“Hey, Gamora. I am so sorry to bother you at work. I was wondering if you want to go to the mask ball with me? It sounds super cheesy. I think it could be so much fun. “ He said in one big breath. “Please?”

“It could be nice to get some time off and I heard the mask ball was supposed to be pretty fun so why not?” Gamora mused aloud with a smile, turning her head to look over at Peter. “Also, trust me you definitely aren’t bothering me.” she assured him, reaching out to squeeze his arm gently.

Valkyrie sat at the bar, hoping something would happen. It had been a slow Tuesday night, with her job feeling pointless. There were no fights, no underage children trying to sneak in, and certainly no harassments of any kind. She hated boring nights with a passion. It left her feeling antsy and ready to fight. Seeing a suspicious figure in the corner, she walked over to observe. “And what exactly do you think you’re doing here?”

When there was a lull at the bar and no patrons taking up her time, Gamora used that as an opportunity to at least try to clean up the bar a bit. There usually were quite a few spills that no one told her about and they were almost always beer spills that had been sitting there a bit too long. She furrowed her eyebrows slightly as she inspected one of the spills, stepping back a little to see if the damage was actually as bad as it seemed. Before she could actually take account for it, she heard Valkyrie’s voice and turned her head towards the woman. “I’m working, trying to clean up the place the best I can while we’re not as busy. What else would I be doing?”

“Thank you for your never-ending support,” Maria said with a soft huff of laughter.  She’d had enough to drink now that she was starting to feel lighter, but honestly lighter for her was just barely light enough to feel like she could move through the air, and not like she was trying to push herself through some kind of molasses all of the time. “I can think of worse people to be stuck with, Gamora,” she said and smiled softly.  "It’s only professional curiosity that stops me from trying to entice you back home, honestly.  No one wants to be hit on at work, and I’m nothing if not a gentleman,“ she said, and laughed after she finished, wondering if she was getting a little drunker than she meant to.  She had a high tolerance, but then maybe she’d had more to drink than she thought.  She tried to assess the number of empty glasses on the counter but then Gamora had probably taken some of them away by now.  "I don’t know why I even suggested it,” Maria said and laughed a little internally at herself.  "This technically is my second chance here.  But it’s kind of all…turning out the same.  Maybe once you’re fucked up, you’re just fucked up forever.“

A few of the usuals had began to scatter themselves, only leaving a handful of people along with her and Maria left in the bar. Last call was still another hour or so away, and it seemed like the group at the end of the bar were pretty satisfied for the time being. As dull as weekdays were, they were quite the easy night to deal with, especially if it meant she could talk to her favorite cop in Deerfield for a few hours, that just made the whole thing even better. “Can I be honest with you, Maria?” she asked, the hint of a grin on her lips. “Out of all the people I’ve ever encountered at the bar, you’re one of the very few people I would let take me to their home. It’s probably because you are quite the gentlemen.” she said teasingly. Given, most of the people she dealt with were drunk assholes, so they were the last on her list for potential people to sleep with, that was for sure. The only other person recently was the cute pizza delivery guy she’d come into contact days prior. “I suppose I could say the same, my parents really did a number on me. But everything I’m doing here, with the shelter, trying to help out those in need are trying to counteract that. To make amends for how shitty they were, the least I can do is try right?”

“Mmm, you don’t know, I might change my mind and start going for the burly men.  Any day now,” she teased lightly.  "But then that would be giving the men in this town the satisfaction.  I didn’t go through all of the hazing down at the station to back down now,“ she said and smirked.  Gamora was making her another drink before Maria even asked for it, and that warmed a part of Maria that she didn’t even think she remembered having.  She took a small sip of it, slowing down a little now and sighed.  "Fuck,” she said softly but emphatically, the grin on her face something lopsided and not exactly happy either.  "Me either.  As much as I say I hate it.  I guess it’s home.  Even if I do dream of beaches and frozen cocktails somewhere far away from here from time to time.“  She chuckled.  "If I ever get it in my head to run away to Aruba, I’m taking you with me."  Maria sighed suddenly.  “Do you ever regret it?  That you didn’t ever take the chance to leave it all behind and start something new?”

