Daughter of Sly and '90s model, Jennifer Flavin, this kid was born with star-quality genes. Stallone, who recently signed with IMG Models, credits her mom for her work ethic. 

“She has taught me to show up on time and be willing to do what it takes to deliver the photographers vision,” Stallone tells Vogue; “arrive a little bit early, stay a little bit later, and work as hard as you can in between.”

In the last few years, we’ve heard a lot about cultural appropriation. Music festivals have banned the wearing of native headdresses, SnapChat was forced to pull down a filter that promoted blackface and numerous celebrities have faced backlash for everything from wearing their hair in corn rows to sporting a bindi. But what if there was a way to enjoy a craft from another culture without being offensive?

That’s the drive behind the Manitobah Mukluks Storyboot School, a “non-profit, national indigenous artisan-run program that seeks to showcase and teach the art of mukluk-making to aboriginal youth and non-aboriginal visitors in the hopes of preserving this tradition for generations to come.”

Partnered with the TreadRight Foundation, which promotes the maintenance of heritage arts, the school recently opened up a new location in Toronto offering all Canadians an opportunity to learn about the ancient craft of mukluk-making.

“The goal of the school is to help an age old art be passed on to another generation,” says Waneek Horn Miller, the school’s director, and former Mohawk Olympian and assistant Chef de Mission at the Pan Am Games. 

“It’s important for indigenous youth to see the beauty and value in our crafts. Seeing things like beadwork, which would be common at a pow wow walking down the street of a city like Toronto -- being cool, fashionable and mainstream -- can make a big difference in a youth’s perception of their culture in general.”

Sessions are offered weekly and will teach how to properly measure a foot, sew together the boot and the art of beading. Classes are taught by two indigenous artisans whose skills have been learned from their ancestors. The hope is that the school will not only help sustain an indigenous craft and offer a cross–cultural exchange between indigenous and non-indigenous people, but it will also create real opportunities and life skills for aboriginal artisans to showcase their culture to a wide, global audience. 

“The goal is to promote and celebrate the success of Canada’s aboriginal people.”

Morena Diaz knows a thing or two about the struggle to stay positive when it comes to body confidence. The Swiss blogger has dealt with weight issues, eating disorders and even self-harm -- all of which she shares openly on her Instagram account.

“Since I can remember I've had some really bad issues with my belly. I wished it would be flat, not existing, not attracting attention to others. After a long period of dieting and excercising my belly got flatter but it still was here. I wasn't satisfied at all so I ate less and less every day. Then.. After months of bingeing (due to the months of starving) my belly got bigger.. well like it was before dieting. I hated it more than before. I pulled, punched and squeezed it everyday. I cried. Today I still squeeze it but with much love. I'm proud of my belly because he protects all of my organs. He's part of me, my body and my life. He's part of my story which started really bad but turned out good.”

Diaz hopes that by sharing these images and the attached messages, others will be inspired to love their own bodies -- no matter how they look.

In today’s cute stories, a dad recently took to Reddit to post this picture of his daughter dressed as Superman. 

“My daughter got to pick what she wore for her school pictures,” reads the caption. “Daddy approves.”

The image quickly caught the attention of other Reddit users, gathering more than 700 comments in the first 12 hours of being posted. 

“When she gets married you should Photoshop the husband’s face onto Superman,” said one commenter. 

“Your daughter and my son would be soulmates. His class picture is tomorrow and he has also chosen full Superman attire which is no different from his everyday outfit. She's very cute. Cheers!” commented another.

Along with the picture, Reddit user kjaj1213 shared that he and his wife recently learned that his daughter is 75 per cent deaf and how the whole family is currently in the process of learning American Sign Language. 

“She's learning so much faster than us though! I love how much her learning sign has opened up her expressiveness and vocabulary it's so heart warming to see her grow and become her self. We've started attending deaf groups and get togethers once a month and it's helping her confidence is signing tenfold.”

While wearing a costume may seem a little unconventional for a school photo, this dad “approves” and felt it was fitting due to the circumstances.

