went to the theatre to see no other choice today, genuinely the only movie i anticipated this year. i have some mixed feelings but i’m also in awe of how densely it was packed with symbolism. feels like i might have to watch it again, even. there’s an old saying in my culture, “every man should build a house, raise a son and plant a tree”. and it feels like no other choice speaks a lot about the desperation of this masculine ideal. build a house atop your own trauma. raise a son who’s not yours. plant a tree over a dead body. the holy trinity. three victims, each evoking yoo man-su’s feeling of inadequacy and self-loathing. one for being a bad husband, one for being a bad father, one for alcohol addiction. something something… y’know
