My name is Nai and I’m a broke-ass unemployable queer creator, and like so many of us I am desperately in need of money. I have weird enough brain wiring that I can’t get past the interview stage of getting a job, so without a major skill I’m kind of sunk in terms of making literally any money at all. I’ve slept on various floors for the past three years.

Specifically, I’m looking to get together about $150 for one of these - I’ve been working on building stenography speed off and on for several years, but due to my financial circumstances, I haven’t been able to get even an NKRO keyboard, which means my speed is capped at about 20 WPM (significantly less than my 52WPM QWERTY). Being able to actually develop stenography skills would give me something marketable and a way to make a living that isn’t reliant on the fickle whims of the art world.

(If you’re asking yourself ‘wtf is stenography’ right now, there’s a better explanation here than I could give without taking over this post.)

I also write fic for a variety of fandoms and run a roleplay over at Dreamwidth, and I desperately need a new computer (as my laptop is from… 2012…).

Meet my nana. She raised me as a child, and was more of a mother to me than my own. She loves me, deeply, without restrictions, and accepted me even after I had come out as trans. She researched what that meant, she asked me about how she should address the cards she sent to me, she… she loves me. And I love her. Of all my family, she’s the only one that’s stuck with me through thick and thin.

On Sunday, February 25th, my nana was found unconscious and unresponsive on the kitchen floor. She is diabetic, and her blood sugar was over 700. However, she remained unconscious even after her blood sugar was brought down to stable levels. An MRI given on Monday the 26th determined that she had suffered a stroke in her occipital lobe. This means that if she wakes up, she could have difficulty with swallowing or vision problems.

But if the stroke was severe enough, she might never regain consciousness. On Tuesday, she will be given an EEG to determine brain activity.

The reality of the situation is that I need to fly to her, either to be there if she wakes up, or… for her funeral.

Flights from Minneapolis to Indianapolis range from $300 to $400, which I just don’t have. I don’t get paid until the 9th, and there’s no guarantee she’ll be able to hold on until then.

I’m raising money now, so that if something happens between now and then, I can leave the next day.
