Nikolai Komyagin, the vocalist, writer, and frontman of Shortparis, tragically died earlier today at 39. Capturing the breadth of Shortparis in words or genres is difficult (experimental, post-pop, avant-pop, art-punk) for how many boundaries they crossed and what it meant. Страшно (Frightening) is the project's most well-known song and video for its surrealist irony, the inversion of expectations in dealing with stereotypes, fear, and the political: here, concerning the other and immigration in Russia, but also abroad. Shortparis attacked political issues directly—boldly touching the most hot button topics like no other group in Russia—but never didactically, always with flair, an ineffable delicate touch of artistry despite the heavy subject matter, weaving subconscious associations together into music and visuals. Their directness and gritty, industrial, punk inheritance belies the surprising dreamworld they produced, just what a breathless experience of the unexpected expected listening or watching their videos for the first time is. Komyagin was a breath of fresh air, daring, unafraid, and fun.
