For all the cringing and disliking of mermaid Stede I think it’s important to note that mermaids instilled fear in pirates because they believed mermaids caused shipwrecks and would drag men to the depths of the ocean. Ed seeing Stede as a mermaid as he’s letting himself be pulled down is symbolic of his fear of vulnerability (Hornigold ghost emphasizes this) and how he sees Stede as dangerous because he let himself be open. A fantastic call to this is Stede telling Izzy “you sent him to doggy heaven.” Referencing a time where Ed’s vulnerability was visible enough he had to kill Stede to cover up.
