The basic principles of dynamic pricing or price pulsing are very simple,â Gaughran says. âLower your price, advertise the sale, and when the book peaks in the charts, raise the price back up to take advantage of the increased visibility that placement on bestseller lists will give you.â

"She was always moving inside the house, like a little mouse.
In 2012, I had the pleasure of taking part in a European collective film-making project called Batesian. In scope of this project, 6 short films about a world where skills transfers were available by a scientific procedure were going to be made. My short story was up for final round. I had totally forgotten about it till yesterday.
If you would like to read about it, you can find it on my Turkish blog here:Â String Effect by Beste GĂŒnay

A million particles she has dispersed into and yet they became one and âherâ once again. Did Thanatos take her life and brought her to the Underworld as he was supposed to? Was she fated for unfortunate torture for having the heart inside? She waited as the consciousness found her once again. She waited for the slice of the sword, for her ribcage to be torn apart so that he could reach in and pull out the heart.Â
Why am I wearing a dress? She muttered, pulling the ruffles, examining it carefully. She reached to her throat, expecting to feel the sword upon.
âAm I dead?â Have I gone toâŠheaven?â She wondered but Thanatos was not there to answer her questions. The sun shone brightly, illuminating the surroundings, refraining from warming them up too much. She brought her hand over her forehead, creating a shadow for eyes to perform with reduced squinting. A beautiful green garden it was, that went on and on as if there was no end.
âYou should be but no, you are not dead.â A manâs voice was heard. Sophie did not need to turn and face the man to know who he was.
His tall figure was sitting on one of the white chairs next to the long table, full of fruit plates and cups of tea. It was the mad hatterâs party. His voice was silky and yet held power. Sophie hissed like a cat. An involuntary habit she picked up at times of danger. The man unraveled his legs and stood up, approaching the disheveled woman. âStand upâ. He ordered in a gentle fashion. She noticed the diamond cuffclips as he extended his hand for her comfort.Â
âI assume I need no introduction.â He said. Sophie stared at the man with silver hair; no, he really didnât.
âHades.â She uttered, acknowledging him. âHonestly, I expected more of a dark and gloomy place, not this piece of heaven.â She said regarding the garden. Heaven, she thought once again. After all the things she had done in her long vampiric life, it was an excruciating absolute that she wouldnât even sniff the air of heaven. It was rather an alternative option, waiting for her. An exotic place with lots of different people who had a liking for /barbecue/.
âYou neednât worry, it is only an illusion. But even the God of the Underworld prefers something more aesthetic.â He said, eyes darted towards her, scrutinizing her figure inch by inch.
âYou have something of mine.â He lowered his voice and patted her chest with his index finger.âSo I have heard.â
She watched the tip of his finger from underneath her lashes. Any second now, she expected him to dig his finger inside her ribcage and rip it open.
âAnd you have something of mine.â She responded with a similar fervor.
âDo I now?â His faint brows raised in surprise. A slight grin settled over his lips. He seemed amused, for now.
âYes.â She said, her eyes settled over his lips. Something burned inside of her. Every second she spent, eyes focused on the man she felt her skin warm up. It was as if every molecule in her body died to be next to him, as if she was moon bound to Earth with an unmistakable force of gravitation.
Shook her head. What did these emotions come from? âYour boy Thanatos took my sonâs mind away. Iâll need it back.â She said, trying to take her mind off these meaningless trivias.
She wanted to feel them upon hers, to feel his muscles outlined with the fine suit. She wanted to feel his arms wrap around her and crush her into nothingness.
âHe took the heart. I see it is more than just fair.â
âHis mind has no value to you.
âI donât know that but I am curious, what will I get in return?â
âI already know you want the heart.â
âYes and I /am/ going to retrieve it from your petty fragile instrument you humans call a body. But I also know if you give the heart, you die. Is his well being so precious to you that you sacrifice your own life?â
âI am well aware but thatâs not the agreement I want to make. I want to live my second lifeâŠâ
âBut you donât want to be a human."
âNo, I am well past my human phase. But know thisâŠâ She covered the little distance between them. He was wearing a heavenly scent. Involuntarily, she leaned in to his neck and sniffed him, thinking how delicious his blood must taste.
âIf you make any attempt to take your precious heart, I will find some idiot turn me into a vampire, deeming the heart useless. You donât want that now, do you?â
âDo you think it is absolutely smart to threaten a god?â
âYou do not leave me many options.â
The god smirked, amused by her forwardness. He walked around the young woman. An arm folded around his chest, the other elbow standing upon the arm as he places a hand beneath his jaw; considering her offer. âI may find some use for you before comes the time that I no longer do.â
It was enough for now. It was enough to buy her time to secure her existence on this earth.
