something something “I’m a person and my name is Anakin” showing his name is a central way he retains identity while a child slave vs “that name no longer has any meaning to me” in almost the same breath as “I must obey my master” thirty years later after Sidious accomplished what Gardulla and Watto never managed to: breaking his spirit and convincing him he has no other options but obedience, accepting painful consequences, never looking for a way out. something like that
the artemis ii mission reminds me why i love humanity so much. they play pink pony club for the astronauts. they have issues with microsoft outlook. one of the astronauts named a moon crater after his late wife. a jar of nutella just flew by. they make 67 memes because they’re big nerds with huge hearts who say that we look beautiful from there. they call dibs on sleeping arrangements and the mission specialist likes sleeping like a bat. the pilot’s daughter shows her dad off on her social media.
dunno just sometimes helps to think that we can do things like that.
Two older studies I found in a sketchbook :)
Ink marker, posca paint markers and pencils
Ya know I feel like Ahsoka had moments offscreen as a Padawan who tried something stupid to impress her master and ended up getting hurt but still made their bond stronger only out of worry XD:
Ahsoka: “And that is how I backflipped, punched, slashed and single handedly stopped that bomb from going off! You’re welcome sky guy!”
Anakin: “Ahsoka you broke both your arms in the process!”
*Looks at her arms in casts then back to Anakin.*
Ahsoka: “…I don’t see your point.” -3-
you say that like anakin wouldn't immediately try to one-up her

the last bit of earth ryland grace ever felt was being shoved forcibly into the dying grass....... hello? im crazy about this.
it’s so tragic how stratt constantly had to make tough decisions in order to save the planet. it’s so easy to want to hate her but when you realize she’s making the tough decisions no one else wants to make, it’s hard to.
she had to nuke antarctica to speed up global warming to counteract the sun dying. she had to pave the sahara to breed astrophage so more fuel could be produced. stratt had to damage the planet in order to save it. she kidnapped grace so he could study astrophage, then sedated him when shapiro and dubois died, in order to put him on the hail mary.
and through it all, she’s conflicted. she hates that she has to be the one to do this. in the book, grace notices that she looks pained. but she has to do it anyway. for humanity, she tells herself.
after everything she did, the mission succeeded. she most likely got life in prison, but it was worth it. after all, the ends justify the means… right?
the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.
in a world where grace eventually goes back to earth when erid is ready to make full contact. he's officially an eridian and earth dual citizen and is a physically very old man. it's also been a lot of earth years since he was here, especially due to time dilation. he comes off the eridian lander in a hoverchair accompanied by rocky in his little xenonite suit and is like wow, fresh air. rocky isn't it so beautiful here. rocky this is the ground i used to walk on. rocky this is the food i used to eat. rocky these are the people you helped me save. amaze amaze amaze.
and his speech has taken on eridian habits from years of only really communicating in eridian: he drops and raises octaves to show emotion, he's speaks melodically and with a rythmn that pings as music when you first hear it. his creaky old man voice is that of somebody who has spent their whole life singing, somebody who speaks for a living, because he's both of those things. his syntax is strange and his sentences are structured oddly. he looks around at everything with the delight and wonder of somebody who thought he'd never see any of this again.
he watches a sunset. he watches the rain fall. he watches a spider spin a web. he watches a waterfall. he smells and tastes and feels and sees and hears all of the things he left behind. he misses his home on erid. he's never been happier to be anywhere in his life. it's strange. rocky, it's strange. this isn't home, anymore. but it's still part of me. rocky, it's strange.
there's a statue of him in every major city he visits. he stands in front of the school he used to teach at, which was named after a dead president when he was here. now it's called ryland grace memorial middle school. it was named for him as the sun got brighter and the earth mourned his sacrifice yet again, but praised him for saving them. the lab he used to teach in, on the days he got to lead practical experiments, is named after rocky. rocky, it's for you! they love you, too! rocky, this sign is for you, it says your name!
eva stratt is an old woman, now. she was pardoned, in the end, in the wave of relief that followed the beatles' arrival with the taumeba. she's lived out the rest of her life quietly, ambition tamped down in the wake of it all. she's still sharp. harsh. she greets grace with an, "I told you so," but even after so many years, grace can see that she's glad to see him. glad he survived. glad he doesn't seem angry with her.
and it's not that grace has forgive her. he explains this to her over a cup of strong, black coffee. rocky explores the forest to give them time to speak. it's not that he forgives her. what she did, the decision she made for him, it wasn't right. it wasn't good. it saved the world, yes, but it wasn't fair. but. but, he says. i have a good life. i have friends. i have a classroom. i know now that you were wrong about me, back then. i am not a coward, and i am not selfish. i was afraid. i was terrified. i was lost. and now i am none of those things. i do not forgive you, but i am not angry with you, either. it is what it is. rocky and i, we saved two worlds. i can live with that, even if i don't forgive you. and eva stratt nods and understands. and they finish their coffee.
a handful of grace's students, the last class he taught before being wrapped up in the end of the world, they ask to see him. not all of them. some of them didn't make it through the disasters that came with the years long dimming. some of them never really believed that grace was the one who saved the world, falling into the rhetoric of those who say the whole thing was a hoax, and the weather patterns fixing themselves is just proof of it. but the ones who do come are surprised when grace remembers each of their names. remembers where they sat in his classroom, and the jokes they thought were funny and the jokes they thought were lame. they talk to him and he remembers throwing them beanbags in the end of the world and trying to make them laugh. when grace laughs at something rocky sings into the world, he's laughing through more than a few tears. he tells his students, the kids he saved the world for, that they've just been called leaky blobs by the other savior of the world.
when his students leave, grace sits in the setting sun, strong and warm, and looks out over the ocean. rocky, isn't it beautiful? rocky, don't you see? we made this possible, rocky. we saved them. we saved this. rocky, we did it.
and for maybe the first time since it all started, grace believes it. rocky, we did it. we did it. we saved them. we did it.
something about the way stratt only gave grace three hours to make a life changing decision, to give up his life on earth to be sent to space to die for a seemingly impossible mission, only to force him into the option she wanted anyway.
something about how rocky gave grace the option of going back to earth and told him to take all the time he needed. something about how rocky said he would respect grace’s decision no matter how sad it would make him.

