me hanging out with black people in the summer: “aye, yall don’t forget to put on sunscreen”
them:
@flipflibberinflippinghell
Use the Walgreens Brand which is pretty cheap and it does wonders and doesn’t leave me with a white cast. And I’m dark as hell so I hate looking ashy but not all sunscreens are made equally and it’s one of the better ones I’ve used.
Wait cocoa/shea butter and coconut oil don’t protect you from the sun we really do need sunscreen??
Yea fam. All that “we don’t need sunscreen” shit is a myth. Combine that with the fact that most dermatologists don’t know how to spot skin cancer in Black people and it’s a nasty combination.
Yeah, it’s harder for us to get it but when we do it’s deadly. I know two people who died of skin cancer, both were Black.
“While incidence of melanoma is higher in the Caucasian population, a July 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed it is more deadly in people of color. African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.”

Sorry about the link, I’m on mobile. But this is from August 2016, which I know isn’t the most recent but it’s still SUPER IMPORTANT. Y’all please wear sunscreen. With Google it’s even easy to find smaller, Black-owned brands.
https://blackgirlsunscreen.com/ is Black-owned!
I’m gonna second the rec for Black Girl Sunscreen, it’s affordable, Black owned, and immediately melts into the skin without leaving any gross white cast.

In a city of shadows, where capes clash with crime and every heartbeat risks a war, she is the quiet constant — the warmth beneath the armor, the calm within the chaos, the fire when love isn’t enough.
“Mother of Bats” is a heartfelt and character-driven drabble series chronicling the life of the Reader, the woman who married Batman and became the unshakable mother to Gotham’s fractured flock: Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian — and every stray soul the Bat Family pulls in.
This isn’t a story about crime-fighting. It’s about what happens after.
After the blood is scrubbed off Kevlar. After the masks are dropped at the door.
After the mission ends — and the healing begins.
At its core, this series is about:
•Softness in a hard world — showing strength not through violence, but through love that does not bend.
•Motherhood as a quiet revolution — fierce, messy, unconditional, and deeply personal.
•Marriage to the Bat — intimacy built in whispered bandage changes, rooftop arguments, shared grief, and stubborn joy.
•Chosen family — how a woman becomes home to broken boys and a brooding man who thought he could never deserve one.

For those who have missed it, a tourist in Hawaii decided it would be fun to chuck a rock (a BIG rock) at a monk seal. He missed, but he was captured on video, and when told it was illegal to interfere with them, said "I'm rich, I can pay the fine."
Is the best part that he got doxxed? No.
Is the best part that he got tracked down by a local and beaten? No.
Arrested on state at federal charges, looking at up to 5 years and 50K? Nope.
The best part is the local city council's reaction.
And the best part of that is the look on the attorney's face.
More of this please, everywhere.
After the incident, another video went viral showing what appeared to be that man getting a beating. The Maui Police Department said they had no record of any reports of disorderly conduct or assault related to the monk seal incident.
Even the local police are being cool about this.

Hey y'all why are writers always cold?
...why?
They're always surrounded by drafts!
How many mystery writers does it take to change a lightbulb?
Oh god.
How many?
Two! One to change the bulb, and the other to give it an unexpected twist at the end!
What do writers have for breakfast?
Coffee?
Synonym buns!
Where do all the struggling writers live?
How are you coming up with all these?
Where?
Writer's Block!
What do writers suffer from each spring?
(I've heard a lot of them over the years.)
Allergies. Next question.
you were close; A case of allegories
Why are writers always in great shape?
Circular prose
Nope! It's because we're always running out of ideas!
Did you hear about the famous writer who turned out to be a fraud?
I did not
His life had it's prose and cons...
Why is editing a better job than writing?
It's more rewording?
Correct! I am out of jokes. :(

Maleficent dug through the books that held copies of her memories, showing animated images of her past.
Crowley..
Crowley..
Crowley!
The name gnawed in her brain, but it was unclear if it was because the name once belonged to an enemy or friend, but there was something about that masked man that triggered something.
She snapped the book shut, a red tack mark appearing on her head as shouts and bangs were heard behind her closed doors.
This would be so much easier if those overprotective fools would just shut up.
