nearly burning his wrists. Geralt tries to help him but Jaskier bats him off, unhooking the handles of the pot and standing with it. âSoon weâll have this, and weâll both be relaxed, alright?â
âFor someone who complains about magic and witches all the time,â Geralt muses in that stupid dry tone that means heâs about to say something he considers hilarious, âyouâve certainly brewed us a delicious potion, Jaskier. Here, let me carry your cauldron,â and he stands too, taking the handles out of Jaskierâs palms.
âYou are not funny,â Jaskier informs him hotly, catching sight of the pleased smirk on Geraltâs face before he turns into the kitchen. Jaskier follows him, resisting the childish urge to kick at his ankles. âStop trying to tell jokes, and donât knock my beautiful creation before you try it. Here, youâll have to sieve it through hereâ!â
They end up pouring it together into a large tin pitcher, Jaskier holding the receptacle as Geralt tips the pot. For all Geraltâs snark Jaskier has to agree that it smells delicious, and he deeply inhales the steam rising from the drink as Geralt dumps out the last of it. He opens his eyes and catches his witcher doing the same, eyelids fluttering as he breathes in the fragrance.
Usually Jaskier pities Geralt for his enhanced sense of smell when he has to wade through selkiemore guts or stagnant pools of drowner shit only to collect a few measly orens. But right now he envies the man his mutation, dreamily wondering what complexities Geralt might be able to divine from the cocktail. A little too quickly, Jaskier asks, swaying forward, âCan you guess the ingredients?â
âHmm.â Geraltâs eyes openâ theyâre golden as always but more yellow than the muddled amber drink. His pupils are slightly more dilated than usual, making the ring of gold even brighter while his gaze is dark. He surprises Jaskier by playing along, tilting his head to the side and considering the smells. âApple, orange⊠the peels too. And another sour fruit⊠a berry?â
âLots of them,â Jaskier confirms, nodding.
âI can smell the spices too.â Geraltâs nostrils flare, and Jaskier averts his eyes. Then he has to take a long hard think about why he finds Geralt flaring his nostrils attractive. This has gone far enoughâ gods forbid Geralt actually figure out the cause of all Jaskierâs loud thoughts. Heâd be heading for the hills faster than the bard could say âcinnamon!â
But before Jaskier can end their half-flirtatious game or turn away, Geraltâs hands are on his, pulling the warm drink out of his grip. âSmelling isnât enough,â he continues. âI have to taste it to really get to the bottom of this. Witcher tongues are very sensitive, you know.â
âI didnât,â replies Jaskier as meekly as he possibly can, to avoid begging Geralt to shove his tongue as far as possible down his throat.
âYeah, so hang on,â Geralt grins, which is the first clue that heâs been teasing Jaskier this whole time. But Jaskier canât find it in himself to be irritated, not when Geralt lifts the very heavy pitcher with one broad hand and takes a long drink right from its lip. Jaskier watches his arm flex and his throat bob and he thinks that perhaps he had better retreat to the room with the fire, now, immediately, drink or no drink.
As he steps away from Geralt, Jaskier jokes mildly, âTaste that last ingredient yet?â But the witcher, bafflingly, sets the pitcher down on the counter without a word. He wipes his mouth roughly with the back of his hand and exhales, pushing the cocktail towards Jaskier. â⊠Right. Thanks. Uh, seeing as Iâm neither blessed with mutant strength nor am I a philistine, Iâm going to pour this into a cup and sip it slowly in front of the fire.â
Geralt sniffs, nodding as he steps forward. For a euphoric and horrific moment Jaskier thinks the man intends to hug him, but his arm slides around Jaskier only to reach for an empty mug on the shelf. He places it on the counter between them and does not move away, even as Jaskier clears his throat. Not even when Jaskier pokes his lean stomach with the rim of the mug.
When Jaskier moves back Geralt doesnât step to follow him, just watching him closely. âItâs rum,â Jaskier bleats, fear starting to overtake the arousal he always associates with Geralt. âItâs only rum, thatâs the last ingredient. Why are you looking at me like that?â
He pours a drink and sips it nervously, but it doesnât taste of any strange poison that would make someoneâs brain uncoil. It tastes warm and soothing and familiarly nostalgic. As soon as heâs set his cup down Geralt, who hasnât taken his eyes off Jaskier since the second he finished his drink, steps forward to crowd into his space again.
âGeralt,â Jaskier tries, feeling more uncertain by the second, âthis is weird even for you, my tight-lipped friend.â
The witcher considers this for only half a second. Then he purrs, low and loud, and Jaskier knows theyâre really fucked. He gapes, already wracking his brains for what to do next. There should be an ample supply of White Honey in Roachâs saddlebags to neutralize any accidental toxic effects from the potion, but what if it isnât the drink at all? What if something in this perfect, cozy cottage wormed its evil way into Geraltâs brain, robbing him of his ability to think?
