i've been thinking SO MUCH about Scott Goldsmith
Cause here's the thing - obviously I love the idea of him having emotional growth and redemption and everything, I've written over 100k words exploring that and will be writing more. But I do think Consequences of Years!Scott is very much an idealised version of the character. Not to say he isn't flawed; he's still selfish and manipulative, he still leans on old habits and unhealthy coping mechanisms, all of his growth was almost literally forced on him. He's by no means perfect, but he has gotten to the point where he is tending towards goodness. And I'm really happy with the direction I've taken his character for this story specifically. But there are so many different directions his character COULD go.
As with all the characters in the smp, he is such an unreliable narrator, there is such a brilliantly blank slate to build on. We only know what he tells us, and one of the main things he tells us is he is a Manipulator. There's no canon backstory, beyond the 'asleep for 600 years' thing. He's the kind of character that has a completely different personality depending on who he's interacting with. You can interpret him as deeply, horrifically evil, and it would align with what we're shown in canon. Or you can interpret him as traumatised and flawed and fighting for his life, and there would be evidence to support it.
His character works as a canvas to paint whatever form of "vampirism is a metaphor for [x]" you want.
To Avid, he is all the things he is scared of and wants to be.
To Legs, he is the perfect example of everything that is wrong people in power.
To Shelby, he is a perfectly broken thing that can be fixed with love.
To Pyro, he is the outward reflection of the monster inside himself.
Scott Goldsmith is a metaphor and a symbol, as much as he is a character. To me, there's no right answer as to if he """deserved""" a redemption or not. He didn't, because of all the horrors he inflicted on people. He did, because he helped save as many people as they could. He didn't, because he only ever acted in his own self interest. He did, because everyone deserves a second chance. All of those things are true, from someone's perspective.
I just think he is so FASCINATING. Scott Goldsmith can be anything, serve any narrative role, and there as so many amazing interpretations of his character out there. Evil Scott Goldsmith, I love you. Begrudgingly Redeemed Scott Goldsmith, I love you. Doing his best after a bad upbringing Scott Goldsmith, I love you. Here for a good time AND a long time Scott Goldsmith, I love you.
Anyway, what a character.
