I don't really rate books on a number scale, not because of any sort of principle I hold, but the criteria for rating each book is different, and comparing various types of books to each other seems pointless.
I will say I didn't dislike any of these books. Convenience Store Woman was fabulous, I love Sayaka Murata's beautiful voice. I thought Vile Bodies was incredibly funny, I will definitely be reading more Evelyn Waugh in the future. I love the voice of Thomas Mann and how his stories unfold, I already have Doctor Faustus, Buddenbrooks, and Joseph in Egypt in one of the various stacks of books sitting around my apartment (although I will have to track down the rest of the Joseph and His Brothers series).
While I would like to keep up this pace of reading as the year continues, I don't like to set a specific number of books to read in a year as a way of gamifying reading for myself. I can knock out a novel in a day or two, but the non-fiction, especially when it's laden with footnotes, it will take me a week or more to read. However, I did tell my little brother I would read Infinite Jest with him, book club style, so I think that's my only set goal for reading this year.
