Not everyone has the money to buy the book, so I'm going to link down here the place where you can buy it, but if you can't, just look up 'Emotion Thesaurus PDF download' on Google and you can download it for free. I recommend searching for it on VK, it comes with all the other Thesaurus(ses?) too. It's really helpful, especially the examples at the beginning and the notes after each section!
It’s false that Bucky has no character development in the thunderbolts (seeing a lot of those comments, surprisingly)
In TFATWS Sam tells Bucky to be of service to the people he wants to make amends to, instead of just avenging by attacking those he enabled while working for Hydra.
So Bucky tries public service by becoming a congressman because he thinks he also needs to change his modus operandi while making said amends. But he’s obviously unhappy and impatient with the process. He’s unfamiliar with it and never really settled into it fully.
In Thunderbolts, we see him balance out the avenging and amending by accepting his strengths and leaning into his advantages to contribute in the way that suits him the best - by being a leader, guide, and mentor, and kicking ass in the field. He doesn’t run away from the arsenal of special skills he picked up along the way, even if they are connected to his past horrors, because he can do the most good with them now.
It looks like good character progression. And I’d like to see him come into his own more as a Thunderbolts member (let’s be real, I don’t think that other new name is going to stick).
Because the lack of quality fics and discussions related to them in this fandom is frankly criminal.

A Bethyl AU that splits off from canon during Beth’s kidnapping in 4x13 “Alone.”
So very good so very good so very good. Basically what would happen if Beth getting kidnapped was just a minor blip in their journey and the two of them just kept going on like they were. This is my favorite Bethyl fic of all time. Characterization is AMAZING. Fluff is fluffy. Smut is yummy. Pet cat is featured. The option to not share a bed but choosing to anyways is featured. Beth mourning losing Judith (which is something we don’t talk about nearly enough???) is featured. Daryl getting a cold (it’s a little more serious than that but whatever) and actually needing to be taken care of - and more importantly, accepts being taken care of - by Beth is featured. What more could you ask for?

As someone who’s not a big non-apocalypse Bethyl AU girl, I was shocked to find that this was my second fav Bethyl fic of all time but idk man I just wanted it to keep going forever. Daryl is a misunderstood biker with a heart of gold, Beth is an 18 year old farmer’s daughter who feels she’s met her match. It also includes cunnilingus which I find is criminally absent from many a Bethyl fic.

It’s the epitome of everyone knowing Beth and Daryl are going to get together before they do. Daryl is appropriately awkward and angsty. Beth is appropriately highly functional and sassy. Did I mention it is so very very hot and sexy? Because it is in fact so very very hot and sexy.

Okay so this is supposed to be like a smutty one shot but I would say skip the smut and stay for the concept. What I like is the way their dynamic was framed. That Daryl goes to church just to be with Beth without being judged. That Beth knows he’s going to come to church with her every week even though he’s never participated and has no reason to be there. That Beth still dresses up for services in the apocalypse. It just feels right.

Even in winter dark and cold, Beth helps Daryl find the way home.
Another intended smutty one shot that I like the writing of more than the smut and would almost consider fluff more than anything. So Bethyl fluff that is technically smut. Do with that what you will.
Beth’s first night in Alexandria is haunted by what it took her to get there. Daryl offers himself as comfort.
I think Daryl is a little too forward to be canon-compliant here but the heartbreak and the trauma and the anxiety Beth feels is lovely and the writing is so sweet.

Just another dead girl.
Just gone.
Beth survives the gunshot at the hospital and catches up with the gang in Alexandria; Daryl’s day (and life is made). This fic is another really good one. Beth getting accustomed to life in Alexandria is so well done, Daryl’s characterization is EXCELLENT, and the smut is muy bien.
So, just to take stock: not only did Daryl fuck his best friend’s barely legal babysitter in a fit of epically lapsed judgement, he also managed to inadvertently slip a couple stray swimmers past the rubber and knock that babysitter up with some unholy Dixon spawn. And she wants to keep it. And she wants him to co-parent it with her.
It’s like a porno and a rom-com had a baby and that baby grew up to be a public service announcement.
I dare say this is neither a porno or a rom-com but rather an extremely accurate telling of a non-apocalypse setting Bethyl tale. Daryl feels like he reacts in a way that you expect Daryl to. As does Beth. And Hershal. And Glenn. And Maggie. And dare I say even Merle (although he’s just the slightest bit less creepy in this but he’s still Merle don’t get it twisted - Beth just domesticates him a bit with her badass Beth-ness). Again, I’m not a big zero-zombie Bethyl AU person so the fact that I really enjoyed this should vouch for it.

You just gotta unclog the pipe. Are you dumb now? No. The water was sitting stagnant because you were busy doing other things (100% fine btw). If any 'dumb' got in the water then it will quickly leave once you let the water start flowing again. Go get all the stupid out into a doc that doesn't matter. Even several of them. It might take a good while, especially if you're returning to writing after years or after a period of intense burnout, or both (waves).