Flummoxed, Jaskier turns on his heel, surveying the kitchen for any potential threats. But nothing presents any immediate evidence. He only smells the sweet fruit from their drink, undercut by thick, warm spices, and he only hears the fire crackling in the other room. And then, without warning, broad hands wrap around his torso and scoop him up into the strongest embrace heâs ever felt.
Jaskier lets out a very unbecoming squawk but Geralt doesnât care, adjusting his grip until Jaskier is situated firmly against his chest. âGeralt, youâre not yourself!â Jaskier pounds weakly on the armour covering his chest like a bird trying to peck its way through brick. Embarrassed and confounded and helplessly aroused, he demands, âPut me down this instant!â
This instruction, at least, seems to reach Geraltâs mind. He nods, nuzzling his chin against Jaskierâs hair and forehead protectively. It strikes up a flare of emotion in the bardâs chest that he would be hard-pressed to name, even though heâs written hundreds of ballads trying to capture this very feeling.
The blush doesnât fade from his face as Geralt carries him to the carpet, pink high and bright on his cheekbones as the witcher settles down and seats Jaskier firmly in his lap. Jaskier makes very little effort to move, warmed by the fire and bewildered by his friendâs obvious possession. Geralt reaches around them to gather all the furs and rugs and blankets into a nest, never letting his grip on Jaskier loosen.
Jaskier sighs, resigning himself to the sweat that starts to creep down his neck and brow. Maybe Geralt will sweat out this bizarre infection. âIf youâve been entered by a vengeful, cuddly spirit,â Jaskier warns, âI will not hesitate to stab you with your own silver. I know you can take it. Youâll heal right up, and weâll laugh about this in the morning. Or I will, anyway.â
âNo one⊠entered,â Geralt mumbles. âNot how that works.â Then his hand moves, faster than Jaskier could stop it, to stroke the bardâs hair in a display of what could only be called affection. âJust feels good.â
âI can count on one hand the number of times youâve told me about how you feel,â scoffs Jaskier, slightly awed. Geralt nuzzles against the side of his throat; his lips ghost over the skin there, and Jaskier shudders. âUm. Well. What feels good?â
âYou,â comes the instant response, a low rumble in the witcherâs chest that makes Jaskier tremble too. He couldnât possibly bolt for the door even if he wanted to; Geraltâs hand is still atop his head, and his mouth is still at Jaskierâs neck. âYou feel good,â he mumbles, and his lips trace the words over bare, warm skin.
Jaskier jumps, stammering, âGeralt, I think I poisoned you somehow! I mustâve, because,â and he falls silent as the witcherâs clever fangs drag gently over his neck, followed abruptly by his soothing, quick tongue. Jaskier babbles something that isnât Common but isnât quite any other language either, forgetting his very pressing concerns as Geralt noses under his jawline.
âLove it when you sing,â Geralt mutters. âSing more for me.â
Jaskier tears away from him, heart beating at a rabbitâs pace. âOh, now I know weâre in trouble,â he exclaims, twisting in Geraltâs lap to fully face him. He ends up straddling the witcher under their pile of furs. Geralt looks briefly disappointed and chided, but as Jaskier settles atop him again, his hands happily wind around the bard as his expression sinks into that satisfied, vacant haze once more. Undeterred, Jaskier demands, âWhat are you allergic to?â
âNothing,â Geralt puffs his chest up proudly. The gesture is so endearing and silly that Jaskier can nearly ignore the hands creeping up his back, trying to ruck up his shirtâ as it is, he reaches behind him to smack them out of the way, and Geralt fucking whines. âNothing! Iâm⊠immune. To everything.â
âEverything except rum, apparently,â Jaskier snorts, grabbing Geraltâs wrists to bring them back into view. This fails tremendously as the witcher just loops his arms over Jaskier's shoulders like theyâre dancing. Geralt moves forward to softly breathe against his already flushed cheek, kissing the hollow of it and smiling. So as not to lose his mind, Jaskier blurts, âFucking hell, Geralt, Iâve never seen your tolerance get this low. I thought witchers were heavyweights!â
âWe are,â exhales Geralt with pride. He kisses the corner of Jaskierâs mouth. ââm not drunk. Just feel good.â
Jaskier loses track of what heâs supposed to say next, lost in the heady weight of Geraltâs eyes on him, Geraltâs lips lingering only a brush away from his own. It would be so easy to give in. He swallows thickly. âNot drunk, my arse. Whatâs gotten into you, then? The cranberries? The cinnamon?â
âOh,â says Geralt, quiet and astonished. He pulls away, golden eyes searching Jaskierâsâ his pupils are dilated to an almost unreal degree. âYou gave me cinnamon.â
Jaskier frowns, wiping away sweat from his brow. â⊠Should I not have?â
âI should've smelled it,â Geralt continues, sounding more like himself. When he shakes his head the movement is still slowed, and he has yet to pull his hands away from Jaskier or push the bard out of his lap. âCinnamon makes witchers feel nice. Donât know why. Some weird alchemy thing. Itâs banned from Kaer Morhen, has been for years.â He grunts the words out even less generously than usual, seeming to struggle with finding the right phrasing.