âWhat do you want me to do?â She asked, letting out it in unconscious moan. It was hard and painful to stay away from him.
Literally painful.
And she knew. She knew it was the heart that yearned for the god. /It/ wanted to be with him, /it/ responded to his call.Â
Souls reached the Underworld by millions a day, sailing over Styx but never allowed to swim in it for the Gods knew once a soul entered the river, they would become invincible. The rhetorical walls of the Underworld trembled with /his/ angry holler.
"Where is it?" The man with a giant's figure wrapped up in black leather roared. His skin had taken the color of a bronze statue, eyes were wide and dark, piercing everything he had set his eyes on to. The man held gigantic form but despite his anger, his movements were of a certain elegance.
Â
"Sire, do not be mad, please." One of them crawled out from its corner, its genderless skin was grey, recently came back from a visit to the pits of hell. "We located it."
"Where?"
The minion took half a step back, obviously afraid of the reaction he was about to recieve, "It is in the world of the living.", he finally uttered.
"World of the Living!" The man roared once more, "Who has such courage and idiocy to take Persephone's heart from my house?! That heart belongs to me and only me. /I/ am the one to command it alone." Each word he spoke was a wind of fire for the minions. Earthquakes shook the land, screams were heard from the suspecting souls.
"It was.. we do not know who took the heart but suspect is that an enthereal body named Aisha wanting to buy more lifetime on Earth." The minion tried to explain, his bony fingers intertwined as he waited for his master's mercy.
Everytime he took a step, clouds fell off the heaven, flames hightened in the depths of hell. He walked to his proverbial throne and sat on it, one arm dangling, palm of the other became a fist underneath his sharp chin.
"What do you want to do Master?" the same minion dared to come closer to the giant man.Â
"I want that heart back. It needs to come home." Hades growled, it was no fun to be the god of the Underworld, sit still and do nothing. Action needed to be taken."Send Thanatos to the world of the living and retrieve the heart."
Now it was utmost important to locate him, he only had the answers to her questions explaining her condition but it was rather difficult to find an insane vampire roaming on the world.
Thanatos was sitting on the seat opposite to hers on the jet. Her eyes lifted from the laptop before her and  settled on the half-naked man covered in two sets of tattoos. He was there alright but somehow she was sure that noone else could see him.
"You have heart." He spoke simply. Sophie gulped, he was no good news. Her hand went directly to her chest, expecting it to swell once more.Â
"As many do, yes." Was it a completely smart decision to play it cool, as if she didn't know what he was talking about?
"You have Persephone's heart." The blade in his hand shone with the sunlight entering through the plane's windows. Its sharpness was obvious, noone but him could wield it. Talk about fingerprint coding.
"I do not know any Persephone, sorry." She glanced at the laptop screen for a second then shut it off immediately.Â
"You lie."Â
"That's such a rude thing to sa-" Before she could give voice to the last syllable, a maddening ache pierced her heart, she bent over the small table in front of her, over her laptop. Her face flushed red with the pain.
"Stop it!" She begged.
"The man leaned over till she could feel the strings of his thick hellish hair graze over her forehead. "What you have underneath thine ribcage does not belong to you." He whispered, his breath had the scent of fire and coals. His filthy fingers lift up and grabbed her hair, exposing her neck."Hades wants the heart, Hades needs the heart." He said, pulling her to the side, approaching the tip of the blade towards her chest.
Obtaining the heart was surprisingly easy for the fledgeling. His arms extended only after his notoriety. Vampire elites knew that the fledgeling became mad after his maker was put to meet true death on the hands of a fucking traitor. He was breathing fire; breaking necks, emptying veins, ripping arms and legs all over town to find what he was seeking. There was no corner that could hide anyone if he wanted to find that poor soul.
âIf you want to your maker back, you must not touch it. Any dead being coming in contact with the heart will automatically have its power inside and I am afraid it is only for one useage.â He said, his bald head reflecting the ugly fluorescent lights inside the labroom where Sophieâs remnants rested a few feet away in a bucket.
His warning alerted the man, he retracted his hand immediately, putting the lock on the box once again.
