I don't tend to speak on fandom discourse myself, it's something I've avoided on principle since day 1 actually- but, I want to make some of my stances clear going forward. This blog has been my little corner of the internet where I can throw spaghetti at the wall at my convenience for the longest time and I intend to keep it that way. I think it's best if people understand what they may see if they continue to follow me.
For my DSMP mutuals/followers: this one's all VSMP, if you know me from DSMP I think all of this is going to be pretty standard fare
1. I have always separated character from content creator especially in situations where the content creator turns out to be a shitty person. Going forward I will continue to include v!Avid in my fanworks and keep talking about the character. I have never been one to let an evil person ruin my enjoyment of something and I don't intend to going forward
2. My blog is not a safe space for CCs, the content I create is not for them even if it's inspired by their works- it's for my own enjoyment and the enjoyment of the people I choose to share it with. People creating art based on a tv show or movie aren't doing so for the writers or directors, they're drawing from the spark of inspiration it gave them. In my opinion the creative process should be largely removed from what would bring the CCs joy unless it's specifically directed at them.
This is not to say that I hold animosity towards any one CC (save for people who have done something to warrant derision) but merely that I don't create with them in mind and have no intention of doing so going forward. Which is to say, I will continue creating ship based content for v!Pyro going forward if the desire to do so finds me, and it will likely end up posted here or to tumblr in some way or another
3. I think this fandom's tendency to stick CC opinion as word of god and run with it unquestioningly is concerning. I imagine much of it comes from a desire to be respectful towards them or do what's seen as good, but in the past few months people have demonstrated an alarming lack of critical thinking skills in relation to creators.
When cc!Avid spoke of mlm relationships with such derision; painting the actual fucking dude Scott Smajor as a predatory force without ever saying his name, the majority of the fandom was silent or supportive simply because nothing bad had come out about him yet and therefore no one was going to raise an eyebrow.
Regardless of intention, cc!Pyroscythe saying that he has people in various fanspaces who will report back to him regarding fanworks so that he can what? Punish them for creating? Sounds by all accounts to be a threat, and that's frankly an immature and silly response to this kind of situation.
To threaten your fans with harassment for creating works with romance at its center is such an overreaction to a situation which could've been solved by a block button, it's frankly laughable. That's not even to say how this decision will incense people who already wanted to harass others to do so from a falsely constructed moral high ground.
There's much more I could say on this situation, as one might be able to tell I have very very strong opinions on it, but this post is not solely about that. Did no one in this fandom learn anything from the Avid situation? Was a provably bad actor going out of his way to subtly slander an openly gay man and the concept of mlm relationships in mcyt storytelling as a whole not enough to make people begin scrutinizing what CCs have to say further?
Now that my stances have been made clear, expect my usual works going forward. If you disagree with my stances that's perfectly fine, but I'm not really going to argue them at this time- I have no desire to platform discourse on my blog tbh. That's not to say I'm not open to questions or discussion, I'm happy to talk so long as people are respectful about it :>