When it comes to vaccines, there are a lot of opinions out there. But one pediatrician wants to set the record straight when it comes to the popular “big pharma” theory. 

One of the reasons some parents have chosen to not vaccinate their children is because they believe that doctors are being paid by big pharmaceutical companies to push these “dangerous” drugs. Sure, there are other reasons why parents may choose not to vaccinate, but it was this theory in particular that really got to one pediatrician, who decided to speak out in a Facebook post. 

“I’m a pediatrician,” writes Mikey in a Facebook post shared by Refutations to Anti-Vaccine Memes. “[And] actually, we do get one,” he says in response to anti-vac parent Todd who suggest that doctors get a bonus for vaccinating. 

Mikey goes on to explain that yes, he is right, doctors do get kickback for vaccinating kids, but it’s not from the big pharmaceutical companies. 

“It comes from BIG INSURA,” he says. “The INSURANCE companies pay us a bonus for taking good care of our patients. For pediatricians like me, that means making sure that kids have all their vaccines by a certain age.”

He then explains how that bonus works and what vaccines are implicated.

But more importantly, he addresses his confusion as to why anyone would believe in the "big pharma" theory to begin with. 

“Now, why would an INSURANCE company want to pay me to give expensive vaccines (that they have to pay for, mind you) to a child if those vaccines were harmful? That would make no sense because the INSURANCE company would have to pay for the extra care that the child requires because of the ‘vaccine injuries.’”

“I am reducing their costs by making my patients less likely to need expensive hospital stays and so the insurance company shares some of those costs with us.”

For this pediatrician, it’s simply a matter of logic and ethics. 

“I didn’t bust my a-- through four years of university, four punishing years of medical school, and three dreadful years of residency (where we worked hours that made even the surgery residents cringe) giving up my entire 20s to work in the lowest-paying, hardest-working specialty in medicine just so I could hurt kids.”

While many commenters have applauded Mikey for speaking out, some are still skeptical.

If you follow Canadian reality star Jillian Harris, you’ll know that she was pregnant with her first child this summer. The interior designer and blogger has been sharing her personal experience since she first found out she was having a baby --and now we’ve got the birth story to go with it. 

Born on Aug. 5, Leo Pasutto’s arrival wasn’t exactly the picture perfect experience Harris had imagined. 

“For me, I feel like I envisioned a quiet night at home with just Justin and I … (and Nacho) just like in the movies, I would wake Justin up in the middle of the night with a gentle nudge ‘it’s time’ and off we would go down to the hospital. I feel like I would have ‘known’ it was coming and I would be totally prepared,” she says in a recent blog post outlining the day. 

Arriving two weeks prior to his due date, the couple was alerted that something was up when Harris started “leaking.”

“I got up one more time and just like the movies, my water broke. Like big time … SPLOOOSHHHH.”

She then goes on to explain the intensity of labour, how her entire film crew was present in the delivery room with her and how she almost had to have a C-section. 

“Just as they were going to take me into the OR, they checked my cervix and I was 10 CENTIMETRES!!!!!!!! WE COULD NOT BELIEVE it!!! I remember having NO energy to push but I knew it didn’t matter, we had to get the baby out!”

While most saw the announcement of Leo’s birth via Harris’ highly curated Instagram account, on her blog she shares more ‘real’ images from the delivery room and how things looked immediately postpartum -- namely, the mesh underwear. 

“Love the picture of you in the most horrendous, uncomfortable, mesh post baby underwear ( I know from experience),” said one of her Facebook followers. “How do you still look so beautiful? Love your posts, raw and real.”

“Love the first photo! I feel like those awful looking, Godsent underwear are the first badge of motherhood,” said another. 

“Oh my gosh, that picture of you in your mesh panties cracks me up!! Love it!!”

New mom Alexandra Shimo was at an event with her two-and-a-half month old baby, Jacob at the Lambton Golf and Country Club in Toronto’s west end when he began to fuss -- pretty normal for a baby that young. Assuming he was hungry, she sought out a discreet spot in the corner of the hallway and began nursing -- until staff alerted her that she was disturbing other patrons and asked if she could come down to the basement where she would be out of sight. 