But she could understand such urges like the rest of the seven. She too was worried about her dear little dreamer being the only girl at this all-boys academy; after all, her Calliope was no doubt beautiful and would soon be a great ruler over the magical world.
Unworthy knaves will no doubt try to take her as a bride, as if anyone is worthy of being her official husband, much less a consort. If any one of them were to hurt her pretty head, I WILL—
The sudden pounding on her door brought her out of her musing; with a heavy sigh, she brushed down her dress and put her books to the side.
She opens it to the sight of Iracebeth, looking ruffled, her black hair sticking from underneath her crown. The horned woman raised an eyebrow at the other.
“Rough day?” she asked sarcastically, causing the other queen's face to grow red as she huffed.
“Do you think you could pull yourself away from your trips down memory lane and help me and the other girls with the boys’ tempers?” the queen gritted out, grinding her teeth while doing so to help control her temper.
Maleficent rolled her eyes. “Really, it’s been nearly a full day, and they're still ranting and raving, are they?” She slammed her door behind her as the two women went into a large study that had roars rattling the door, with puffs of smoke leaking from underneath the door. Maleficent scrubs her face with her hands before pushing the doors open.
If the magical endless mansion they inhabited was not somehow enchanted to stay intact, then Maleficent had no doubt the room would be rubble by now. With how much wild magic was oozing from the three raving men in the center while the other three women were trying (and failing) to calm them down just a tad.
“Well, the three of you shut it; you're starting to give me a headache!” Maleficent all but growled out, causing three sets of eyes to glare at her; Hades brushed a hand through his flames as though he were slicking them back.
“Oh, do forgive me, horn queen, but in case you've forgotten, our little girl, who was under constant threat of being attacked by men, is now currently trapped in an ALL-BOY SCHOOL!” His whole body became a red flame at this point, but Maleficent just looked at him blankly while he panted. When his flame went out, she just looked over to the four women that were mirroring her face.
“The whole place smells of dark magic. Who knows what powers these colleges hold and teach the student body? She could be tricked, hunted, or even cursed!” Scar in his lion form was pacing.
“Those boys will take one look at our little charmer and immediately try to get with her for the sake of the raw power she has!” Jafar rambled, tapping his staff on the floor.
While the other women were much more calm, they did have some worry on their faces.
She pinched her brow, inhaling. “Listen, Calliope is a strong woman and can handle herself,” she said, looking at the rest of them. “Besides, she has us to help her; there is no way that she will get hurt.” She then snapped her fingers, and a circle of green fire started to swirl around her.
“In fact, I’ll go check on her, and you will all see that she is perfectly fine.”
The flames engulfed her and made her disappear from the room.
As she opens her eyes, she looks at her baby being crushed by two boys, covered in dust and surrounded by broken crystals.
“Ah well, maybe there should be some worrying.”

Once Upon An Orphan
In an ancient room on top of a black tablecloth laid a thick leather-bound book, the paper edges look to be made of gold, a dark blue bookmark tail peeks out, the title letters looks to be made by silver ink, and decorating the cover corners are blue roses, the book opens to an illustration of a worn looking cradle.
Once upon a time a young infant was left upon the doorsteps of an old church, in a very small old town, nothing to the babe's name except a ripped piece of paper that stated “Calliope” nestled beside her was a very rusted and broken pocket watch.”
The young infant was personally raised by the old reverend mother Maria of the church but this changed when the kind mother died in her sleep when young Calliope was just 10 years old. The church's new mother was a corrupt woman who turned a blind eye to the greed of the priest and the cruelty of the fellow sister towards the young girl.
The villagers also turned their back on the girl as she showed no real magical talent like the mayor’s children, who were deemed to be the village’s saving grace, leaving no child wishing to befriend the poor girl in favor of getting in the personal circle of the three.
To the outside world it seems that the orphan girl was now just a typical maid who was alone, but this could not be farther from the truth.
For those who go unseen are the ones who have the most adventures, of course.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a room at the lowest level of the church by the basement, with one window high up to let in some light, but not only was the sunlight being let in, three glowing blue orbs also pushed through the window pane and gathered around a small bed where a figure was curled up. The orb in the middle bounced on it, making the bundle move a bit; the one on the left side joined in with the middle, which made the lump giggle. Acting like a signal, all three orbs started to bounce on it; finally the blanket was thrown back as the occupant started to giggle harder.