someone just told me that anakin 'guilt-tripped' padme into loving him when he confessed his feelings to her because he said things like "you're in my very soul, tormenting me" or "i can't breathe at the thought of not being with you"... like, no. it's literally a romantic tragedy, that's how they supposed to confess their love in a romantic tragedy. that's The Genre
project hail mary and the martian are perfect foils of each other.
the martian is the story of one man stranded on mars with barely enough food and supplies to last him a calendar month, let alone the 14 that it inevitably takes to bring him home.
mark watney's rescue means millions of dollars in unplanned expenditures, cooperation between multiple nations that frankly have no stake in the life of one american astronaut, and risking the lives of 5 of his crew members. it is a story that makes you tackle the fundamental question of: "how much is one human life worth?"
the answer, the book (and its equally well-executed movie adaptation) offers, is everything.
they could have simply called it a day and told him that it was untenable, that they cannot possibly be asked to risk the lives of the rest of the ares iii crew. but they did not. they did not, because they deemed that no cost was too high if it meant that there was even a snowball's chance in hell that they could bring that one man home.
project hail mary, on the other hand, is a complete 180.
here, the fate of an entire planet's survival rests upon the shoulders of one rather unremarkable man. ryland grace is a middle school science teacher, whose only claim to fame is a controversial research paper. it is a story that forces you to confront the question: "how much do you personally owe humanity when its fate hangs in the balance?"
once again, the answer is everything.
ryland is not the brightest person on the planet, nor is he the bravest. he doesn't choose to be involved in saving earth, and he certainly doesn't choose to be sent on a suicide mission away from it. in project hail mary, one man has no choice but to shoulder this burden for the sake of humanity. and, it turns out, he's not the only one carrying this responsibility.
somehow, both books provide the same answer and message, only in somewhat different ways. they both serve to convey that life, no matter the scale, is worth preserving.
that when it comes to one man stranded 140 million miles away, no cost is too high, no risk too big, because his life matters. he matters. and he matters not just because he volunteered to go up there, or because it wasn't his fault, or because they know he's out there. he matters because he exists, and that is more than enough to do everything possible to bring him back.
or that no personal cost is too high to pay if you are the one person that can actually save humanity. the people may be faceless, nameless crowds to you, but their lives are worth saving simply because they exist. they exist, and that is plenty reason to doom yourself to certain death if it means that there is even a single chance in hell that you will save them. you don't have to be talented, or remarkable, or necessary to matter.
you exist, and that is enough for you to matter.

Luke Skywalker stops walking, entranced by the photo of the woman open on Leia's datapad. "Whose that?"
"Oh." Leia looks down fondly, but sadly, at the woman. "I never met her. Senator Padmé Amidala. She - she died just when the Republic did, too." She swallows. "She was pregnant... probably on the brink of starting a family, and the Emperor likely killed her for her opposition. Or so I have always thought."
"That's..." Luke trails off, not sure why the death of a woman decades ago he never knew hurts so much, a twinge of pain deep in his soul.
"Tragic," Leia finishes. "She could have done so much more. She deserves to be here." Her lips twist down.
It is like a hole in his soul. "She does," Luke says, softly.
The image of Padmé Amidala, regal and defiant and dead, stays with Luke, unshakeable.
at the end of the day when it comes to padmé i think it’s really important to remember that her closest friends are literally her employees. her only other friends are her coworkers. her closest friend for years was a girl she met at 14 whose job it was to pretend to be her and potentially die about it. another friend with the same job died in her arms while pretending to be her. she does not have friends outside of her squad of employees who pretend to be her and sometimes die about it and then her politician coworkers. too many of you are way too surprised that this woman is not normal about love or relationships or her own self considering all this
Not just that, but in some versions of canon, she's been doing humanitarian work (and watching entire species of sentient beings go extinct) since she was nine or so, and materials released contemporary with TPM indicated she entered high politics by becoming Princess or Governor* of Theed at twelve. Even if that's not canon, though...elected Queen at fourteen. The girl was essentially a child prodigy who spent a crucial developmental period under unfathomable amounts of crushing pressure and responsibility. I could write a thesis on Vader and Amidala as archetypes of the burned-out Gifted kid probably.
*The title varies between two books, but both imply an equal degree of importance in context.

I find it kind of pathetic to say that Padmé died of love ONLY because of Anakin, babygirl saw her entire life crash in a week
She was trained in politics from a young age; her life and ideas were shaped around her political ideals and goals. Imagine watching the project of YOUR LIFE being destroyed in your eyes?
The work she spent her life fighting for has been destroyed, people are dying on every side of the galaxy, pregnant with TWO children and unsure if she'll be able to raise them under this new infernal government which she openly opposed, her husband is increasingly drifting away from the man he married and loved, becoming unrecognizable
She died of a broken heart because she had lost her whole life!
in tales of the jedi, anakin is the one who pushes ahsoka to go above and beyond typical padawan training. to her, it seems unfair and pointless. in ahsoka’s mind, why would she need to defend herself against the blaster fire of 10 soldiers at once? as far as she’s concerned, her only threat are the battle droids she faces every day.
until order 66 occurs. then anakin’s training is the only thing separating her from life and death. how ironic and heartbreaking, that the very person who indirectly saved your life is the same person who endangered it in the first place?