“Ah yes, because burley men are exactly your type. I’m so glad that you were finally able to come to terms with this, I truly don’t know how you’ve held it out this long.” Gamora grinned, pouring herself a bit more to drink and knocking it back with ease, turning around a little so that she could put it into the sink. “Fair point, I really wouldn’t want you to have to go through that. So I guess you’re just stuck with me now, huh? I don’t think you’ll be getting rid of me anytime soon, Hill.” Nor did Gamora really want her to, all of the regulars tended to be nightmares but her. In fact, she was more of a dream than anything. “Perfect, I couldn’t imagine getting away from here with anyone else, it only makes sense for us to make that big break together.” she said, moving to squeeze her hand briefly before withdrawing it again. “Some days, but I feel like I have so much history here that it’s kind of.. Difficult to just start something new. Truth be told, the idea of doing something completely different scares me a bit.” she said with a small laugh.

Loki could see the genuine care she held for the people. He didn’t think the homeless rate was all to terrible. He knew however he should not be naive. He could be one to turn an eye on something like homelessness because it did make him uncomfortable to deal with. “Got it.” He said when she went on about the soup and for how long. He put his gloves on. “How’s Nebula?” He asked. “You do know I try to give her money, she won’t take it.” He said. “I am trying.” He didn’t want gamora to think too ill of him, although he did leave her. Which was shitty but healthy. “Alright where in line should I stand?” He asked. “It is kind what you do here.”

When she was younger, there was very few things that Gamora could rely on. Her mother was vacant in her life even when she was around, however the homeless shelter they stayed at proved to be her own saving grace. She understood that a lot of people didn’t quite get it, her passion for a place like this but it held a lot of value to her deep down. If she could just help one person the way that she was helped when she was younger, Gamora would be able to consider that a win. She didn’t even want to imagine what her life would’ve been like without a place like that. “She’s good, stressed but good.” she said and let out a soft sigh, shaking her head a bit. “But I really don’t think the technicalities of what goes on between you and my sister are what I want to talk about right now, because either way I am going to fiercely defend my sister and I’m not quite sure if you want to sit through that.” she stated matter of factly, looking down the line with narrowed eyes. “You can either pass out the utensils or scoop out one of the soups. We had a great amount of donations this month, so we were able to treat the patrons to a little extra this week.” She just hoped things were able to stay that way.  “The homeless shelter means a lot to me, I have to keep it up and running.”

Peter gives me free pizza, so I’ll go with Peter. Thor seems like he has a lot going on right now. Still pretty hot though. 

Only if you’re unsure that you’d have a better time at the strip club rather than coming over to my place.

“I can only really offer protection to one bartender at a time, and of course I’m going to pick the prettiest one,” she said with a sweet smile, something wry twisting one corner of it down slightly. Maria huffed out a bit of a laugh and found herself nodding along in a kind of commiseration with Gamora.  "You aren’t lying,“ she mused, her fingers tapping along the side of her glass, some nervous habit she’d picked up somewhere or the other.  Her father, probably, she could remember him, two or three beers in, tapping away at the side of the bottle.  Later, when he started peeling the labels, that was when Maria knew-  She paused, forcefully stilling her fingers and gave Gamora a small smile.  "You know, I grew up in Chicago.  And as far as I was concerned it wasn’t even in the state of Illinois.  I told myself I’d never find out what the rest of it looked like and here I am.  I guess we’re all stuck, tossing and turning in the flames, getting all crispy.”

“I’m flattered, truly, although I don’t really think I have much competition. Most of the other bartenders around here are burly men, but the compliment is still very much appreciated.” Gamora teased, moving a bit to the side to prepare another drink for Maria, the process almost becoming a second nature as she made it without really even thinking through it. She slid the glass in Maria’s direction, nodding along to what she had to say. “It feels like I’ve been all around Illinois, but never anywhere else. So you’re right, I guess once we get here we’re just kind of stuck. Truth be told, I don’t even know what I’d do with myself if I wasn’t in this dumpster fire. It’s one of the weird consistent things in my life that I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
