You're so good at backgrounds, how do you do it 😭
I suck so so much at explaining stuff especially because my creative process is very chaotic, but I'll try to at least give some tips I keep in mind when doing backgrounds.
Backgrounds are scary, I don't know when I hit the moment when mine started to actually look good. But I guess a very important thing when working on them is to study photography and other artworks and figuring out (either via tutorials or on your own) how did the artist achieve an effect that looks interesting to you.
I don't hide that the art of Gwent has influenced me a lot, I study their cards artwork a lot when I try to make an attempt at making something beyond a character in front of a white background and want to try my hand at rendering.
Brushes. I recently started using more brushes from this set (it's for Photoshop, idk if other programs can import them 1:1)
It's very useful in my sketch phase when I want to compose the background.
Then comes the most chaotic part of trying to make small details. Blending, and covering the edges of the brushes I used in the sketch phase, so it doesn't look unnatural (exclusive preview of my upcoming artwork)
A very useful tip I once got and I love it very much - the further something is in the background the less contrast it should have and less saturated it should be. You can observe it especially when you view pictures of mountains. Like here for example:
Observe how the color changes the further the object is.
Another veeery important thing is. The further away the object is, the less details a human eye can catch. It's supposed to be a background for your scene, it's not supposed to take away the attention from what is happening. Background is a support, not the main act.
Build your color palette. A consistent color palette will save you a lot of time.
And like, it will suck at first, but just like with any skill, you have to make a few failed attempts to start getting a hang of something. Time, patience and practice are important when it comes to art.
