From Part 1 of my short story Droose:
“Droose.” he answers just before plunging the silver rod into the ground.

still don’t understand why i feel the need to end every sentence with “tho” tho
chan - because it’s polite - tho
It softens the sentence.. “Books are better than movies!”
“I think books are better than movies though” much softer :)
First attempt at a short story, I hope you like!
Droose Part 1
*Crunch!* *Crunch!*
Elena's blue hair whips around her face and she can hear the gravel under her black boots as she races past the old gas station. "What's happening? No, there's no time to think about. I trust him, I trust him." She repeats this, like a mantra in her head until her pace slows and she strains to catch glimpse of the trail Dev had told her follow. She trys, unsuccessfully to unstick the dyed strands from her lip gloss as she scans the tree line. Starting to shiver in the night air, she glances down. Her blue, silk tank and black skirt are perfect for dancing, but not so practical when you're running for your life. She sighs. "I wish I'd grabbed my jacket... Not that I really had a chance." Still scanning the tree line, she recalls the party she'd left just a half hour before.
"Elli! You made it!" Elena turned, smiling as the short boy approached. His spiky, black hair frames an angular face. She shrugs. As usual, there was a michevious glint to his emerald eyes, though his smile was easy and open. "I thought you'd decided to stay home after all" he said with a grin. "And leave you alone with all these hot babes?" Dev and Elena shared a laugh, their fellow party goers were average highschoolers, just like them. "You want a drink?" Dev asked "Sure." They make their way around a group of laughing kids and a dusty stero, to the scuffed, plastic table sitting next to back door of the barn. Dev pulls a couple of cold cokes from a blue freezer and hands one to Elena. "So have you thought anymore about my offer?" Elena grimaces inwardly, thinking "He can't be serious, can he? We're only 17." Devon frowns, but his eyes soften as he says "I love you Elena. I don't need years to know that I want to spend my life with you." Elena looks down and places her hand on his arm, the dark leather cool under her fingertips. Her lips part and uncertainty colors her tone "Dev, you know I love you, but I just.." Her words trail off as a panting boy appears in the front of the barn. "Someone's coming!" he gasps out. A tall, athletic looking boy jumps up from the threadbare couch, the blonde girl he'd been making out with still clinging to one cocoa colored arm. "Who is it?" he asks. "Trucks! Two huge, grey trucks." Furrowing her brow, Elena turns back toward Dev "who could that.." her breath catchs when she sees his wide eyes and pale face. "Devon? What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost." "We have to go, now!" is all he says, and he grabs her arm, pulling her toward the back door. "Dev, wait! it's not like we were drinking. I think we'll be fine!" He shakes his head, and doesn't stop. Elena wrenchs her arm from his grasp. "Dev!" He stops and looks back his eyes pleading. "What's going on? Are you in some kind of trouble?" A crashing sound from the front of the barn grabs Elena's attention and when she looks back, Dev is gone.
"Nobody move!" commands a thunderous voice. Elena looks around at the other kids, everyone looks a bit uncertain, their gazes on the front door. Three men march in, they all have large, muscular builds and are dressed in what looks like some kind of tactical gear. Elena's throat tightens when she sees the rifles they're carrying. The one in the middle is also carrying a long, silver rod, one end has a lethal looking point, and the other end has a huge, red crystal attached to it. Without thinking about it, Elena begins to edge toward the back door. The athletic looking kid, steps forward, his fists curled. "Who are you?" The man in the middle looks at him and sneers. “Droose.” he answers just before plunging the silver rod into the ground.

not to be sappy on main BUT one thing that i really loved when studying linguistics was that the more important a word is, the earlier the concept of this thing was given a word. for example, the word water is similar in many similar languages (aqua, agua, água). so, the more important a word is, the more languages it’ll be similar across and the older this word will be, theoretically and generally speaking (many other things also affect this)
AND SO in my years studying linguistics, there was one word that was nearly identical across so many regionally different languages (though there are outliers of course), from europe to most of asia to subsaharan africa to indigenous languages. across nearly all languages this is the first word people learn how to say and maybe the first word humans in general officially named and defined:
mamãe - portuguese
妈妈 (māmā) - chinese
ਮੰਮੀ (mamī) - punjabi
mamah - mayan (yucatec)
мама - bulgarian, russian, ukrainian
ماں (mäm) - urdu
মা (mā) - bengali
mẹ (may) - vietnamese
ママ (mama) - japanese
అమ్మ (am'ma) - telugu
mama - quechua
મમ્મી (mam'mī) - gujarati
അമ്മ (am'ma) - malayalam
amá - navajo
엄마 (omma) - korean
māmā - native hawaiian
onam - uzbek
aana - yupik
mema - tagish
μαμά (mamá) - greek
mama - swahili
أمي (umi) - arabic
mayi - chichewa
माँ (ma) - hindi
mam - dutch
ម៉ាក់ (ma) - khmer
แม่ (mæ̀) - thai
அம்மா (am'mā) - tamil
අම්මා (ammā) - sinhala
amai - zulu
ama - basque
आमा (āmā) - nepali
အမေ (amay) - myanmar (burmese)
אמא (ima) - hebrew
mamá - spanish
mom/mum- english
this isn’t actually the first word because we teach babies this word (most likely), but because the “mama” or “ama” sounds are the easiest things for babies to say, and it’s nearly always the only thing they can say at first, and adults across all languages defined their language around that.
babies all over the world for thousands and thousands of years all started out blabbering sounds like “mama” and mothers everywhere were all like Oh Shit That’s Me! I’m Mama!
2020 study goals! I focused on Japanese for 2017-2018 and 2019 was a bad year for language learning. I’ve decided to tackle a new language! I’ll still work on maintaining my Japanese level. (hopefully)