“They sent Alex to the basement saying people didn't want to see her while they were eating,” said Lia Grimanis on Facebook in a post about the incident. “This is what they saw.”

In the accompanying image, Shimo can be seen fully clothed, holding her baby. 

In an interview with CTV News, Shimo discussed her surprise at the reaction. 

“I’d been happily feeding Jacob and a couple people came up and said how sweet he was and I thought that it was really quite idyllic. Then the restaurant manager came out and said a few people had complained because they ‘didn’t want to see this while they were eating,’ because we were in the sight of the restaurant.”

Embarrassed, Shimo followed the manager downstairs to the basement. 

“I was slightly embarrassed because he made me feel like it was a shameful thing by sort of covering me up and saying people didn’t want to see it.”

Shimo has been shocked by the response the Facebook post has received, both locally and internationally. 

“We had messages from people in Denmark, from the U.K., from the United States and all across Canada,” she said. “I think we’ve really tapped into that idea that we’re not going to go quietly into the basement anymore, this is our right to breastfeed.”

As well, the Lambton Golf and Country Club’s Facebook page has been flooded with one-star reviews shaming the facility for the incident. 

“Shame on you guys for forcing that nursing mother into the basement to breastfeed. I think you should be fined for this. We allow it in church and we don't say anything. I see this everywhere and it doesn't bother me. I think you owe restitution and an apology to this woman for this,” said one commenter. 

Another quoted the Ontario Human Rights Code.

“Under the Ontario Human Rights Code, it is illegal to discriminate against someone because of their sex, including pregnancy and breastfeeding. A website belonging to the Ontario Human Rights Commission indicates that no one can ask you to ‘cover up’ or require you move to a more 'discreet' area while breastfeeding.”

But some agreed with the facility’s decision to move Shimo, giving the facility a five-star rating. 

“All this crap about breastfeeding why not get a breast pump that's why they sell them!! Stop with all the human rights s--- we all have rights and some have the right not to have to see that! I have 2 kids and never felt the need to breastfeed in public!”

While the golf club still has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, Shimo is simply hoping for an apology. 

“This is 2016. We’re tired as women being made to feel ashamed of our bodies,” she said. “This is a natural and beautiful thing and it’s also a human right.”

Even if you don’t have kids, there’s nothing worse than hearing that a young person is sick. Be it cancer, MS, cystic fibrosis or simply struggling to get a start after being born a little too early, ill children  have a way of making us want to fight for them. And that’s precisely what the latest campaign video from SickKids Foundation is all about.

Entitled SickKids VS, the video is set to “Undeniable” by Donnie Daydream and takes kids literally onto the battle field, into the ring and through some of the toughest fights against some of the greatest challenges in children’s health.  

The video aims to not only show the strength and agility of the staff, but also of the patients. The message: “Sick is not weak.”

“The evolution is to a lot of empowerment. This notion that we are winning, but we won’t stop fighting until every kid is a healthy kid,” Lori Davison, vice-president of brand strategy and communications tells the Toronto Star.

While past campaigns from the foundation have featured heartbreaking images set to tunes like Coldplay’s “Fix You,” this video is coming at things from a different angle.

“We definitely see the heart-wrenching moments, but we also see some really great moments where we’re successful and we get it done,” kidney specialist and associate chief of research, Dr. Rulan Parekh says.

Last year, SickKids Foundation raised $137.3 million from donor support that they invested into child health research, learning and care.

When I was a kid there was nothing I wanted more than to be able to fly. I would constantly bug my dad to grab me by the hands and swing me around just so I could feel weightless. But now, some experts are suggesting that swinging kids around like this at a young age can actually lead to painful injuries.

“[Parents should] be aware that all their joints are still forming so anything that puts extra pressure on them can have a detrimental effect,” Adam Pandit, Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at Spire Thames Valley in Slough tells the Independent.

