Where are the "Actually Romantic" based Jay/Tim fics out there? I can't be the only person who hears that song and thinks of them.
State of the Smitty 10/16/25
Victory! I have gotten the web version of Tumblr to work. For now, at least.
I was being emo over the past few weeks because I am packing up my place and I have all these notebooks for writing and crafts for crafting and I don't use any of them because Real Life is always taking up all my time. So instead of getting rid of all this stuff like I probably should do...I went to the comic store. Because I still feel like comics and writing and general nerdery are part of my identity and not making time for them is sort of denying a piece of myself. (But crochet capybara, you are never getting done. WTF is up with crocheting? Why is is so f***ing hard?). Anyway.
Reading: So my comic shop haul was the first two issues of Fraction's Batman, the trade of Red Hood: The Hill, and the first trade in the Batgirl: Stephanie Brown series which is apparently from 2009.
So far I like Fraction's run, although I feel nothing much has happened and I came into the middle of a soap opera I haven't watched in years. Why is Jim Gordon a beat cop? Why is Vandal Savage the commissioner. (Vandal Savage? Really?) I guess Alfred is still dead? Ugh. But I'm a fan of Jorge Jimenez's art, and his Instagram so that part is working out nicely.
I tried to get a copy of the first Red Hood book before it was pulled from circulation but that was a non-starter so I bought and read Red Hood: The Hill instead. It appears to have started during Red Hood: Outlaw, which is maybe after I stopped reading the regular Outlaw series? Or maybe I just forgot. ANYWAY. The characters are fire, especially the villian, and I feel like this is a whole story that...Jason just kind of. got shoehorned into. I'm definitely not against supporting characters getting some time to shine but Jason didn't even really belong in this story? He showed up occasionally to dispense some wisdom has not traditionally shown to himself, and he's a good link to bring in Batman. But I felt like I was missing a lot. What was his housewarming gift from Bruce? Why do all these people know their secret identities? It's set up like he's going to stay and maybe lead the Watch but then he was supposed to go to New Orleans? I need some more context. Taking recommendations.
I'm only partway through the Stephanie Brown book but I am a huge fan. I think it takes place while Bruce is dead/lost in the ages, and Cassandra just fucks off to Hong Kong one night and gives Stephanie - who is supposed to be quitting superheroing and going to college - the Batgirl suit, which she can't help but go carousing in. Steph wasn't my favorite character right out of the box for a number of reasons that deserve their own post, but this book seems to establish her as the fun, awesome Steph who shows up in fanfic and I'm here for that. There's a lot of Babs, too, which is a plus.
Watching: The latest season of Bakeoff, High Potential, and the new season of Abbott Elementary. Also Dancing With the Stars. Robert Irwin watched his sister win that mirrorball trophy however many years ago and has been practicing feverishly in his bedroom ever since.
Writing: There's no point in me continuing with a "listening to" since it's all either 90s emo rock, Taylor Swift, or Hamilton. Instead I shall be talking about writing and maybe throwing in a "current song" like LJ used to have.
So weirdly, Jason's hookup in The Hill made me want to write more of the Steph/Tim/Jason threesome stories. I actually thought the OC was cute and the kind of civilian chick Jason might actually go for. Unfortunately she was probably the least developed character in the book. MY BRAIN. WHY IS IT LIKE THIS?
I have also been trying to figure out how to get the next part of Marriage 101 out. So it's been a lot of Jay/Tim in my head even if nothing is getting down on paper.
I also kind of want to write my own version of "Jason and Helena hit New Orleans" but I think I would need to read the second Hush storyline first. (The trade isn't out til March of next year? Ugh.) I could also work with Jason and Steph hit New Orleans and Tim eventually shows up because he can't help himself.
I tried to make a State of the Smitty post from my computer because work is making me want to claw my face off, but the editor screen kept crashing as soon as I opened it.
In other news, I read Red Hood: The Hill and had a lot of Thoughts. Mostly about how the community and characters were so well rounded and fleshed out and then there was Jason. Anyone else?
full offense but none of you would have ever survived fanfiction.net in 2009
remember when writers had to be all like: “omg omg lemon starts HERE” y’all are lucky that ao3 has tags and filters you can set
Sometimes shit was marked “lemon” and it’d just be them making out, and sometimes they’d just start pissing on each other
No rules, no laws, you took your life into your hands opening fics
A/N: this contains SLASH, that means TWO MEN, if that makes you uncomfy, DON’T READ!
A/N: please don’t sue me, o anime overlords, I’m not making any money off of this! I’m just a broke student! I don’t have any money!
A/N: I totally wrote this while high off 10 Red Bulls wheeeeeee!!!!!
A/N: COMMENT if you want me to continue the next chappy!!!
No, no, no
remember when there’d be interactions with the author and the characters?
InuYasha: I don’t get why I have to be here for this
A/N: Because it was in your contract!!1!1 *revs chainsaw*
god those were lawless times.
I am in this picture.

