Yarrow's Barrow

My initial reaction to the main character after the first scene was "Oh this guy is an incel" which now that I've finished it, I think is only half true? He has all the makings of an incel but hasn't quite reached that point yet. I picked up pretty early in the movie that Bear is a coward. He fears rejection from the girl he likes. At the beginning of the movie I kinda sympathized with him because I think everyone has had those times where they put their hopes on someone and deep down know they don't feel the same way. Everyone at some point wishes that the person they like would like them back. And Bear does that. He buys a hokey wish making knickknack from a metaphysicals store that he has no reason to think will work and wishes Nikki loved him "more than anything else in the fucking world". Which is a statement I think is important because it shows a lack of self control. Even before this the whole reason he buys the wish knickknack is because he was going to buy a gift for her and got something he wanted instead, but that's neither here nor there.

No I think the real moment Bear becomes the villain is after the dinner scene where he figures out that the wish came true and altered Nikki, he still continues feeding his own wants and fucks her despite none of this being something Nikki ever wanted or asked for. The scene in question is absolutely horrific as it should be I think. He knows what happened now and chooses to continue despite the fact that the Nikki he supposedly cared so much about is not here anymore. Her body is now just a doll for him to take what he wants from it. He's had his little honeymoon phase where he thinks the dream is real and now it's become apparent that he can't keep up with infinite obsessive love. What does he do? He tries to change it so he can keep his toy without all of the uncomfortable parts. At this point he's just completely the villain and any kind of potential sympathy that he had is just completely gone. He kind of earns everything that happens to him from the dinner scene onward to me. It's just a shame other people had to be caught up in his fantasy.