Jaskier squints at him. âSo it gets you high.â
âNot like fisstech.â
âLike catnip.â
âIâm not a cat,â protests Geralt, obviously growing annoyed. Jaskier doesnât hold back his grin, reaching up to pet Geraltâs hair. Itâs half a joke and half meant to comfort the witcher; if he really is high, this whole ordeal might be very stressful.
As soon as Jaskierâs fingertips collide with Geraltâs scalp and he starts running them through the witcherâs white, soft hair, Geralt shifts under him. Before Jaskier knows it theyâre movingâ or rather, Geralt is moving him, gripping him by the shoulders and tangling their legs together. Geralt rolls over until he has Jaskier pinned between his body and the warm carpet.
Their hips press together as do their stomachs and chests, and Jaskier has to move slightly to accommodate the weight of a stoned, boneless witcher. Heâs dreamt of this happening but never like thisâ he wants to laugh, but also to shove Geralt off and run.
Then the man burrows his face between Jaskierâs jaw and shoulder, licking a stripe along his neck. Jaskier squirms; if there was air in his lungs, heâd be chuckling. So much for not being a cat. He has to focus on the absurd hilarity of this situation, or else a very pressing problem is going to arise between them. Jaskier teases, breathless, âWhat do you call that?â
But speaking is a mistake when Geraltâs mouth is still hot, lingering over his throat. He laves over the same area of skin and Jaskier bites back a moan. Geralt rises up onto his elbows but it only takes the tiniest edge off, removing hardly any tension at allâ his pelvis is still pressed firmly against Jaskierâs, and now his messy hair hangs down around his face like a fine silver curtain, only making him look more beautiful in the firelight.
âWanna touch you,â Geralt says, the answer to a question that Jaskier had forgot heâd asked. He might be able to take the proposition more seriously if not for those dark, wide pupils nearly eclipsing the rest of Geraltâs interested eyes. âYou feel so warm, and good. Youâre so precious, I never want to let you go, youâre⊠youâre so good to me. Thank you for letting me have you.â
Something bubbles up in Jaskierâs chest. Heartbreak, or gas. He dismisses it, scorning Geraltâs heartfelt, drug-fueled confession: âI donât recall giving you permission to have me.â As if the permission wasnât readily given years and years ago, and the license isnât renewed every time Geralt glances his way.
But Geralt just shakes his head, growling in frustration. âNot what I meant. I meant, thank you for⊠being here. Mine.â
âYours,â Jaskier echoes, hollowed out by the weight of that word. Oh, this whole thing is certainly going to bite him in the ass in a few hours. âRight. Do you even know who I am right now?â
Geraltâs reply is instant and clear, sounding more lucid than all the other sweet slurred nothings heâs shared. âYes, Jaskier,â he says, nearly sing-song. âOf course, Jaskier. I love you, stupid Jaskier.â
And before stupid Jaskier can do little more than stare, Geralt ducks back down to kiss the side of his neck again, this time pressing his lips to it almost chastely.
So as not to implode, Jaskier pats Geraltâs hip with an open palm. He tells the witcher, voice more level than itâs ever been, âIâm going to have some more punch, as I clearly need to catch up,â and thatâs all the warning he offers before moving Geralt off of him. Despite the manâs considerable weight itâs an easier task than Jaskier had assumed, and he manages it without much awkwardness.
He leaves Geralt propped up by the fire, beelining for the kitchen but passing the pitcher of rum entirely. His fingers tremble as he unlatches the back door but itâs nothing compared to the panic sitting high in his chest. Jaskier succeeds in unlocking it and slipping out into the yard but he fails to fully contain the sob that escapes him, and his hand shoots up to cover his mouth. If the gods are feeling grateful tonight, hopefully Geralt wonât have heard that.
Itâs all too much. Even in his wildest dreams Geralt would never act so openly on any hidden feelings, and for him to confess while leaning over Jaskier, their faces only a few breaths apart⊠Jaskier blinks against the cold winter air, toes curling in his socks and knees shaking as he tries not to cry.
Most concerningly, neither the storm of panic in his head and heart nor the falling snow that bites at his bare ankles have stopped his arousal. Jaskierâs eyelids flutter closed as he shuts out the picturesque evening, leaning against the door to the cottage. His hand that isnât covering his mouth drifts down to press against his very hard erection, and even through layers of clothing he jumps at the touch.
He could easily jerk off out here; hell, heâs done it in worse places. Jaskier exhales into his palm and runs his thumb over the outline of his cock. He recalls what it felt like to have Geraltâs full weight pressed against him, and that low, growly voice calling him precious and good.