The condition is called “nursemaid’s” or “pulled” elbow and is most common with pre-school aged children between one and four. Joints and ligaments in the arms are still being developed at this age, making them vulnerable to pulling or jerking motions that can occur when they’re playing with a parent or guardian.

While the condition isn’t permanent, it can be quite painful, which has prompted experts to issue a warning to parents.

“In my experience I have seen very little incidences of direct injury to the shoulder and elbow joint as a result of children swinging by their hands holding onto adults. However it is obvious that parents or guardians need to exercise common sense and care when playing with children,” said orthopedic surgeon Amer Khan of Doctify.

Earlier this year, Jenny Halteman shared an incident with with Babble that landed her daughter in the emergency room, screaming that she couldn’t move her arm.

“Her floppy arm dangled at her side,” she says. “[The doctor explained] to us that she had something known as ‘nursemaid’s elbow,’ technically known as a radial head subluxation. Basically, when she was lifted up by the arm, it slightly dislocated at the elbow. It happens more easily in young children because their bones are still forming and their ligaments are loose.”

While the doctor was able to quickly relieve the pain in Halteman’s daughter’s arm, the incident was enough to scare Haltman from swinging her daughter around again.

“No way, kiddo.”

Now that we live in a world of elective C-sections, people have a lot to say about women who go the route of a caesarean birth. But one mom is speaking out after being told that her C-section means she didn’t really give birth to her daughter — and she’s sharing a pretty shocking image to show just how real it was.

“A new day and what seems to be another new post from someone insinuating that giving birth by cesarean means that you didn’t give birth. Can we please just stop?!” pleads Jodie Shaw in a Facebook post for Birth Without Fear.

The mom explains that while she didn’t choose to have a C-section, a fibroid and a low lying placenta made it necessary in order to safely deliver her daughter.

“I obviously can’t change people’s views but I’ve decided to post this picture to see if it may make people understand that despite what our birth plans might say. Sometimes we don’t get a choice. I didn’t get a choice. I had a fibroid the size of a melon sat on my cervix and a low lying placenta which meant that I’ve been left with no ordinary C-section scar. But whether you believe this or not. I gave birth to my baby.”

Accompanying her post is an image of her post-surgery belly, the rope-like incision dotted with painful-looking staples and stitches.

“This scar saved me from losing a life-threatening amount of blood and meant my baby was brought into this world as she should be. Healthy and unharmed, as was I.”

Shaw hopes that the image will make people think twice before judging a woman for having a caesarean.

“Think about the fact that given the choice they probably wouldn’t of chosen this but had no choice. Why would you choose a major operation and 6 weeks of recovery?”

Since the post went up on Oct. 9, hundreds of comments have flooded in in response to Shaw’s image.

“Birth- ‘the emergence of a baby or other young from the body of its mother; the start of life as a physically separate being.’ Doesn’t say via which mode of delivery! And doesn’t matter a mother has grown her baby for 9 months and goes through a lot to birth her baby vaginally or via a caesarean!” said Vicky Pugh.

“You absolutely gave birth. And even if you had elected to have the C section, you still would have given birth. Seriously!! You go mama! Thank you for putting this in the world….and helping mamas know that a baby coming into this world is birth…no matter the scars we carry for doing so! Cheers!” chimed in Erin Hannah Clark.

But some still vented their beef with women voluntarily opting for a caesarean.

“I don’t know anyone who would nit pick a necessary C-section like this one. It obviously was life-saving. They have their place. What I do wonder about are all the scheduled unnecessary ones being done. But whichever type, I’d never say that person didn’t give birth,” said Shannon Rice.

For most of her life, Haritha Khandabattu has felt controlled. First, by her parents growing up and then later by her in-laws and her husband. Humiliated but determined, she decided to get out.

“I ended up marrying a man that I barely knew and didn’t love,” Khandabattu shared in an Instagram post on Humans of Amsterdam.

