i fucking love how casually Toby puts so many trans and nonbinary characters in his games. including characters using it/its. i don't think i realized just how groundbreaking Undertale was in this regard because i was young and hadn’t realized i was Not Cis, but it having multiple nonbinary characters plus a trans man and two trans women is still incredibly rare now

toby is a genius for making spamton trans I'm ngl. lmao i love the fact that so many dudebros who love spamton have no idea he’s a trans guy. by which i mean i wish they would know and accept that fact and still love him but lbr a lot of them would not so
i feel dumb for not realizing he’s trans before ch3 honestly. like it makes so much sense even just considering his many connections and parallels to mettaton. and of course a lot of cis ppl argue that none of this is ‘proof’ of anything but if they think toby fox is unintentionally putting in this. much trans subtext into that many characters they are 1000% coping at this point
and i also think the pipis is going to end up hatching ive thought so from the ch3 release and im surprised more ppl dont seem to think it’s actually going to happen in the game. i am both excited and scared to see the tv-email freak of nature <3
thank you for adding my tags!! i’m also really glad someone cares about this so much! thanks for laying it all out like this and writing it so well; it really deserves to be seen by the whole Deltarune fandom. just, the fact that such a hugely popular character like Spamton who has such a wide appeal to so many people is canonically a queer trans man means so much to me.
i only noticed the Addisons use they/them on my last Snowgrave playthrough a few months back. Noelle has this line referring to the Pink Addison, after she attacks them and traps them in the Freeze Ring while under a trance, and the screen goes black:
and considering Spamton says “once I was like them” i was immediately like. wait. spamton is canonically trans? and in the exact same way Mettaton is (enby/agender-to-male)? that makes so much sense and HOW have more people not already been pointing this out?? it’s not like it’s hidden, that moment happens on every Snowgrave playthrough — it’s just overlooked by the majority of the fandom and it shouldn’t be. i myself somehow missed the implications when i saw it the first couple times. and then i felt like my mind was blown when i first connected that with the mannequin. like, that blue dress is only worn by 2 people in Undertale, both textually trans, and Toby decided to put that on Spamton’s mannequin and add the dialogue about Spamton squirming and not fitting in it. it’s genius honestly.
the dress is literally exclusively associated with trans characters, in both Undertale and Deltarune. obviously there’s Mettaton and the lioness in Undertale, and in Deltarune there’s Kris, who is explicitly nonbinary, being the only character able to equip it, although Ralsei will call the dress “cute” if you try to put it on them, in a nod to them being transfem but not ready to confront it yet; there’s Spamton, obviously; and now this has been even further proven through Pink/Mad Mew Mew in ch5, who, as pointed out in the post, is canonically a trans woman like Mettaton is a trans man.
as this post points out, you can try to give the Spamton mannequin with the dress to Pink/Mad Mew Mew, and the dialogue will say almost the exact same thing it did when you try to put Spamton in it — it says that it “doesn’t fit.” this is significant, as it’s the only armor you can attempt to give her, meaning it was specifically done to draw a parallel to Spamton’s dialogue. i think the phrasing of, “squirmed and won’t fit” versus “doesn’t fit” is important, because it implies Spamton doesn’t want to be put in the dress, while Mew Mew might have liked the dress itself if it had fit. the mannequin as a whole represents both of their pretransition selves (Mew Mew through it being an unmovable, unchangeable dummy, as she was before actually bonding with her body, & Spamton through it being an unremarkable plain white Addison forced into feminine clothing he had no choice in), as well as it simply being a dummy/object, which is something both of them hate being.
the Mad Mew Mew/Spamton parallels in general were also greatly expanded on and called attention to in ch5 (and of course, both of these characters also parallel Kris & their relationship with the player); Pink directly invokes Spamton multiple times by accusing the Fun Gang of wanting to steal her body like a “little grubby puppet gremlin” (even though she did the exact same thing herself, lol), green strings are used to show the struggle between the Darkner and the ghost controlling her, and Mad Mew Mew realizes in the end that she was wrong for trying to control her body, literally saying that she was “puppeting” her. the rest of this dialogue also seems like a parallel to Spamton’s feelings on NEO.

