red hoodie girl is sarah, feather jacket girl is jay, I love them very dearly and they're the main characters of the oc project I was supposed to start this summer before I uh. got distracted

sarah is a lonely high schooler with a terrible personality no talents no skills and no friends, and jay is a college dropout in her early-mid 20s working gig jobs and playing in a band after moving to the city from a small town and not making it in formal education. sarah, having nothing better to do and little parental oversight (they don't care one way or the other) spends a lot of time mucking around the indie music scene in her neighbourhood in the city. she's familiar with jay's band. she's a fan of jay's band. she's parasocially obsessed with her and idolizes her completely. jay barely knows she exists

uh this is the part a lot of people don't expect but then they both die horribly

there's a fire at a concert, the building collapses, wham bam they both wake up dead next to each other in a pool of their blood in the charred rubble of this place. neither of them know what happened but their skin's lost its colour and their canines are sharper and they can make a few guesses

neither of them react in ideal ways to this development

sarah is an edgy 17 year old with no prospects who just gained something in common with her idol. she's feeling pretty positive

jay is a somewhat stable young adult with a whole life, who recognizes sarah from her shows, who sees the way sarah looks at her, and who saw some shady and suspicious things in the process of dying, and she decides on the spot that it's her fault that this happened to sarah, and it's her responsibility to fix it (because she feels like she's fucked up her own life quite a bit and the only thing worse than that is doing it to someone else)

the suspicious things she saw remind her of her hometown, a small rural mining/tourist town that she ditched as soon as she got a high school diploma, and she decides that's the best place to start looking for answers. so she packs up her entire life, without telling anyone, and drives on over there with sarah (because sarah would follow her anywhere at this point)

their cover story for all this is that they're sisters, and jay manages to get a radio job in her hometown and gets sarah enrolled in the high school (because dear god she's not messing this girl's life up more) while they try to figure things out

this series of decisions of course had no consequences on their lives whatsoever and the dynamic between them is completely healthy and well communicated (lie)

in regards to how their relationship progresses, sarah discovers pretty quickly that the perfect version of jay she had in her head does not apply to the real person, mostly because real jay wants her to do things such as finish her mandatory education, which is lame and boring and awful. and jay is so hyperfocused on her own guilt and Not Fucking It Up that she loses her sense for what the best choices actually are for the both of them. but they both do care for each other in their own ways, and mostly the plot is them learning to communicate better and love each other on the same terms

there's a bunch of other stuff involved, like a family of funeral-home-running vampire slayers, and a fucked up blond man bandmate with nothing to do with anything, and toxic yuri involving a murderous myspace scene teen werewolf. and the part about what the deal actually is. but I digress for now