Were the circumstances right and his friend in his right mind, Jaskier would gladly lie back and let Geralt rut against him or suck on his neck. His hand cupped over his mouth slips down to cover his throat and he accidentally groansâ the night air swallows up the noise, but he still feels the spectre of shame hanging over him.
After taking another moment to compose himself Jaskier does the right thing. Itâs easy enough to find the right vial in Roachâs saddlebags, and he stumbles back into the house on nearly frozen feet, but at least he feels good about his choice. âHere, Geralt,â he calls out, shaking the snow off his shoulders. âHey. Drink some of this.â
Jaskier knows heâs made the right choice when Geralt hardly glances at the potion before downing it in one goâ in this state, anyone could have talked the witcher into anything. He watches Geralt closely as the White Honey takes effectâ itâs mostly visible in his eyes at first, but then the easy, languid haze drains from his posture. Soon heâs sitting straight-backed in front of the fire, even more consternated than usual.
When Geralt blinks, the amber ring of his irises is wide and stark as ever. He stares at the vial with a slight frown. âWell, that isnât rum.â
âNo, I thought it best not to let it get too far,â says Jaskier. Geraltâs gaze snaps over to him, serious as ever. No one would believe that moments ago heâd been pressing soft kisses into the bardâs neckâ not even with the slight rasp of pinkness along Jaskierâs throat to prove it. âUh. How do you feel?â
Geralt stays silent. It seems his brief moment of candour faded away with the cinnamon buzzâ not a surprise at all.
Nervous, Jaskier tries, âHow much do you remember?â
At that, Geralt glances away, obviously avoiding his gaze.
Taking pity on his friend, Jaskier turns away. âWhy donât we put this whole thing behind us?â Itâs easy enough to adopt a polite, carefree tone. âIâll make us another drink, free of cinnamon!â
His friend doesnât reply and Jaskier doesnât even want to begin to bridge the sudden gap between them. Better to just ignore it. He returns to the kitchen again but doesnât flee this time, leaning heavily against the counter instead. Snow whips around outside the window and Jaskier watches, hoping the swirling, turbulent weather will calm his still frenzied, panicking heart.
From behind him, he hears, âIâm sorry I called you stupid.â
The words take so long to sink in properly that by the time Jaskier has spun around, Geralt is standing in the entrance to the kitchen, shoulders leaning against the frame. He looks every bit as apologetic as he sounds, which means that Jaskier probably didnât hallucinate that bizarre statement, and that at some point Geralt will expect him to address it. Jaskier stares. Geralt doesnât move away, watching him closely. Waiting for a response.
âWell, youâre not stupid,â Geralt informs him. It would sound patronizing if not for the vulnerable look on his face, jaw loose and shoulders tight. Jaskier wonders how many conversations like this Geralt has willingly started over the course of his life. Over all the decades that their friendship has spanned, Jaskier canât think of a single one. The witcher continues, âYou're very smart.â
âListen,â Jaskier splutters, âI just heard you say you loved me for the first timeâ well, ever! There are bigger fish to fry. Youâ you, you kissed me!â
âI would like to do it again if youâd let me,â Geralt replies so evenly that it sounds like he could be talking about a business arrangement, not a fucking kiss. But then he crosses the kitchen in only a few steps to pull Jaskier close and push him back until his hip collides with the counter.
Geralt doesnât move away, weight pressed to every part of him just like before. They arenât in front of the fire, nor are there half a dozen soft furs hung over their shoulders. But Jaskier still burns where Geralt touched him, and burns under the weight of his friendâs questioning, hungry gaze.
Before moving in to kiss him, Geralt stops just shy. They trade air and Jaskier stares into Geraltâs eyesâ dark with want, now, not addled by any substance except chemical attraction. There is no mistaking the look on his witcherâs face, and yet, paralyzed by anxiety that was nowhere to be found by the fire, Geralt hesitates. âWill you let me?â
âWhat kind of a question is that, stupid Geralt,â laughs Jaskier, pressing his laugh into Geraltâs mouth until theyâre smiling against each other. They kiss soundly, unhurried but eager. Geralt doesnât reach out to touch again, too consumed by Jaskierâs lips on his and kissing back. And he is, to Jaskierâs delight, an excellent kisser.
They break only for air and then Geralt kisses him again, suddenly impatient as before. An idea strikes Jaskier; they arenât in Kaer Morhen yet, so they may as well take advantage of the resources at their disposal. As they kiss he reaches over to dip two fingers into the tin of Zerrikanian cinnamon, pinching a small amount of the sweet spice between his fingertips.
Before he can second-guess the decision he brushes his hand along the expanse of his own throat, leaving a streak of brown cinnamon. The dust spills over his shirt but itâs worth it when Geralt pulls away and his nostrils instantly flare at the scent. Relishing the look on his face, Jaskier says with a smile, âWell, witcher. Make me sing.â
For @tolkiengenweek day 4, loosely based on prompts âwork and craftâ and âlanguageâ but this was mostly an excuse to write more of the feral dirt baby.Â

âWhere is Estel?â
Elrond had come out to the terrace where Erestor was supposed to be helping Estel with his lettering only to find Erestor glowering at a book while he sat opposite a very empty chair.