Pink also has an audience for her fight, with a sign that says “Mewers Live” in a callback to TV Time’s “Lightners Live,” while Spamton believed he had his own audience and was back on TV Time having a “comeback special.”
all of this further demonstrates Spamton’s intentional parallels to the Blooks, their transness, & all three of their desires for a dream body that will finally feel like “themselves,” while also demonstrating both Spamton & Darkner Pink’s fight for freedom from being controlled by a more powerful being.
i wanted to add a few other things — even though i know it’s obvious, Spamton saying he’s finally becoming a “real boy,” and having the song in that triumphant moment when he thinks he’s finally achieving his biggest dream even be named “A Real Boy!” is clever to me because it’s simultaneously about him literally becoming “real,” it’s a reference to another long-nosed puppet (Pinocchio), and it’s a reference to his transness. 3 for 1 [specil]! this is also referenced by Pink when she says she wants to be “a real girl!”
i think the fact that Spamton lets only one person besides himself call the pipis “eggs” may be important, too — he confirmed in the Spamton Sweepstakes that he wants only people he’s close with to call them eggs, and he refers to them in general with masculine terms:
“EGGS!? WHAT!? LOOK THAT'S "MR. PIPIS" TO YOU! EGGS... ONLY [friend like me] CAN CALL "THE BOYS" THAT.”
the only person who ever calls a pipis an egg besides Spamton is Tenna, & this is pretty significant. Spamton and Tenna were seemingly raising a pipis as an egg together (Tenna also has the honor of being given a rare female pipis, which are called “Ms. Pipis” by Spamton, and are 1 in 100; Tenna really was extremely important to him.) Tenna was given a pipis because Spamton deeply cared about him and likely actually wanted to start a family with him — he explicitly states he had a kid with Tenna in one of his valentines from the newsletter, Tenna is aware that specific pipis is alive and has Mike sing lullabies to it, and its chirping is a glitchy version of notes from their shared leitmotif (“HEY EVERY !”), so i don’t think it’s really up to interpretation that the pipis is meant to be their child, or at least that they treated it like one. Tenna is most likely the only person Spamton ever gifted an actual pipis to (besides the pipis mod for Cat Petterz that Spamton sent to Noelle, for being the only person to ever read his emails), and his intention was for them to take care of it together.
Tenna seems to be the most important person who had ever been in Spamton’s life, likely not just his first (and probably only) love, but also his first true friend, so he gave him the honor of trusting him with his eggs. i think this can be seen as him trusting Tenna with the knowledge that he’s trans; the check dialogue referring to pipis as clams may very well be because Spamton doesn’t want just anyone to know that they’re his eggs. to most people, they’re just one of his attacks. only the people he appreciates most — which later includes Kris, who’s also openly nonbinary — are allowed to know that they are his eggs & that he’s trans. Tenna was given the responsibility of keeping both that specific pipis and the knowledge that comes with it safe. (I’m also aware that Spamton may have been hiding the fact they’re eggs because of FRIEND, but I think the trans subtext here still applies as well.)
Tenna also literally keeps the pipis in his closet! and if Spamton is not present during this scene, a crowd appears and calls Tenna gross, saying “It’s a shame, who knew Tenna was into this stuff?” which (at least subtextually) implies that Tenna having a pipis is representative of him being in a queer relationship with a trans man (who was also seemingly disliked by everyone except Tenna).
if Spamton gets left behind in chapter 2 or is killed by Noelle, the pipis also gets left behind by Tenna out of shame, and can be killed by us forcing Kris to consume it. if Spamton and Tenna get to meet again, the pipis is protected, tucked away somewhere safe by Tenna; if Spamton is gone, Tenna’s shame and repression grow worse than ever, and can result in him unknowingly letting the pipis — the most precious belonging he has, and the representation of his love for Spamton — die. the queercoding & subtext of this game goes so deep, it’s insane.
edit: something else i realized is that since Addisons are canonically connected to birds through the fact that they (or at least Spamton) apparently create eggs & this being a reference to Megaman’s birds who lay pipi — Spamton being the lone plain white Addison while the rest are colorful is subtextually equating him as the lone “female” of the “males” (although they don’t have literal genders), furthering his innate difference to the rest of the Addisons through his transmasc coding.
