Okay, someone please tell me if I’m being too woke about this, but I’ve seen multiple fanarts, fanfics, and discussions of putting popular fandom ships into Obsession, and I personally don’t think we should be turning a movie that is explicitly commenting on sexual and psychological coercion, incel culture, and male entitlement to women’s autonomy into fun shippy content.
Do you really want to be casting your OTP into a dynamic where a man places a curse on a woman that traps her in her own body, coerces her into falling in love with him against her will, ignores her repeated attempts to break free, and repeatedly rapes her? A woman who becomes so desperate to escape that she literally begs for death in the fleeting moments where she regains control of herself? For me, that dynamic is so fundamentally about the violation of autonomy that it’s hard to see it as shippy in any sense.
If you’re using Obsession as a framework to actually explore themes of coercion, autonomy, and abuse with characters from other media in a way that’s not romanticizing it, then fine ig. But that’s not what I’m seeing at all. This is not an opportunity to be like “Aww my OTP is so codependent/possessive.” I don’t really think this is a concept that should be treated that lightly.

keep thinking about how I wrote in my dissertation about how every time a new form of public/social space emerges it's immediately popular with kids and teenagers who see it as a chance at freedom and then adults colonise it and kick them out. this happened with malls in the 80s and diners in the 50s and pool halls in the 20s. my dad was doing research on this trend in like 1975. and I was like "yeah so this is going to happen to the internet" and then five years later every government suddenly decided to ban kids from everywhere online.