State of the Smitty - 8/2/25
Um. Hi. I haven't been on anything fannish in a while for both good and bad reasons.
Good: My boyfriend moved in and now I spend a lot of time going to Target with him. IDEK. Also we're moving again so I spend a lot of time worrying about that.
Bad: I've been having some medical issues. I'm okay. I am just going to a lot of appointments and doing a lot of extra stuff that wasn't on my bingo card for this year.
Speaking of this year, I work for a trade association and am pretty dialed in to the FRESH HELL Americans have been living since January 21 and I am NOT A FAN. I know the last time this happened I started a whole new blog for political stuff but then didn't go through with it because I needed the interwebs to be an escape. Ya'll. It's only been six months.
So. Apologies. Nothing is abandoned. I still love my stories. (Well. Depending on the day.) I will finish them someday.
Reading: The Huntress by Kate Quinn. It's the fourth Quinn book I've read and so far I have loved them all. They are female-centric mid-20th century historical fiction and often center on women's roles in WWII.
Watching: Leverage Redemption, Abbott Elementary, looking forward to catching up on the new season of Strange New Worlds. I have seen Superman and liked it but have not yet watched Thunderbolts*.
Listening to: I made my boyfriend watch Hamilton because he hasn't seen it and now I'm listening to the soundtrack while I work out, while I drive, etc. It's such an earworm.
Bonus Poll: I need to work on...
Marriage 101
Getting Jack and Sand back together
The Kingsfield Copycat
The Story of Dinah and Bruce
I just found out Matt Fraction is writing the new Batman and there's a Red Hood book coming out in September too. I can feeeeeel myself slipping back into the abyss.
The End of the Bat Family with Red Hood #1, a Mature Readers ongoing comic book series by Gretchen Felker-Martin and Jeff Spokes.
I have many thoughts. I haven't read H2SH (yet) but I get the sense it's going to hurt me in the feels. I approve of a New Orleans stand-in city and surprisingly, including Helena, although I would have picked Steph. I kind of doubt this is the Jason Todd story I've been waiting for though.
Also, how is Tim coming out H2SH? Do I even want to know?

Hello Interwebs
I have missed you! Happy Pride!
Real Life has been A Lot lately and I have not been able to be creative at all.
That said, who has seen Thunderbolts? Who wants a story called Mr. Barnes Goes to Washington about Bucky answering his own constituent calls until Sam finds him a Chief of Staff who onboards a bunch of interns? Who wants Yelena to be his Comms Director? Yeah, me too. :D

And without further ado:
Hi, here you go!!!
What do you snack on when you write? (If anything) Pick one of your fics and share three songs to go with it
Ask Game!
Popcorn is 100% my writing enablement snack. You know I'm getting down to business when I make popcorn. That said, I usually have to wait until I'm done eating to get any actual writing done, because buttery fingers and keyboards do not go together.
Oooh, Reccea made me a playlist for Not Just Canon Fodder which included (amongst other bangers):
deja vu by Olivia Rodrigo
Chocolate by Snow Patrol
Boyfriend by Dove Cameron

Ask Game!
28: The fic closest to my heart will always be "The Best Things in Life Are Free." It lived in my mind and heart for so long, and I'm pretty sure it's the best thing I'll have ever written. I reread it a couple months ago when I was putting things on AO3 and teared up so many times.
31: So this is really obscure, but the fic I'd most like to see as a movie is one that I wrote post Star Wars: Episode One, called "The House That Obi Wan Built." It was about Obi Wan pulling Anakin out of the Jedi Temple training, which he was failing at, and taking up residence on the planet of Malastare. Shenanigans ensued. My sister wrote sequels that were better than the original. Judging by the relative successes of the Star Wars franchise, I probably would like it to be an animated tv series rather than a movie.
33: My favorite fic title is "The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves." It just seemed so on point for the fic itself and for SGA in general. I'm trying to think, is there a better one?
for the ask game, number 8 :p
Okay, last line I wrote! Actually last two, because context.
But if Tim was going to get called out on his marriage of convenience, he wanted his co-husband along for the ride.
*Don’t be weird,* he reminded himself and lingered in Bruce's shadow.
Thank you, Anon! You got the Marriage 101 doc opened up again!

State of the Smitty - 10/1/2024
Real Life was busy but we returned to the office and work suddenly got very quiet so I have more time to write. And watch terrible tv, apparently. I have been swiping my boyfriend's computer to play Gotham Knights lately so that's been awesome.
Writing Update:
The next thing that will be done is the fourth part of Marriage 101. I'm about two half-scenes away and I'm probably overthinking them. I'm going to try to finish one of them tonight, before watching the VP debate. I'm sure I can't write anything worse than that.
Reading:
The Agents Irish and Whiskey series by Layla Reyne because everything else was too emotionally draining. Highly recommend. Also Democratizing Finance, by Cliff Rosenthal. But that's for work.
Watching:
Wednesday, for the vibes. Also Agatha All Along, Killjoys, and the new season of Bake-Off. Okay, but also I watched the Ryan Murphy "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" and ya'll. That storytelling is extremely off the rails. I have so many thoughts.
