6 zoo myths that arent true
Most behaviors that you see keepers demonstrate at the zoo or aquarium are natural behaviors that the animals do in the wild. When the animals do them, the keepers give them a treat and pair it with a gesture or a word, so that they associate them, and eventually the word or gesture is enough to elicit the behavior because the animal knows that there’s a reward. But here’s the thing: most of those behaviors are encouraged because they help veterinarians and keepers do health checks.
Yeah, its cute when they nose boop the stick, but also keepers need to check their vision and depth perception and mobility. Sea lions are so cute when they wave! But vets and keepers need to check under those flippers to make sure that they’re healthy and that they don’t have any restrictions on their motion or cuts on their skin. Why do they ask animals to jump? Again, to make sure that they’re healthy, and also because its fun and animals LOVE to move around and jump and have fun, its mentally stimulating.
This is the most important thing I will ever reblog and anyone who is still ignorant enough to think zoos are awful can fuck off my blog. Zoos are necessary. If you think otherwise please unfollow me because I don’t want you here.
This is super important for people to see. I have worked at a zoo and I can not tell you how many times I’ve had to defend the zoo for the good they do. People need to learn that zoos are actually helping save endangered species.
And like, to be clear: there was a time when this was not true.
A lot of the momentum against zoos comes from decades past when, not to put too fine a point in it, they sucked.
Even now, you do want to take a quick look to make sure a zoo or wildlife park or whatever is part of a GOOD accreditation body, like AZA, or in the case of smaller ones that may not have the finances for accreditation, details like who works there, what their goals are, and so on. And if you’re in a country or region with few regulatory structures, you’ll want to look into any given zoo yourself.
But that image of zoos as terrible places when animals are tormented for amusement comes out of the past, and no longer represents at all what zoos do.
In North America for example “zookeeper” is a degree-career, usually with post-graduation courses that amount to another degree. Etc.
The animals in zoos long term aren’t and almost certainly never were releasable; and zookeepers get SO FUCKING EXCITED when animals they’ve been involved with are part of a release program.
Are zoos also largely the result of an imperfect world? yeah, to be honest. IN that perfect world, there would need no need for the conservation efforts of zoos or there to be a permanent home for unreleasable non-pet animals surrendered or seized from people who should know better, and so on. But we’re not in that one; we’re in this one.
there are also specific animal species for which this is not true– for example, elephants have dramatically shorter lifespans in zoos than in the wild
(although this data is arguable)
orcas also do very poorly in captivity
(although notably they are typically kept by marine parks, not zoos)
but a lot of data about animal welfare comes from zoos themselves, which are very invested in understanding and improving. and there are plenty of species that not only fare better, but are contributing to the well-being of endangered wild populations
although this data is arguable
Quite - the one keeper’s comment about “what dataset is this using?” is EXTREMELY germane, as if you’re comparing the life expectancy in, say, a rigorously protected sanctuary park to zoo life expectancy that includes numbers from the 70s and even 80s, you’re going to get some wonky ass numbers.
There’s also the fact that a large number of animals who are in captivity NOW are genuinely unreleasable even in a sanctuary context - so even if we never ADD another animal of their kind to the captive population, we still have a duty of care to the ones we have.
At this point there is no accredited aquarium that keeps orcas, period. And that is indeed because you just can’t care for them in facilities the size of what anyone can creature or afford. Now the downside of this is that for instance when a calf was recently found to be separated from its pod in my region, what we could do about it was SEVERELY limited; she may have been lucky (there’s some sighting evidence from July) but as far as we know she hasn’t made it back to her pod yet and her future prognosis is really, really guarded.
So there’s that aspect as well.

“I don’t know how to reconcile that my favorite piece of media was made by someone awful.” Because they’re a shitty person who made something good. It’s not that rare of a phenomenon. Shitty people make good things everyday. A piece of art being made by a terrible person does not make its effect null and void and making good art does not redeem a terrible person. People who are irredeemably nasty can say something true and honest on occasion. To reevaluate a work after finding out more about the artist’s horrendous biases and actions and still find things that are honest and true even when consuming it through a critical lens, that is a beautiful thing. If the artist’s actions and words completely destroy it for you and distort the meaning you once found, it’s okay to feel a sense of mourning and loss at that.
This is not to say that you should continue to lavish social and financial capital on the artist because you enjoy their art but to say that enjoying art made by horrible people does not mean you are in some way unclean.

PJO doodles + Jason thoughts
One of the few close friends I had left in my life has decided to ghost me. She won't reply to my texts, dms, or story replies. I left her messages asking if we were OK and if she could please just talk to me. She left me on read for every single one. I even missed out on an event I desperately wanted to go to because I asked her if she'd like to come with me before I bought the tickets and never got a reply. And it hurts so much because I already went through this once years ago, and I don't wanna go through it again. It left me with severe trust issues and an inability to let new people in. My mental health is at an all time low and this is just exacerbating it.
This is a woman I was going to ask to be my maid of honor one day. Now I have her Christmas presents collecting dust in my room.
do you have those shows that you just pretend got cancelled after a certain season/episode and any following episodes just never existed in the first place?
Season 8 of That 70s Show doesn't exist
So let me get this straight
1. Elon Musk buys Twitter
2. Elon Musk unbans Andrew Tate
3. Andrew Tate picks a fight with Greta Thunberg
4. Greta Thunberg ratios the shit out him
5. He gets mad and posts a video response
6. There's a Romanian pizza box in the video which twigs Romanian police of his location
7. He is raided and arrested for human trafficking
That is some fabulous fuck-around-find-out shit and a great end to the year.

Everybody || Backstreet Boys
Just occurred to me that some of you may have never seen this music video. They had absolutely no reason to make it the way it is but damn they went hard.
One of the backstreet boys in 1997 : no I’m TELLING you, monster fuckers are the future.
This might sound weird, but does anyone ever just have a fictional character's death pop up randomly in your head and all of a sudden you want to cry all over again? You'll be doing something completely unrelated and they'll just appear in your brain and then you're tearing up. Whether they're from a book you read, a show you watched, or a manga, etc. Like every feeling you had the first time just comes rushing back to you and it hurts just as much as it did back then.
No? Just me? Ok.