âAnd the scientists? They are not here. I am not sure if any of us know how to prepare the ââ His eyes darted towards the bucket, âspecimen.Â
In less than 15 minutes, the room was full with scientists that were groggy, muttering and swearing underneath their breaths to be woken up at such an odd hour.Â
When she came back, he was going to show her the bone trophies he made out of soldiers who have shot her. Most of all, he wanted to destroy Bill Compton but he knew Sophie would like to do it by herself, that pleasure was hers and hers only.
If the scientists thought it would be physically possible for them to recreate a person âa vampire nonetheless- from their gooey remnants solely by present science, Sophie would still be doing her time in Tartaros under Hadesâ cruel command. Â
Persuading these spiritual people was not easy but the command came from a higher plane and they could not protest..much. A few young labrats were monitoring the screens for life activity as the magical bunch channelled their energy into red liquid in a glass container located in the center of the room where Sophie was bound to be born again. Without a mother or a father, she would become herself from herself, from all that she was and all that she would be. Â
Each magical unit had a different magical essence, sending different frequencies into the goo that was Sophie at that moment. The electromagnetic field vibrated, labrats noticed the change as well. It meant their impossible studies were not impossible afterall, that success was finally theirs. Â
But their hopes were crushed when the energy levels dropped down to nothing. No life, no nothing. The magic proved its disuse as they predicted. In this failure, the scientists could gloat that they were the only ones the life as we know it, really needed.Â
âIt is not enough.â The head witch with a missing eye spoke, every other member of this magical circle stared at the woman quickly with stares that spoke that she should have kept her mouth sown.Â
âThen do what is enough. Do what must be done. I want her living and breathing.â The benefactor who has funded this whole experiment spoke angrily. He stood tall, breathing through his nose âeventhough he didnât need any oxygen to continue his existence-, his accent turned towards French when he got angry like this, finding his root.
None of the supes spoke further. They could feel his anger but his violent tendencies did not inflict fear as strong as what was necessary to conjure up the energy to have the vampire queen transform from a pool of her own blood into her glorious solid body. Dressed richly, the vampire grabbed the head witch and tossed her towards the glasses greeting her at her destination before she hit the floor. He held a scalpel in his hand, nestled it on the curve of her neck.Â
âTell me what must be done and do it!âÂ
The woman was trembling, she was trying to concentrate and chant a spell to repulse the blood sucking demon but her fear was getting the best of her. Her coven sisters stepped forward to help, they were furious with this disgrace but the change in the vampireâs eyes made them halt to a stop. The urgency in his voice scared the women, there was not just anger but also loads of pain hidden inside. And pain was a strong motivation for him, to unleash what he has been holding back âif he has been holding back before-.Â
âTell me what you know or she dies.â He threatened the circle. The shaman and the guru stood still around âSophieâ doing what appeared to be trying to find a brain wave, or an echo.Â
âAccording to the legend, there is a heart locked in the depths of Underworld. It is the only living thing in the midst of all souls that crossed the line.âÂ
âAnd?â Vampire gritted his teeth but he was oddly calm for a man who patience was running out.Â
âThe heart gives life that has been taken and the news is that it is on the black market.â One of the witches talked, her Cajun accent surfacing. She lunged forward in motion to pry the vampireâs hands off of her sister.Â
âHow lucky you are then.â The man whispered, letting go off the witch. His eyes still set on the witch.Â
âWe?â The witch who stayed silent till now spoke, her eyes checking up on her sistersâ safety.Â
âYes, now you can continue to live.â He said, turning towards the door. Bringing up latest technology mobile phone out of his pocket, he spoke slowly.Â
âYes, this is Andre LeClerq. I need a favor and I need it fast.â The vampire, who was Sophieâs few and dear fledgelings spoke to the man on the other side of the line.Â
âHeard you had a heartâŠâ His voice trailed off for the supes in the room as he exited, leaving them in the custody of the labrats and bodyguards waiting outside the facility.
âIs the legend true? I have been out of contact for so long, I have lost the ability to part reality from illusion.â
The witches nodded, one of the reasons for their hiding was the black market. The head witch had lost her eye in one of the auctions for its magical value.
âYou didnât tell him.â The shaman whispered, breaking his silence and yet not the stillness of his posture.
âTell him what?â Guru asked in return. Cracks on his face had made him look a lot older.
Revealing his head under the cloak it was covered with; shaman spoke, âThe heart. Who it belonged to.â
 âWhose heart is it?âÂ
The witches shared a glance, seemed hesitant to bestow an answer this fatal question. The head witch found no further reason to hide this mythical tidbit from the group.Â
Alright so I know it is probably illegal but there are many of us that won't ever see this film ever again.
