I grew up in Seattle and moved from Seattle to Philly in 2020, Philly to Kansas City in 2021, and Kansas City to NYC in 2023. I left Seattle because it was difficult and painful to watch my home become gentrified and taken over by the tech industry and I needed perspective. The city I was raised in didn't/doesn't exist anymore and it made me an angry and bitter person. And I needed distance from my family and others.

At this point in time I feel a lot of gratitude and pride that the place I'm from is a refuge for others who are fleeing hateful and closed-minded parts of the country. I hope anyone who isn't a MAGA transphobic racist christofascist chud feels welcome and at home in the PNW.

pros - extremely beautiful, easy access to nature from cities and vice versa, different but nice tax benefits in WA and OR, better wages, progressive politics

cons - expensive, reality of increasingly destructive + dangerous wildfires and potential for earthquakes, there are pockets and strongholds of white supremacy and hatred that thrive because they are the outgroup, seattle specific: tech culture creates a transient population and it's difficult to make friends or build community when people are only there for the paycheck

I absolutely love this blog for many reasons, but one of those reasons is that it’s so fun to try to guess what state a house is in before I get to the bottom of the post. It feels really good to nail it, and I can sometimes even get the city. It’s such a fun little geography/culture/architecture check, I recommend everyone who follows and is familiar with a good portion of the US try it out :)