Wearing a simple tank top and sleeping shorts, a young girl appeared — her skin was an olive shade, her hair was wrapped in a large bandana , and a few dark brown strands popped out from under the fabric. She stretched her arm over her head, popping her back and yawning. The three orbs swirled around her, and the girl huffed at them.
“Did you three really have to wake me so early every day?” she grumbled, undoing her head wrap and letting her shoulder length curls wrap around her oval face, rubbing her blue eyes as the orbs shifted and swirled in a tornado-like cone.
Forming three human spirits.
The one that was on the left side, now looked like a woman in her early 40s. She wore a dress that resembled one from the year 1950, her hair in an updo that resembles the time. She giggled behind one of her translucent gloved hands. The one on the far right of the three was a cat beastman in his 60s. His time period clothes were from the very early 1900s. His clothes were simple and fine, typical for a salesman. The middle figure though was an old woman dressed in the attire of a proper nun. Despite her appearance, she was technically the youngest of the three spirits.
“Well kiddo, it’s either us three, or that horrid woman,” the younger appearing woman argued, picking up a wooden wide-tooth comb and starting to brush the curls , making them bounce and pop more. “She’s right, lil missy, and we are much nicer,” the man flicked his tail tip across her nose in amusement. “Now Walter, with your teasing, I wouldn’t say you’re quite nice,” the woman fired back, shooing him away. “Well at least I don’t constantly worry about being prissy and pretty like somebody,” the woman bristled, and the two started to bicker.
The nun cleared her throat,
“Donna, Walter, now is not the time for your little feuds” she floated over to the bed and sat down next to her. “Besides, it is our little Calliope birthday.” Her cold hand patted the live one. Calliope just sighs. “I’m only 16 now, Mother Maria; besides, if anything, it’s just another day for me.” Suddenly, the church bell rang, echoing throughout the town.
“And there the bell,” Donna huff, giving the curls one last comb through as the Reverend Mother shoo Walter away. Calliope stood, taking a crack pitcher that had ice-cold water, pouring it into a bowl.
“Honestly, it's the 21st century, and those fools are making her use a pitcher to get clean up in, while they hog those nice hot showers for hours at a time” Donna complained as the girl started to scrub her skin.
“I do get to use them,” Calliope brought up scrubbing her face. Donna just scoffed, “After all, the hot water is used up,” as she and mother Maria were setting out the clothes that were practically the girl's uniform.
A black knee-length skirt that was covered in patches, a long-sleeve grey shirt at the end of its sleeves were starting to become raggy, and a pair of worn black flats.
“You know I overheard that new head nun is talking about ordering a whole new wardrobe for the clergy” the younger looking ghost went on as the teen got dressed.
“Oh, if only I had been wiser, when I was choosing a replacement,” the mother sighed out loud as Donna waved Walter back in.
“Are we bitching about the clergy?,” he immediately said as his form entered through the window. “Who else would be bitching about it?” Donna shot back.
“You two watch your language,” Maria hushed as the large church bell started to ring again. She placed a cold kiss on the young girl's forehead.
As the girl quickly left the room to start her chores,
7 AM, the usual morning lineup:
Start on the chores and sweep 'til the floor's all clean.
While sweeping, she opened a church window, placing some seeds on the window sill before shutting it again, as a few ravens started to gather around.
Polish and wax, do laundry and mop and shine up.
She smelled herself and recoiled at the smell of cleaning products that lingered on her as she bustled around the kitchen, placing all nine food-covered dishes to the side as the nine members of the clergy, while the new reverend mother looked over the dishes and shoos her off, the other eight started to laugh and talk. She eventually came back to a mess on the table and the floor.
Sweep again and by then it's like 8:15.
And so I’ll read a book, or maybe two or three.
Calliope managed to sneak into the church library, which was meant to be a study area for the betterment of the members, but it’s deserted. She grabs three random books and starts going through them. Four ravens of different ages—one looked to be a senior, two were adults, and one a fresh-out-of-nest little one. They crowd on the library windowsill to watch her; she smiles, opening it and letting them perch on or around her.
