The legendary witch of Slavic folklore, the one said to reside in a hut atop giant chicken legs in the middle of the forest, gets her rebrand.
Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive first look at Yaga reveals the main stars of the forthcoming TV series that revamps the tale of Baba Yaga as a contemporary mystery-thriller and whodunnit.
Showrunner, executive producer, and playwright Kat Sandler adapted her own theater piece for the small screen.
“Yaga began as a play with a cast of three in a 200-seat theater, reimagining the myth of Baba Yaga through a modern lens with a genre mashup of mystery and myth,” Sandler writes to EW over email. “It has since evolved into television as a collision of folklore, fairy tale, noir thriller, police procedural, horror, and feminist fantasy, while continuing to ask the question: What makes a witch?”
The drama gained immediate buzz with the casting reveal back in February, fueled by the involvement of a certain someone from a certain hit hockey romance. However, with a Comic-Con panel scheduled at the end of the week in San Diego, the team is ready to unveil a little more of what the ensemble has been working on.
Yaga stars Schitt’s Creek alum Noah Reid as Rapp, a private investigator who arrives in a small coastal town following the disappearance of a young heir to a powerful fishery.
Heated Rivalry breakout star Hudson Williams, plays the missing man, Henry Park. Clark Backo, an actress from Letterkenny (the previous TV comedy from Heated Rivalry showrunner Jacob Tierney), plays Carson, an apprehensive local detective at odds with Rapp
Carrie-Anne Moss of The Matrix fame rounds out the principal stars as Katherine, a charismatic university professor. The story unfolds across “a labyrinth of enigmatic suspects, secret lives, and ancient magic,” according to a plot description
Moss previously teased that she gets to “make out” with Williams on the show, calling the actor “a serious gentleman.” One of the images offers a peek at that character dynamic between Katherine and Henry.
Also spotted is actress Sheila McCarthy (The Miniature Wife) as Olena Yaha, described as “a cheeky and wise local woman, originally from Ukraine, who has a soft spot for younger men, vodka, and hallucinogenics.”
The first half-hour original drama from Canadian streaming platform Crave will be distributed in the U.S. via AMC+. A premiere is scheduled for the fall.
Sandler goes on to praise the “Canadian Avengers-level cast” of the lead quartet.
“The chef’s kiss is getting to share this wild story with audiences around the world (soon!)” she writes. “Expanding it for television has only made it wilder, and we can’t wait to welcome you into the woods.”
Moss, Reid, Williams, and Backo were unveiled earlier this year at the apex of the Heated Rivalry craze. And with Williams’ involvement, physical copies of the source material rapidly sold out online. Now back in stock on Amazon, Sandler’s play remains a bestseller.
More will be revealed of Yaga this Saturday afternoon at San Diego Comic-Con, where Sandler will join cast members Reid, Backo, and Moss for a panel that includes a sneak preview.
Every time things get quiet, people start talking about H getting married… or that he’s engaged. And honestly, it has me thinking.
Everyone says he’s supposedly been with this girl for years. If that’s true—and that’s a big if when it comes to the engagement rumors—why is all of this suddenly becoming such a huge conversation right as his career is taking off?
What really throws me off is how visible a non-celebrity partner has become. I genuinely can’t think of another actor whose non-famous partner is discussed like this. If anyone has seen this play before, raise your hand and tell me another celebrity/non-celebrity couple like this because I’d genuinely like to look into it.
A few days ago it didn’t really bother me. But now I’m seeing pictures of her in the same circle as his PR manager, and suddenly everyone is talking about her. I’m not calling her a villain or saying she has bad intentions—I don’t know her. I just find the sudden visibility… strange. And it makes me wonder: if the plan is to make her known now, is she suddenly going to become an actress or step into the entertainment industry somehow? Or is this all just the internet reading too much into things? I honestly don’t know.
If “Perceived” truly doesn’t want to be perceived, then let her stay unknown. But from what I’ve seen, she’s everywhere H is, and if that’s the case, people are naturally going to notice and talk. It feels like you can’t have it both ways—wanting complete privacy while also being part of a very public circle. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s just how it comes across to me.
What frustrates me is that I don’t care about any of this nearly as much as I care about his work. I want to know about his next movie, his next role, his next artistic project. That’s why I became a fan. I don’t mind hearing bits and pieces about his personal life, but I don’t want that to become the main thing I see every time I open my feed. Or the main thing everyone see while looking him up.
I literally didn’t even know Amanda Seyfried was married until today. That’s the kind of low-key I like. Let the work speak louder than the relationship.
If all of this visibility is part of some strategy, I genuinely hope it’s worth it. More than anything, I hope he doesn’t lose himself as fame keeps growing. He’s too talented for the conversation to constantly revolve around engagement rumors or his private life. I just want the focus to be on his work—that’s what made people pay attention in the first place.
Okay, okay… every time I log on here, there’s always something. I’m never bored with this fandom.
But honestly, I’m getting a little tired of the discussions about the one who “can now be perceived.” Sorry, I had to make that joke.
I like reading everyone’s opinions, and I’m definitely not telling anyone what to think—duh, I don’t have that kind of power. But at this point, none of this is surprising anymore.
Some people have come to the conclusion that it’s PR to hide a relationship with C. Others have the same mindset but reach a different conclusion—that it’s about cleaning up H’s image. Honestly, I’m kind of on the fence because, in my head, both sides are making points that make sense.
It also seems like some people have created this version of H in their heads and decided exactly what route he should take. If he doesn’t follow the version they’ve imagined, suddenly you’re not a fan? I don’t really get that.
He’s talented. He’s extraordinary. No article or him posting more of the “now perceived” is going to change my mind about that. It’s also not going to change my mind that I think his chemistry with C is very special.
Honestly, if I weren’t so deep into this fandom, I’d probably think he and Leilani were a couple based on some of the pictures I’ve seen today.
Anyway, it’s cool, guys. Try not to get so upset every time you see her. Like I told one of my mutuals, I figured after the Met Gala we’d be seeing her a lot more, and I was right.
I feel like I’m having déjà vu, like I’ve seen this story before. It’ll blow over. That’s usually how the story ends.
Anyway, I can’t wait for Heated Rivalry Season 2. Back to my happy place I go.

Hi! Guys! What I miss? Give me good news only. I’ve already read the bad ones.
I always come back at a moment like this… oh the discourse… I’m not back fully like I was before. But I’ll stop by and lurk some more I feel out of the loop.
I’m about to be unhinged for a minute. Someone just wrote, “I’ve never watched the heated rivalry show nor read the books but”…. No bitch no one gives a fuck on what you have to say. You’re not part of the fandom, you don’t care for the full story. You want people to come into your anon box to spread more hate cause you’re bored. Reported and blocked, get the fuck outta my face. Outta my face. Begone with you. Sit on a dick and spin.