Erestor, without looking up at him, merely tapped the scrap practice paper in front of Estelâs vacant seat.
Frowning, Elrond picked up the sheet and read the childish, jumbled lettering. There, scrawled five times beneath the mock sentence Erestor had given him to practice his penmanship with, was:
theyâd been in the market, stocking up on supplies, and someone had taken his hand. he looked in surprise to geralt.
the witcher looked right back at him, grinning quite like a cat thatâd gotten the cream.
jaskier felt his heart skip a beat, and with the way the witcherâs grin widened, heâd heard it and oh⊠he looked so happy jaskier couldâve cried.
he didnt.
he merely allowed himself to be curled into geraltâs side and hummed to himself for the rest of the shopping trip.
**
then, thereâd been the mageâs tower.
after the dust cleared and jaskier found his way to where geralt had been, geralt had immediately twined their fingers together for the descent back to their camp.
jaskier took both of his hands and kissed his bruised, bloody knuckles.
he was whole.
he was safe.
they had one more day of this.
***
itâd become second nature for jaskier to take geraltâs hand the second it was offered.
walking up rough terrain? geralt was there.
weaving through a crowded pub? geralt was there.
after a hunt, even when jaskier followed him when explicitly asked not to? geralt was there, holding both of his hands in a white-knuckled grip.
it wasnât until jaskier didnât take geraltâs hand right away that he noticed.
jaskier had been considering the purchase of a sweet treat for the road when geraltâs hand appeared in his periphery.
âjust a moment, dear,â jaskier murmured. he took a minimal step to the side to allow a little boy to peer at the bakerâs wares as well, all big brown eyes and toustled hair and knobbly knees.
geraltâs fingers waggled impatiently as the boyâs mum caught up to him.
âwhatâd i tell you about holding my hand in the market?â the mum chided.
geraltâs fingers stopped wiggling.
a realisation dawned upon the bard.
silently, he turned to look at the witcher with a frown. geralt, still holding his hand out, tried his best to look innocent, but jaskier knew that was when the man was the most guilty.
âi will have one honey cake please.â jaskier asked the baker sweetly.
geralt hissed through his teeth and put his hand down.
jaskier ate his honey cake in peace and strolled lackadaisically back toward the inn.
âiââ geralt tried at one point, holding both of his traitorous hands to the sky.
âah-ah!â jaskier said. âno words. no.â
âbut what if i just wanted to hold your hand?â geralt rebutted.
jaskier took another bite of his honey cake and fixed geralt with The Look. not just any look, mind. The Look.
geralt pouted at him, complete with crossed arms and a boo lip.
âi also didnât want you wandering off,â geralt admitted tersely.
âbut mostly wanted to hold my hand?â jaskier asked.
geralt nodded.
âwell, i suppose,â jaskier drawled, huffing a sigh. he finished his cake and daintily wiped his fingers on his handkerchief before accepting geraltâs proffered hand. âbut iâm not done shopping.â
if geralt wanted to hold hands, oh, theyâd hold hands. the whole way to the tailor.
oh if you still doing the h/c prompts what about geraskier with â you need to distract me. do something, anything. â
Itâs the quiet that worries Geralt. Jaskier is dramatic about everything from the rain ruining his hair to spilling a drop of ale on his doublet. He once stubbed his toe and yowled so loudly that Geralt came sprinting back to their campsite, convinced that the bard had just been disemboweled by some creature. So the fact that Jaskier has barely said a word since they got to Yenneferâs cottage and is just sitting there, staring at the wall, seems all wrong.
âHeâs lucky he didnât lose the foot,â Yennefer says, examining the wound on Jaskierâs leg. âWhat did this?â
âManticore,â Geralt grits out. If heâs just been a little faster⊠He shakes the thought away. He can replay the battle in his mind and figure out where he went wrong later, once Jaskier is well. âCan you help him?â
Yennefer gives him a look that indicates the answer to that question is so obvious that she wonât deign to answer it. âYou took him to another healer. Who?â
âKatrine of Gulet.â
âSheâs a charlatan.â
âWell, I know that now.â
âYou should have brought him straight to me.â
âShe was closer.â
Jaskier cracks a smile, though itâs not very convincing. âIf youâre not careful, Yennefer, Iâm going to start thinking you care.â
âHardly.â Yennefer sniffs. âBut if you die in my sickroom, Iâll never get the stench out.â
Geralt ignores their sniping. âYenn, can you fix this?â
She must see the worry in his eyes, because she softens. âOf course, Geralt.â To Jaskier, she adds, âI need to undo Katrineâs shoddy healing job before I heal the wound. Itâs going to be excruciating and because of the magic involved, I need you to be conscious.â
Jaskier swallows hard. âAre you sure youâre not just looking for an excuse to torture me?â
âIf I was, I would be much more creative than this.â Yennefer glances at Geralt. âYouâll need to hold him still.â
Geralt nods and slips behind Jaskier, wrapping his arms around the bardâs torso and bracketing Jaskierâs thighs with his. The fact that his bard doesnât make a single innuendo-laden comment is more worrying than anything thatâs happened since Jaskier was injured.