I’ll add a few new drawings to my gallery.
Her curly hair was tied back as she was seated in the church graveyard, sketching on paper, the ravens still attach
I'll play with birds and sow and cook and basically
Calliope plays with the raven fledging, sowing the tears of garments of the clergy, and then looks towards the window.
Just wondering, when will my life begin?
The bell tolls signaling her to move once more.
Then after lunch, it's laundry and dusting and baking
The girl runs around with baskets, and then in the kitchen gets covered in flour.
Village shopping and a bit of a nap and then dust
While Calliope is shopping in the village markets she sees a crowd gathered around three teens, the mayor’s children who were performing small magic acts, lighting fireworks, making a drop of water float, and swirling a ribbon around herself. Calliope just rolled her eyes as she walked past the flower box and with a wave she helped them bloom towards the sun.
Organizing and restocking, candle making
Calliope is rummaging through a storage room, placing items on shelves and such, then she is surrounded by candles, sweating hard.
Then I'll stretch, maybe sketch
Have a snack, look at some dresses
Her body lets out cracks and pops as she moves making the three spirits around her wince, Calliope once again sketches in the graveyard the three spectrums are around her this time Donna and Walter are looking at what she is sketching while Maria is just enjoying the company. While in the kitchen she steals a sandwich while the clergy members pass by. The girl during one small break looks through an old magazine looking at dresses and she is kicking her feet and smiling.
And I'll read more books if I have time to spare
Once again she was back in the library and it started to doze off but the ravens poke her awake.
I'll explore the church some more, I'm sure there's secrets somewhere
Calliope wanders the halls trying loose looking bricks and pulling slightly on old looking candle holders that are mounted to the walls.
And then I'll wash and wash and scrub and scrub myself
The shower curtain is seen as the sounds of furiously scrubbing noises and teeth chattering coming from behind it.
Stuck in the same place I've always been
And I'll keep wonderin' and wonderin'
And wonderin' and wonderin'
When will my life begin?
She finally returned to her room and changed back into her pjs lying down in her old bed.
The three ghosts once again appeared; each one pressing a kiss to her forehead before returning to pure balls of light and leaving from where they came. She looked out her single window seeing the four ravens all nestled together.
“Tomorrow morning, nothing will change
Just like always after my birthday each year
What would it be like to be free from this place
One day when I’m older, I will finally know”
Calliope reached under her pillow pulling out the pocket watch she has had since she was a baby.
She looked at the rusted cover before she started to sing another tune.
“A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you will lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true”
The pocket watch was suddenly shiny silver with seven colored gems lining the cover; its front had an image of a bare, expanding tree. She smiled at the image, and fell asleep holding it to her chest.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, but there’s a small detail I have yet to mention: this child was special because of how her soul was connected to seven others, not in the way that is romanticized in romance books but in the way a parent is connected to their child.
When the babe was brought into the world, seven old souls were given a chance to once again live. Each one was once a feared villain, but this wee babe for some strange reason melted their hearts, vowing to guide and teach the child.
The first night at the church, rain was pouring down outside. In the room of Mother Maria, a little baby in an old crib stared wide-eyed as the old woman slept on. Her bright eyes looked with wonder as she saw a swirl of colorful orbs floating in front of her, using her tiny hands to try to grab them.
"She was so tiny; not even Jasmine was this tiny as an infant,” a voice spoke.
“Is she eating enough? "Surely one bottle isn't enough for this guppy," another said.
"Sssh, we woke her up.”
The lights faded away, and the baby became sleepy again, closing her blue eyes.
In a large dining room that had seven different-colored doors lining the hall, at the head of the table sat a woman dressed in black with ashen-gray skin and black hair. She was gently cradling the baby in her arms, slightly rocking her, looking down at the bundle with soft eyes.
“Come on! Stop hogging the little sparker," a man with blue flames for hair and smoke where his feet were meant to be complained, trying to grab the baby from the woman, who gave a small hiss at him.
“It’s true you've even been hogging the little apple, locking you and her together in your room as well.” Another woman spoke; she was dressed in a regal gown that flowed behind her.
