They have a lot in common - they’re both dramatic, somewhat ostentatious guys with a love for machinery and the bad habit of hiding their depths under masks of superficiality.  

But they have some rather compelling differences, too.  Edgar is self-sacrificing to a fault, putting his kingdom before his own happiness, eternally tied to his duties and suppressing his desire for freedom.  He made his decision long ago, and has completely resigned himself to it.  Setzer, on the other hand, puts a concerted effort into remaining flippant.  He deals with his past by living in the moment to an irrational degree.

There is so much potential for symbolism, too!  Edgar lives in Figaro Castle - a solid stone structure, but one that moves.  It is heavy, grounded, but is mechanized and able to travel beyond borders.  Setzer flies the Falcon - a brilliantly swift airship, but one from a painful past - and one that spent years unused, stagnant, and underground.  Setzer is associated with gambling, or chance; Edgar is associated with a double-headed coin, or using the appearance of chance to achieve his own calculated ends.  A coin that holds significance to both his story in the game, and Setzer’s!

Not to mention, how much room there is for mutual character development - in fact, the very idea of a romantic connection between them demands it!  For Setzer, it would be a step towards moving on from the past, trying again to build something lasting with a person that he’s been through a lot with.  For Edgar, with everything that is expected of him, it would be highly irresponsible - something that is probably very good for his happiness in the long run!

There could be drama and intrigue, but also a lot of humor.  There would doubtlessly be a lot of high-speed antics and improbable feats of machinery.  (They’d probably reignite the world’s industrial revolution between the two of ‘em.)  Ultimately, though, they are two fantastic characters who, I believe, have a lot that they could learn from each other!

most of the final fantasy games are known for this anyway so it hardly needs saying but WELL-ROUNDED WOMEN CHARACTERS

incredibly touching story about finding hope in the face of complete and total depair; also laugh-out-loud funny - really and truly surprisingly cinematic for a lil sprite game

so it’s like an anime (right down to the Anime Hair™), done in a retro-style game

including the (large, very large) cast of memorable characters all of whomst are incredibly endearing in their own way. most importantly, one is a DOG:

aww, look at him! isn’t he cute? here’s a tiny little spoiler for you: the dog does NOT die! isn’t that reassuring?

you guys ever play that skeleton game? ok, do you remember the part where the robot wore that really fancy dress and sang opera to you while trying to kill you? it was a parody of a super-famous scene in THIS game for which the very first video game opera was ever written

you ever play chrono trigger? it’s like chrono trigger’s older edgier sister, with chocobos and moogles

speaking of: this is one of those Classics. now when people talk about it you’ll understand what the fuck is going on. your gamer cred will SKYROCKET

incredible soundtrack by the legendary nobuo uematsu, every song in this game is so fucking catchy u will be humming it to urself for weeks, just listen to the music on that intro vid

also one of the prettiest games for the snes to be sure 

and finally: kickass steampunk/scifi mashup setting where there is