“My in-laws were very controlling and I was forced to give my salary to them. They demanded I would contact my father and ask him for a dowry. My husband turned out just to be as controlling as his parents. He would check my phone regularly and accused me multiple times of cheating on him.”

“Every day the situation was getting worse.”

Khandabattu describes how she tried to work on the relationship for a year and a half, encouraging her husband to travel and witness other cultures, hoping to ignite some compassion in him. But her efforts were fruitless.

“One day, after a huge fight I could no longer take it. I talked to my manager at work and I asked him if I could get transferred to another country. He told me I could work in Amsterdam. I didn’t need to think about it and I accepted his offer.”

“When I arrived at the Amsterdam airport it felt as if I could finally breath again.”

Being in Amsterdam exposed Khandabattu to other women who had overcome major struggles and made her realize  that her life could be so much more. In that moment, she decided to divorce her husband and move to Amsterdam permanently. But doing that would be no easy feat.

''When my father found out I wanted to divorce my husband he was really upset. He suggested I would travel to India so we could talk things through. I wasn’t planning on changing my mind but in order to get my divorce settled I would have to go to India. My manager at Nike gave me two weeks off and I flew back home. When I arrived, my family was mostly emotional and angry with me for making the decision to get a divorce. Later that week we traveled to the other side of the country to my husband’s house to discuss the situation. I remember sitting in a circle in his living room and everyone was looking at me. For hours my family and his family were trying to convince me to not go through with the divorce. This went on for hours and hours and at some point I was so exhausted I had to go to sleep. That night I slept in his house. Just being there reminded me of all those terrible months. I woke up the next day and I noticed that my bag with my passport, phone and credit cards was missing. I panicked and confronted my in-laws. They said that they had nothing to do with my missing bag and that someone must have broken in and stole it. Slowly I started to realize how serious the situation was. My two weeks off were almost finished and I had to get to my job in Amsterdam. To get a new passport in India it takes at least 3 months and a signature of your father or husband. I have never felt so hopeless in my entire life but I wasn’t about to give up. I emailed my boss and I told him I was in a serious emergency and that I needed 2 more weeks to fix it, luckily he agreed. The image of my life back in Amsterdam was what kept me going. Returning to India she quickly realized that making this life change wouldn’t be as easy as she had hoped. Now that she was getting a divorce, she need to get a new passport, which in India required the signature of either a father or husband.

Through a series of schemes, lies and luck, Khandabattu managed to get a new passport and with a little more luck, a residency card for the Netherlands.

“If I had been honest I would have never gotten it,” she says.

When the airplane took off I could finally breath again. When I landed in Amsterdam I took the train from the airport to my house. I didn’t cry, I couldn’t believe all that had really happened. I felt as if I finally had woken up from a bad dream. I had been gone for 45 days in total. The next day I found out that I had lost my job at Nike. I could have hired a lawyer and fight it but I needed peace. They didn’t know what I had gone through so couldn’t be mad at them. I said goodbye to my colleagues and I now had 3 months left to find a new job. I wasn’t scared or sad, I had never felt so strong in my entire life. After all I had been through I knew I could handle any kind of situation. I took a deep breath and I started to apply for jobs. It took me 17 days to find work. All of this happened in the beginning of this year. Unfortunately, I am still not divorced but I’m never going back to India. I do talk to my parents but I find it really hard to trust them. I work as a software engineer at a highly reputed company and I’m happy. Amsterdam is magical, this is where I want to be. This is my home and my friends are my family.'' Khandabattu eventually made it back to Amsterdam ready to start her new life.

“When I landed in Amsterdam I took the train from the airport to my house. I didn’t cry, I couldn’t believe all that had really happened. I felt as if I finally had woken up from a bad dream. I had been gone for 45 days in total.”

While Khandabattu still isn’t officially divorced and conversations with her parents are strained, she doesn’t regret her actions.

“Amsterdam is magical, this is where I want to be. This is my home and my friends are my family.”

As a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, the “Harry Potter” star was in town last month to help raise awareness about gender equality and the challenges faced by women and girls around the world.