A dark chuckle came from another. “Says the woman who created a full wardrobe filled with baby clothes that she can’t even use unless she is here with us.” He was a dark-skinned man with a long scar on one of his eyes on his head; he had a pair of lion ears with a matching tail that flicked with irritation; he wanted to hold the little cub too.
“If I recall correctly, when we first met her, you scurried back in fear from the little charmer,” the man across from him spoke in his hand, holding a large serpent-shaped staff.
"Ah, that reminds me. Has anyone figured out why we are connected to this little bunny?” Another woman, dressed in a wide gown that had a mix of red and black colors, had a small golden crown placed on her head.
“Does it even matter now?” the head woman spoke, not looking away from the baby. “This dreamer is connected to us, and we are connected to her for a reason; I believe it is a good thing.”
“I agree that this little guppy is destined for a powerful future if all of us are with her.” At the end of the table sat a woman whose legs were replaced with octopus tentacles.
“With us, she can become the most powerful sorcerer in the world,” the snake staff holder declared.
This made the others cheer in agreement.
"No," the head woman spoke, making them all turn to face her, placing a soft kiss on the baby's forehead, who giggled at the sensation.
“The queen of kings.”
Calliope's eyes blink open; her little room has transformed into a large chamber. She now rested on a canopy bed; the sheets had stars and moons printed on them, and with a smile, she arose from the comfortable fabrics. The room walls had forest and floral imagery and all that seemed to move like it was alive. Lighting the room were wall sconces that were in the shape of purple tulips that had a low glow.
Walking over to the desk vanity, the way she looked in the dreamscape was different in many ways.
Her curls were held with a silken bonnet, there were no dark shadows under her eyes, and she was even plumper.
The vanity was covered in an array of combs, creams, serums, and perfumes that she could only dream about.
Literally
Her favorite part of the room was the wardrobe she opened, revealing beautiful dresses, skirts, and other lovely clothes. With a smile, she chose a high-waisted dark green skirt that had a light green sash tied around the waist and a mint green folded-collar blouse.
She let out a deep breath and opened the door, stepping out to the hallways.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While the girl slept, the three spirits watched from their gravestones, looking disheartened.
“That poor girl, you know without her that church would crumble down.” Walter grumbled as he looked down at his freshly tended gravestone; she worked so hard on it, making it look clean and neat.
“Well, there's not much we can do; they'll just exorcise us, and then she'll be completely alone,” Donna sighed as she looked over to Maria, who was quiet as she petted one of the five ravens who cawed sympathetically towards the old mother, but then the nun looked out into the dirt road, and she pointed.
“There is a strange light coming,” she said, and there was a green light getting bigger. It was growing brighter as the sound of hoofbeats got louder. Eventually the object came into view: a sickly-looking horse pulling a hearse carriage. It eventually stopped right in front of the church.
“Oh dear, has someone died?” Donna questioned, looking at the carriage; Walter shook his head, tail flickering.
“If that’s the case, there would have been a commotion in the village, right?”
The horse let out a haunting whinny, the carriage door opened, and two glowing, vapor-like hands came from it. They reached from the carriage and went through the small window to Calliope's room.
Donna gasped as the five crows started to circle, cawing and panicking. Maria also stood, nearly rushing the carriage, but Walter stopped them with a raised hand.
“Look, that symbol on the carriage.” He pointed to a crest that showed a raven with wings spread in flight; in its talons it held two wands, and hanging from its throat was a pendant of sorts in the shape of a key.
“I know exactly what this is; it’s for Night Raven College. This is the Black Carriage; it brings the new students to the school. One of my buddies from when I was alive who went there told me about it!” he exclaimed just as the hands started to return carrying a coffin.
“Why, then that means Calliope has been chosen for it; I remember it being one of the most prestigious magical schools in the land!” Donna cheered the crows, copying their own excited caws.
Maria wipes her eyes, and she claps her hands in thanks.
“Finally, after all this time, our little Calliope has been given the chance she always deserved.”
The three spirits and bird cheered until Donna stopped suddenly.
“Wait, isn’t Night Raven College an all-boys school?” she started.
“Meaning that Calliope will be the only girl surrounded by teenage boys who are learning extremely powerful spells,” Walter added.