âAre you ready?â Yennefer asks Jaskier, her voice more gentle than Geralt has ever heard directed at the bard. âThe longer I delay, the worse it will be.â
Jaskier nods, face ghostly pale. âDo your worst, witch.â
Yennefer puts her hand over the wound and Geraltâs medallion starts to vibrate. Jaskier makes a strangled noise and Geralt tightens his hold on him, putting one hand over Jaskierâs chest to steady him.
âOh, fuck,â Jaskier hisses through his teeth. âYennefer, I thought we were becoming friends.â
âWeâve barely started.â Yenneferâs eyes donât leave Jaskierâs leg. The leg twitches and she snaps, âJaskier, donât move.â
âIâm trying!â
âTry harder. Undoing someone elseâs healing is a delicate process.â
âIt doesnât feel delicate.â
âDo you think you could do better, bardling?â
âGeralt.â Jaskierâs hands scrabble at the arm locked around his chest. âDistract me. Do something. Anything. Talk to me.â
âUm.â Geraltâs mind goes blank. When Jaskier lets out a pained cry, he forces himself to speak. âShit weather weâre having, huh?â
Yennefer snorts inelegantly and Jaskier twists around to stare at him.
âThe weather?â Jaskier squawks. âGeralt, weâve known each other for twenty years and have been lovers for ten, and the only thing you can think to talk to me about is the weather?â
Geralt shrugs. âIsnât that what humans talk to each other about when they need a topic of conversation?â
âOnly when theyâre boring.â
âYou could talk to him about politics,â Yennefer says dryly.
âNobles are assholes,â Geralt says. âThatâs all I have to say about politics.â
âExcuse me, Iâm a noble!â Jaskierâs mouth opens in a little oh of outrage.
âHe said what he said, bardling.â Yenneferâs lips curl in amusement.
Jaskier looks between them. âYouâre both horrible! Here I am, on my deathbedââ
âNot a deathbed, Jask.â
âIt better not be a deathbed, bardling. I like this cottage. Iâll not have your wraith haunting it.â
Jaskier jabs a finger at her. âI will haunt you wherever you go, Yennefer of Vengerberg.â
âThatâs not how wraiths work,â Geralt says, very tiredly.
âIf anyoneâs going to figure out how to make wraiths worse than they already are, itâs your bard,â Yennefer says.
âWorse!â Jaskier squawks. âLike I wouldnât improve this witchâs lair of yours with my sunny, upbeat presence? Or are you worried that I wouldnât fit in with the bubbling cauldrons and skulls of innocents lining yourââ
âItâs not your wedding day, Jaskier.â Geralt sighs, exasperated. âEven if Yenn let you die, which she wonât, you wouldnât turn into a wraith.â
âWell, we can fix that,â Jaskier says with the worrying grin of someone who just came up with a brilliant plan. âGeralt, we need to get married immediately so that I can haunt Yennefer.â
Geralt stares at his lover in disbelief. âYou want me to marry you so you canât haunt Yennefer?â
âOh.â Jaskier frowns at him. âWould you prefer me haunt you?â
âYouâre not going to haunt anyone, because youâre not dying.â
âBut if I was dying, would you want me to haunt you?â
âNo, Jaskier.â Geralt would very much like to rub his forehead, but that would mean letting go of Jaskier. Besides, witchers donât get headaches. âI donât want you to haunt anyone, because if you did die, which youâre not going to today, Iâd rather you move on peacefully.â
âBut if I did have to haunt you, like say I was killed by a cursed blade and my soul forced to wander for all eternityââ
Geralt knows heâs not getting out of this without giving Jaskier an answer. âThen I guess if you had to haunt anyone, it could be me.â
Jaskier flutters his eyelashes at him. âI would be honored, dear heart.â
âIâm done.â Yennefer steps back from the bed, wiping her hands on her skirts.
Geralt and Jaskier both turn to blink down at Jaskierâs leg in surprise. The leg sports no sign of injury but a thin, raised scar.
âDone already?â Jaskier asks.
âYouâll need to be careful walking on it for a few days,â Yennefer says. âBut you should be good as new in a week. Regrettably, the only thing I could fix today was your leg. Your personality is unchanged.â
Jaskier makes a face at her, running a hand over the scar. âThat wasnât nearly as bad as you said it would be, Yennefer. I barely felt a thing.â
Yennefer and Geralt exchange exasperated looks.
âIâm exhausted.â Jaskier sags back against Geralt, letting his head loll against his shoulder. âAll that being stoic was exhausting, Geralt. I donât know how you do it all the time.â
Geralt smiles into his bardâs sweaty hair and holds him close.

