i saw this post and i absolutely had to make a comic out of it!

and not only women, but a power struggle. sooo many plots about conflict between women are like, over a man, because a man is mistreating one of them, etc. but the fey clan is entirely matriarchal, you literally can’t be a man and have the power to perform the channeling technique or become the master. i know the standards are on the floor but i do think it’s really really interesting. it does such a good job exploring the often complicated relationships between women and especially women in the same family that so often get ignored

like, whether she meant to or not, misty probably raised mia to believe that she was going to be the master when she grew up. mia was ten when maya was born and that was the first time she had options! and even then, her option was basically to cut and run and trust that she was making the right choice and that maya would grow up to want to be the master. because mia left when maya was like, 8-10, and that’s nowhere near old enough to know. it makes my heart hurt for both of them, mia for having to gamble like that to give herself and maya a future free of that choking power relationship, and maya who didn’t really get a choice, who traded that choice for a relationship with her big sister who died anyway.

and don’t even get me started on pearl, who’s basically morgan’s sacrificial lamb, whose mother tried to use her for a murder at nine years old!! who is literally just a kid who’s not great at reading, who plays with toys, who wants to not let down her parents just like every other kid on the planet. who was born into this mess and thought it was normal to be treated the way she was treated, who would have been forced into something unnatural and dark if maya hadn’t been brave enough to save her. if she hadn’t had at least two people who loved her because she’s a person, not because she has power.