“Oh god, we need to follow her,” Maria finished.
The carriage doors slam closed, and the horse takes off again, the three spirits gaping at each other before quickly jolting up to race after the carriage, the crows following closely behind them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calliope gazed at the strawberry and cream cake in front of her, covered in 16 candles she grinned at.
“Well, go on, my little dreamer, make a wish,” her “Mère” spoke, stroking her hair.
Closing her blue eyes, she took a deep breath, and blowing hard, she heard the cheers of her parents.
Suddenly the room lights started to flicker; she looked up, turning towards her “Mère,” who was looking around the room.
“Someone is casting old magic nearby,” was what she said.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suddenly darkness filled Calliope's vision, and everything went truly black.
The last thing Calliope heard was a voice that was male and rough with a raspy voice. “For me, for them, for you, we are all running out of time no matter what; never let go of my hand, my little songbird.” It felt familiar and yet so strange to her.

A Princess At A School For Villains ch 1
Do you have any voice claims for any of your characters? (Mainly Steve I really like your Steve)
If so what are they?
MINECRAFT OC VOICE CLAIMS TIME!!
i love voice claims time cuz really its just an excuse to share music I like. Now just to clarify these are not like set in stone or 100% accurate, this is just 'if i HAD to pick a voice, this is what I'd choose'.
Anyways, linking to youtube vid timestamps
Steve: this , need a voice thats kinda grizzly but they purposefully use it in a soft manner (usually). Can't pick whether I'd want a Swedish or a Greek accent and the song gave me Croatian so uhh-
Jean: I will never decide but if I could fuse Smaug's voice with this with this (this song was shown to me by Seven ( @e40536 ) and its literally about Jean and the AU) then we got something
Nil: this (the main singer in the verses) and this
Polly: this (this song is literally about her btw this is her song)
also bonus, but duet for Polly and Nil: this (mostly for Nil)
Vinny: this , and/or this (song to hype polly up)
Johnny: this
Walda: the only one with no song attached, but if I could somehow fuse this and this (the wolf)
For the Illagers as a whole, they sound like THIS. (if you're an Illager enthusiast LISTEN TO HEILUNG. GOD. JUST LISTEN TO THEIR TRACKS I DON'T CARE THEY'RE TEN MINS LONG, DO IT) Another good example
And villagers... please listen to THIS and think of them. Just do it. Oh and-
Librarian: courtesy of @e40536 once again, THIS
I NEED to know so much more about the illagers. does polly know vinny's dead? does he know how he died? what happened to johnny? what happened to him after the mansion raid? what happened to polly after the mansion raid? your au is driving me fully insane TELL ME MORE
(if polly dies, if johnny kills him we will be meeting at the denny's parking lot)
I shall now take this ask as an opportunity to blab about Steve's Mansion raid. Polly witnesses Vinny's death, and the death of pretty much everyone in that Mansion. It all came down to them, Johnny and their leader, Walda.
And because it's fucking COOL, it's on the rooftop. Thunderstorm. The mansion is on fire, this is the last stand. Almost everyone is dead and there are other Mansions but this was POLLY's tribe damnit ROME IS BURNING.
Steve is up top, injured, gotten the best off after Walda actually used the Totems properly (with fellow illagers as sacrifices), just one fang bite and they'll be gone again. Polly, the little sharpshooter they are, takes aim at Steve to help out.
And then they think.
They kill Steve. Then what? They'll just return stronger.
They die to Steve, lay their life for the empire like how the Evokers taught them to. And then what? Vinny died believing this, and it was without fanfare or meaning.
Polly has been at the mercy of not just Steve but a Villager of all people, and both let them live. What are they going to do with this life?
Steve takes the opportunity and kills the Evoker, and Polly flees by leaping off the roof into the water below, leaving Johnny behind as their witness.
Seeing everything just went from bad to worse, Johnny flees too to live to fight another day. He has to reunite with his own first. Polly... is not going to do that.
And god, my imaginary fuckin animatic with all this.. oohh... OOOHHHHHFFUUUCKKK 1:44 WHERE POLLY SWITCHES HER AIM OUUUUGHHHH- anyways. did this answer all of it? ... eh good enough.