ââfucking winter and its wintery fuckingâ cold as balls, ice frozenââ
âJask?â
ââgood for nothingâ oh.â His tossing stops. The ground is so fucking cold. âSorry, did I wake you?â
One golden eye peers at him. He would say Geralt looked annoyed, but he canât see most of his face, tucked as it is under his cloak, so he chooses to interpret it as friendly concern. âYour muttering did.â
Jaskier smiles sheepishly at him, even though Geralt probably canât see him either, with his scarf tied around his neck and covering most of his face. âSorry. Just...â
âCanât sleep?â
Jaskier shakes his head. Itâs their fifth year on the Path together, the first one Geraltâs invited him along to spend the winter at Kaer Morhen with him â and Jaskierâs excited, really, but sleeping on the forest floor with a thin bedroll and definitely not enough blankets kind of dampens his spirits a little.
Theyâve laid their bedrolls side by side, the fire keeping their feet warm, but still Jaskier canât fend off the chill thatâs seeped into his bones. He would blame it on his frilly, beautifully impractical clothing, with its soft but thin fabrics, with its stunning trim but no insulation, but if he did, heâd basically be agreeing with Geralt, and he canât have that. Not even in the privacy of his own mind.
(He still hasnât ruled out the possibility that Witchers are mind-readers). (Geralt is awfully quiet whenever Jaskier brings it up, and, well, one can never be too careful).
So heâs been tossing and turning and singing lullabies to himself in a feeble attempt of finally succumbing to a warm, deep sleep. Not that itâs worked, anyway.
The single golden eye looks considering, now.
âWhaâ?â Jaskier manages before Geralt stands up, the bare skin under his sleep shirt immediately reacting to the cold air of the forest and erupting in gooseflesh.
Then, a blanket is being tossed to his face.
(It smells like horse).
âThere,â says Geralt, not unkindly, his voice a bit rough. âThatâll help.â
âWell,â Jaskier replies, trying to adjust the blanket without taking his hands out of his bedroll, which proves impossible. âThanks.â
Before he can sit up straight and, like a sane person, rearrange the blanket on top of himself, Geraltâs doing it for him. His hair is a mess from where heâs been laying on it and heâs squinting, but his hands are warm as they reach for the ends of the blanket and he tucks them into Jaskierâs bedroll, making sure his body is covered.
âYouâre tucking me in,â Jaskier whispers, something that suspiciously feels like love standing on his heart a little.
Geralt smiles. He smiles his soft smile, the one where his lips stretch over his face and theyâre pink and pretty and thereâs a shine in his eyes.
âI guess I am,â he replies, checking no corners have been missed. âWeâll reach the mountain soon. No more cold nights after that.â
Jaskier smiles. He doesnât know what it might look like on his face, lips chapped and slightly cracked. He hopes it shows his gratitude for him.
Geralt sits back on his haunches. The smile is still there. Fonder, somehow.
âWhat, no kiss goodnight?â Jaskier murmurs, because heâs an idiot, because he canât help himself.
âMm,â Geralt says, and for a second, Jaskier thinks heâs getting up to leave, but then Geralt leans forward and thereâs a gentle, sweet kiss being pressed to his forehead. His smile is bigger when he turns away. âThere. Goodnight.â
Jaskier can feel the warmth on his skin, the skin Geralt pressed a kiss to. He can feel it seeping into his bones.
When he turns around, blanket firmly secured, Geralt is watching him from his own bedroll.
âGoodnight,â he mouths at him, and Geralt closes his eyes.
His cloak is covering half his face again, but Jaskier can see the smile heâs hiding anyway.
Might I request Elrond x Platonic reader h/c and fluff fic, where reader comes home after a hunting trip etc. with a minor injury like a bump in the head or something and Elrond gets very fussy about it. Extra points for parent/child relationship cause I have problems.

Youâd spent most of the day out hiking in the surrounding woods gathering wild herbs and other plants for your own experiments. Usually youâre pretty sure-footed, but there had been a hard rain the night before and you completely misjudged how slippery a certain slope would be. The rain had loosened the soil and clay and youâd slipped, rolled down it, and managed to crack your nose-- which, in your opinion, was marginally better than spraining something. At least youâre capable of getting yourself back home.
Lindir walks past just as you cross the bridge back into Imladris and, as he turns to look at you, his eyes widen to saucer-proportions. Youâre painfully aware that you look awful-- covered in mud from head to toe, hair askew, scrapes along your arms and and knees from where youâd broken your fall. And, of course, your nose was starting to swell. Youâd managed to stop the bleeding on the way here but it had to be bruising by now.
âIt isnât as bad as it looks,â you insist. âIâm going straight to the healers. Donât you dare tell Ada.â
Lindir swallows and you brush by him up the road and into the house. It takes some maneuvering (the last thing you want is to run into Elrond on the way in), and you garner more than a few concerned looks. When you reach the healing halls, you head for one of the unoccupied surgeries and find MĂrion inside, mixing up some tinctures and poultices. You set your travel bag unceremoniously on one of the chairs and hop up onto the bed.