“Meeting with young girls, who like many in their country are struggling with poverty and were pressured into early marriage, depriving them of their education in the process, made me realize how important it is for women to be able to make their own choices,” she said during a recent trip to Malawi.

“It’s so encouraging to see how such a harmful practice can be stopped when communities work together to pass laws and turn those laws into reality.”

The star shared the images and details of her time in Canada to help celebrate International Day of the Girl, which was on Tuesday, as well as Grégoire Trudeau joining Facebook.

“Bonjour! I’m looking forward to being able to see your adventures and especially witness the work you do on behalf of women and girls.”

For the past 18 years, Australian mother of three Caitlin Brassington has worked as a pediatric and child health nurse. She has had a full career that’s included holding patients hands as they’ve taken their last breath, bringing babies into the world, performing CPR and, well, saving lives. But when she was referred to as “just a nurse” by an acquaintance earlier this week, it was the final straw.

“Over my 18 year career I have heard this phrase many, many times, but today it got to me. Am I just a nurse?” she asked in an open letter written on Instagram that was cross-posted to Facebook.

'Just a Nurse'. I am just home from a busy shift, looking very ordinary in my scrubs. On the way home today I stopped at the shop for milk and saw an acquaintance. She has never seen me in uniform and said that she didn't realise I was 'just a nurse'. Wow! Over my 18 year career I have heard this phrase many, many time, but today it got to me. Am I just a nurse? I have helped babies into the world, many of whom needed assistance to take their first breath, and yet I am just a nurse. I have held patients hands and ensured their dignity while they take their last breath, and yet I am just a nurse. I have counselled grieving parents after the loss of a child, and yet I am just a nurse. I have performed CPR on patients and brought them back to life, and yet I am just a nurse. I am the medical officers eyes, ears and hands with the ability to assess, treat and manage your illness, and yet I am just a nurse. I can ascultate every lung field on a newborn and assess which field may have a decreased air entry, and yet I am just a nurse. I can educate patients, carers, and junior nurses, and yet I am just a nurse. I am my patients advocate in a health system that does not always put my patients best interest first, and yet I am just a nurse. I will miss Christmas Days, my children's birthdays, and school musicals to come to work to care for your loved one, and yet I am just a nurse. I can take blood, cannulate and suture a wound, and yet I am just a nurse. I can manage a cardiac arrest in a newborn, a child or an adult, and yet I am just a nurse. I can tell you the dosage of adrenaline or amiodarone based on weight that your child may need to bring them back to life, and yet I am just a nurse. I have the experience and knowledge that has saved people's lives. In the post, she lists the many reasons why calling someone “just” a nurse really isn’t fair.

“I have helped babies into the world, many of whom needed assistance to take their first breath, and yet I am just a nurse. I have held patients hands and ensured their dignity while they take their last breath, and yet I am just a nurse. I have counselled grieving parents after the loss of a child, and yet I am just a nurse. I have performed CPR on patients and brought them back to life, and yet I am just a nurse.”

She outlines the many aspects of her job, both big and small as well as the sacrifices — like missing Christmas Day with her family — that come with “just” being a nurse.

“I will miss Christmas Days, my children’s birthdays, and school musicals to come to work to care for your loved one, and yet I am just a nurse.”

In an interview with ABC News 24 in Australia, Brassington discussed the post, blaming history for the way society undervalues roles like being a nurse, a teacher, a parent and so on.

“I don’t think any profession should have the word ‘just’ in front of it,” she said. “Many of my friends in the past have called themselves just a stay-at-home mom and I think that role is enormous.”

Immediately after putting up the post, Brassington wondered if she had been a little too hasty with her remarks but now she’s happy that she did and says that the response has been overwhelming.

“The support, appreciation, recognition and love for nurses has been, and continues to be, truly humbling,” she told ABC News. “We are not a profession that very often stands up and says: ‘Look at me — tell me what a good job I am doing.’ And I think, because of this, we rarely actually hear what the greater community sees in us.”

“So many of the comments have touched me.”