He turns to look at you, first taking in your disheveled state and then trailing to the floor, where youâve tracked mud all the way in.Â
âWhat happened to you?â
âDonât ask. Itâs too humiliating. Can you just patch me up before Ada sees? Heâll throw a fit.âÂ
âLia will throw a fit about the floor,â he scolds.Â
âTell her Iâll mop it.â
He lets out a long-suffering sigh and gathers up a few items: bandages and plasters, a bowl of hot, clean water, and some honey and strong spirits and brings them over to the table by the bed.Â
Just as he starts examining your nose, Elrond bursts in.Â
âWhat happened?â he exclaims, rushing to your side. MĂrion backs up to give him space as he takes your face in his hands, turning it this way and that, gray eyes filling with worry.Â
Lindir is right behind him, hovering nervously in the doorway. You shoot him a betrayed look which he returns with a helpless (and rather apologetic) shrug of his own.Â
Elrond prods the bridge of your nose with his thumb and you hiss in a breath at the sharp burst of pain. âAi! Ada!â you try and brush him off but he wonât be moved. âI just had a nosebleed, thatâs all.â
âItâs broken,â he scolds. âWhat were you doing?â
âI lost a fight with a riverbank,â you say dryly. âSlipped and fell. Iâm fine.â Your nose, the treacherous thing, picks that exact moment to start bleeding again. You roll your eyes as his mouth sets into a thin line. He produces a handkerchief and presses it to the bridge of your nose.Â
âLean forward,â he commands, utterly unamused. You obey and replace his hand with your own, pinching to stem the bleeding and wincing at how that just makes everything hurt more.
MĂrion slips out with Lindir and Elrond washes his hands and returns back to the bed to examine all the little bumps and scrapes, making little disapproving noises in the back of his throat. Once the bleeding has stopped he takes the handkerchief, sets it aside, and takes your face to glower at your eyes, then holds up a finger for you to follow. You do, glaring at it as he drags it left, and then right. Satisfied, he asks:
âYour ears are not ringing?â
âNo, Ada.â
âAnd you arenât dizzy?â
âNo, Ada.â
âYou did not lose consciousness when you hit your head?â
âNo.âÂ
He sits on the edge of the bed to take cool, wet cloth and make you press it to your nose to help with the swelling, and then sets to work cleaning the mud out of all the little scrapes. âIf your sight blurs or you begin to feel nauseous or have trouble sleeping, tell me.âÂ
âItâs a nosebleed,â you complain. Your voice sounds nasally even to your own ears.
âIt could have been a concussion,â he clucks, âOr a septal hematoma and neither of those ought to be taken lightly. You are fortunate itâs not necessary for me to reset anything. You are not to go out on your own for the next week.âÂ
âThis is why I didnât tell you,â you mumble.Â
âWhich is why I am glad Lindir did,â he replies back, because with that superior hearing and experience raising two very mischievous twins, you have never ever been able to get anything past him. âAnd MĂrion would have anyway. Sleep with an extra pillow to keep your head above your heart until the swelling reduces.â
You pout while he plasters up the scrapes, applying the alcohol as disinfectant and the honey and plasters where needed. If youâre honest, though, the attention is kind of nice, though you would never admit it out loud.Â
âWhat were you doing climbing down a muddy riverbank in the first place?â he asks at last. âYou know better.â
You have the decency to blush and you reach for your travel pack and pull out a now rather smashed up bouquet of purple crested irises. Youâd seen them growing at the base of the bank and, to your credit, had actually gotten ahold of them before picking your way back out.
âI know how much you like them,â you say, but youâre far too embarrassed to look at him.Â
Heâs quiet for a bit too long, and when you glance up at him at last he looks completely torn between laughing, scolding you profusely, and crying. He takes them from you and kisses your forehead.
âYou are so dear to me,â he murmurs. âThank you, tithen pen. I love them.â He canât keep from adding: âBut you must be more careful.âÂ
âI promise not to go climbing down any riverbanks after itâs rained,â you say.Â
âGood, but donât think that will get you out of house arrest. You still are stuck here until I am certain you have not given yourself a concussion.âÂ
You sigh. He presses his hand to your head and hums a tune in the back of his throat, and you feel the pain in the bridge of your nose ease. He brushes your hair back from your face with another affectionate kiss to your still-muddy forehead and says:Â âI will bring you some new shoes before you get up so you avoid tracking more mud everywhere. Be sure to apologize to Lia and Lindir for the mess.â
âYes, Ada.âÂ
He stands from the edge of the bed and takes the wilted irises over to the the poultice-mixing station to find a glass to stand them in, and the next time you go into his office, you find that he has dried them and put them in a vase as a permanent fixture on his writing desk.Â
